I’d guess 99% of Apple customers have never even heard of the AirPower.

Your guesstimate might be accurate if it wasn’t for the small fact that they publically announced it at their keynote, which was then shared by almost every news organisation on the planet.

Apple really needs to design a charging solution that keeps devices upright, or in the least the iPhone upright, so you can have it on your desk or bedside table and be able to just look at the iPhone to unlock it and view notifications. The other benefit is that a more vertical oriented charger takes up less table top space.

I'd buy it only if it was < $100 but I find it very unlikely

Not knowing much about it? Apple's own pre-planned and rehearsed announcement (plus a year of advertisement on their website) explained every feature it's supposed to have, why it's better than other mats, what it would look like, and when it would be released.

Don't now turn this round and say any failure to meet expectations is the fans' fault.

Oh god, I’m happy using my £20 Amazon rip off. I’m ok with the extra effort of having to position my watch and phone precisely on the charger if it saves me £200+

They should make the base of the iMac Airpower - that would solve so many problems in one go.

This is especially useful if Apple introduces a Magic Mouse with wireless charging, because the current charging method is as goofy, if not more goofy, than that of the 1st gen Apple Pencil.
