Too bad, for all they offer in terms of convenience and user experience they still can’t match the quality/standards of consumer grade digital audio from over 40 years ago. Let alone surpass them
How many wireless ear buds were there 40 years ago? Sucks I missed out on them cuz I didn’t know about them.

I would argue that any small bud-style headphone, wired or wireless, typically last a year or less. It’s not like Apple’s previous wired headphones lasted for years - certainly not if you were using them daily. I went through so many pairs of them, they were effectively required to be included in the box, as you always needed another pair for the inevitable torn cord. I skipped the original AirPods, mainly because I have large ears and they would fall out with even minimal movement. I’m on my second pair of AirPod Pro’s (1st gen) and though the battery life isn’t great after a year of use, they still perform perfectly two years later.
Your apple headphones last you less than a year? Get them replaced under warranty. Secondly how is it possible that you have had numerous issues of headphones not lasting over a year. I still have the headphones that came with my iPod touch and my iPhone 4s. I bought EarPods when I got my iPhone X and even those still work. They’ve even been in the wash and dry cycle multiple times. Take of ur sh** dude.

One of the worst 'design' decisions for the environment, and something on principle I will never adopt. No headphone jack = no buy for me, and for a committed Apple enthusiast my whole life, it looks like I've have to hold onto an iPhone SE 1st gen or 6S forever.
You’re still using a iPhone 6? You’re def. Not the target demographic apple wants anyway.

Being on the road, flying and on and off trains every week, just the daily unwinding and winding of the headphone cord exacted a heavy toll on the cord. Plus the cord almost always got caught on the shoulder strap of my bag which then yanked the buds out of my ears, which was just more strain on the cord.

I didn’t say I didn’t get replacements a few times under warranty, but that doesn’t address the fact that they still failed. I got my first set of AirPod Pros replaced under warranty too and that was the only quality issue I’ve had with them.

I’ve also owned countless other wired and Bluetooth headsets over the past 40+ years, so I’ve got a bit of history and experience, but please tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about…

And Happy Holidays to you!

They are convenient, but terrible for the environment. I wish Apple would make the batteries more easily replaceable instead of essentially having to buy a new pair. They become almost useless after over two years. I almost don’t want to buy a new pair, but I probably will anyway.

Anyone want to guess what Apple thought back then as to what percent of owners would lose one or more ear pieces in the first year of ownership? Whatever it was, I bet reality is 5x more than what Apple predicted.

Two neat things that came from Airpods:

1. Tons of e-waste
2. A foolproof method of detecting when someone you're talking to isn't really paying attention to you

Can you beat this guy? 😛

Fantastic user experience, average sound quality, disappointing battery.
I would completely disagree on the last 2. Sound quality may be average only for audiophiles. every day user will have a really hard time to distinguish them from the wired one. Battery life is just excellent in my opinion. Sure, they do not last a month and I never find myself having them on my ears for 5 hours or close to that. I charge the case once a week and do listen to an hour or 2 non stop frequently during days. They never die on me. Just brilliant.

Consumer grade digital audio from 1982... Consumers weren't listening to digital audio in 1982.

Being old enough to have been into audio during the 1980s, I can tell you the quality and standards of "consumer" grade back then was absolutely far, far, far below today. Thats not to say that high end equipment didn't exist. But consumer grade was nothing like it is today.

you do realize that the about decade and a half of iPod/iTunes dominance was all lossy?
From its launch in 2003 up and even until today, you can only buy up to 256 KBPSAAC files on iTunes

The earbuds weren’t lossy though, they could be plugged into any source. There were ways of loading up the iPod with lossless files as well.

Is that right?

So let me get this straight. That either means, the fact that CDs came out in 1982 is PsyOps and never actually happened? Or CD players were actually analog? Or the boxes all were wrapped with a little bow that said “do not play until 1983?”
Please elaborate

AirPods - The user experience was brilliant! The sound quality wasn't great! No bass!
AirPods Pro - Great user experience, spacial audio is brilliant, still no bass!
PowerBeats Pro - Great user experience, massive case, no spacial audio, bass!

Still baffled to this day how they can release one product which is designed to fit different types of ears around the world - no customisation - no tips - nothing. The design flaws were shiny plastic (no texture) and ear wax always adheres to shiny surfaces. I was also not a fan of the long "stems" which made these look like short chop sticks painted white, and their audio "quality" was average to say the least.

Completely agree that AirPods were revolutionary. Everyone looked at me thinking I was mad spending that sort of money on headphones but never got how they just worked, and worked every time, no long pressing awkward buttons and beeps / annoying voices telling me the next song came on, when things work, you forget about them and they become part of you.

Six years later they still look wired. Apple needs to find a way to avoid those sticks coming out of people's ears.

Definitely a psyOp! ;-)

It'll never cease to amaze me just how connected to information we are today and yet how stunningly lazy folks can be to take the 4 seconds it requires to fact-check the simplest things.

This was a game changing device, along with the push to get rid of the 3.5mm jack, which the rest of the industry criticized then quickly followed suit. And it happened under Tim Cook, for those that say he hasn't really done anything with the company since he took over.
