Has it occurred to anyone that there isn't any need to continue "development" of them? They are fine the way they are...if my current Airports still work 15 years from now, I'll still be using them as is.
They may benfit from the odd security update, every now and then. When I brought mine the lack of security problems was a major selling point.

No you don't, please check my posts, # 343 and 346

Seriously? I remember freaking about when the new express's were out and asking at 123 Mac Mini if you really could not fully configure the router from a windows machine.
To be fair the wording on Apples own site was very misleading/confusing.
I guess the point maybe moot now anyway.
Big thanks for pointing this out to me however!!!

Quite a shame, I always hoped that one day, when I'll be rich, I'll use an Apple router. I guess not, then.

Maybe the reason is that since every internet connection nowadays comes with a free modem/router from the ISP, the vast majority of people have no need for a different router. Mostly only tech savvy people will think about swapping out their router, the majority of whom use Windows, and the average person won't be able to set one up (need to know how to switch the ISP's router into bridge mode, enter IP addresses and passwords into your browser, find your login details that you never had to enter because your router came pre-logged in, etc...). It's not difficult but it's not something most people know how to do. The result is that almost no one buys them.

Apple ranks highest in customer satisfaction among wireless router manufacturers, according to a new study released by J.D. Power today.

The accolade comes just nine days after a report said Apple has ceased development of its AirPort routers and reassigned engineers working on the products to other teams. Apple continues to sell the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule, last released in 2013, but future updates appear unlikely.

Apple beat out all other wireless router vendors with a score of 876, based on a 1,000-point scale, followed by ASUS at 860, D-Link at 856, and TP-Link at 854. Apple was the only company to receive a 5-star Power Circle consumer rating, which places it "among the best" according to J.D. Power.

The report, based on responses from 3,037 consumers, measured overall satisfaction across 10 factors, listed in order of importance: Wi-Fi range; reliability; speed of upload/download; restore connection easily; security capabilities; price; ease of use; variety of features; intuitive user interface; and customer service.

Seeing this report all I can say is Apple are you crazy !!!

One more question - where is Draytek ???

I love my 3TB Time Capsule ☺️

You are more than welcome.
I think what happens is folks just believe what they read on the Apple website, and who can blame them? Problem is, they don't have the actual experience of working with the windows side so they post absolutes based on what they read, not from experience.

Forestall brought us the wonderful iOS 6 design that probably would have never gone away if he had stayed with Apple.

And those that remained at Apple brought us this flat design that has largely remained unchanged over the years.

Everything on iOS looks so stale and dated now. Prime example is the Weather app, cringe every time I open it. All I see it Yahoo design, circa 2012.

This news is freaking hilarious.

It is so in concert with everything Apple has done lately.

Why should I buy ANYTHING from Apple??

They kill good products dead with zero warning.

If it ain't disposable in 2-3 years, Apple is not going to manufacture it anymore.

So, upcoming:

-iMacs with soldered RAM and SSDs, only USB3/TB3 ports
-Mac Minis with soldered RAM and SSDs, only USB3/TB3 ports
-Mac Pro shot in the head ("the iMac is powerful enough")

Getting better performance out of my new Amplifi router than I ever did with my Time Capsule. It's more Apple, than Apple's offerings. Just look at it!

I like how their website pictures it sexily laying around the house like that, without showing the stupid cable/DSL/fiber modem that it requires for Internet access (and all of the cables/cords that go along with connecting it to that).

Today's Apple doesn't have that "thing" Apple had back then. It lacks enthusiasm. They don't have the same excitement they had, and you can see it in their products and in their decisions. The new Apple is clearly quantity over quality. This is something very disappointing for me and for many others who can see it as well, I believe.

I still have faith in Apple, though. It can still be what it used to be. But they have to find that enthusiasm they had. They have to change their current thinking of "how to sell more and be better" to what it used to be; to what made Apple what it was. It used to be their damn slogan as well, yet they have totally forgotten about it.

Think Different, Apple. Just Think Different.

Apple made decent inkjet printers at one point too.

1) Everyone got out of inkjet printers
2) Difference is Apple still has an advantage with their routers for Mac users - ease of use and compatibility with certain features that other routers don't offer (Time Machine, airplay).

Ubiquiti Networks are the best on the market priced in the same range, and considered prosumer. If Apple is going to push or recommend another company from here, my money is on them.

Maybe they can take their $100B+ in case and buy them, to ensure compatability. Probably offers more value than Beats.

:D

Well, you cold just run 2 cat-6 cables plus the power cord off your coffee table and under the rug to the corner where you have your cable modem set up . . .

Without mesh points that are wired this isn't a very attractive alternative.

They're NOT getting out of the router business. They disbanded the team because there is little to improve upon the current standard. How much difference was there between the First "N" class airport and the final one that came in 2012. High Speed internet for home is no where near the bandwidth "AC" is currently at.

when 802.11 AX finally gets its spec, then Apple Will reassemble the team

Obviously they are discontinuing development on this because it has reached minimum thinness levels already.

On a side note, just picked up a Google Onhub

I was using my Airport Extreme that I bought in 2007 until a year ago when I switched to Comcast. I got a four port wireless router from them and haven't used the Airport Extreme since then.

My Airport Extreme was so sold that it could not get me the 80Mbps wirelessly that I get over WiFi on the Comcast router. I had to use a cable to any of my Macs to get the maximum speeds which I was fine doing all those years. Even before I had Comcast, I couldn't get the full speeds over WiFi when I had CenturyLink.

Glad I moved on over a year ago. I don't miss my AEBS.

After re-reading the original Bloomberg report, it only states that Apple disbanded the division that develops router. They extrapolated from that action that it mus be exiting the business. But it's very possible that router development will continue in a different division and that the action is just internal restructuring.

Since the Apple TV and routers are both central to the home hub, it would make sense to bring their development teams together.

Don't give a crap. I have an AC - and windows Airport utility. and it works.

I think there is some skew to these rumors.

While it's been 3 years since we've seen a new Time Capsule/Airport Extreme, wireless technology hasn't really created a need for new hardware just yet. Think about it - these are 3 years old yet still taking the gold medal from an accolades perspective.

In addition, has Apple confirmed all development has ceased? They rarely comment on anything, but this doesn't deny nor confirm facts.

I think we'll see Time Capsule's and Time Machine go away in favor of iCloud backups. And then I think the Airport Extreme technology of a wireless router will be embedded into an Apple "home device hub". This device will act as the Apple TV5, acting as the Apple TV and Wireless Router.

Later on we'll see other "home" devices that rely on this new "home device hub", similar to Amazon Echo Dots.

This is just my speculation, based on Apple moving away from HW storage and more to the cloud, and being rumored to build a "killer home device."

I agree with you in almost everything except the possibility of an Apple TV acting as a wireless router. The aTVs are paired with the TVs, and I'd say most won't have a ethernet connection by the TV. Maybe as an extender, but you will need to find a router elsewhere in the future.

I think all the bloggers have overlooked the biggest reason Apple is getting out of the router biz: most every ISP in the country now, or will soon include router and wi-fi capabilities built-in as part of their modem hardware.

Hard to compete with "free"...

Well in my case, I turned off TWC's wireless. I have 3 AirPort Extremes to saturate my house and backyard with wonderful wireless.
