Apple used to be expensive but it was often at least somewhat justified if you looked closer to the value. While Macs and iPhones may be associated with a luxury lifestyle, they are more than just status symbols because they do have arguably useful primary functions. But the association with luxury crap like this is just silly. It started with the zero-port MacBook, the gold iPhones and the gold Apple Watch. There's a difference between "expensive because it's high tech" and "expensive because it's a status symbol and there's absolutely no relationship between price and functionality or quality".

I'd say just leave luxury fashion crap to luxury fashion crap companies, and leave tech to tech companies.

Hermes stuff reminds me of when the AppStore came out and some developer wrote the "I am Rich" app that cost 1000. It was just an app with a picture of a jewel. No real value besides the name of the app and that you got it. LOL

For those wondering who the target demographic was for this item. It was very likely directed at the Chinese market as well as the Chinese diaspora in the West who very commonly purchase items like this for its cultural significance as a display of status amongst their community. This broadly applies to the designer-apparel market in general.

What appears to defy all logic as a sensible purchase to most of us is actually a ‘sensible’ and even admirable purchase to those in other cultures. It wouldn’t surprise me if the items sold out and Hermes are unable to keep up with demand based on the aforementioned reasoning.

As reported by 9to5Mac, AirTag Hermès is currently unavailable for purchase from Apple or directly from the Hermès website. The reasoning behind the unavailability remains unknown.

Apple's AirTags Hermès line features three separate styles, an AirTag with a Hermès keyring, bag charm, and luggage tag. All styles feature the standard AirTag with a removable backplate but engraved with "Hermès Apple AirTag." Each style of AirTag holder is made with high-quality leather and starts at $299 and goes up to $449 for the luggage tag.

The term “more money than sense” comes to mind.

I appreciate it a lot MacRumours is not speculating widely about the reason. All Hermès AirTags are sold out for weeks already, and this happens to selected watch bands as well regularly. Two thoughts later you might find several reasons for, which are not related to the headlines everywhere else based on one unfortunate case, which, I agree, shouldn't have happened.

And yes, Hermès is expensive and these are definitely luxury items not made for everybody. We got it, and should move on.

$299 for a bag charm?

Jules Well, we'd have to be talkin' about one charming (ahem) pig bag charm. I mean, it would have to be ten times more charming than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I'm saying

High end luxury brands usually make limited quantities of their products. It's not uncommon for these brands to have a waiting list on people wanting to buy their bags. The limited quantity amplifies the feel of exclusivity of the brand and product.

Indeed.

The wife went into a 'boutique' in London, England, to look at the 'bags'. She found a purse. I was almost left in a panic over the price. She said 'relax', and asked the salesdroid about availability. 'We have a waiting list. Currently, you are looking at delivery in 3 to 4 months'. That freaked me out too. THAT many people wanted one? (I thought it was hideous, but...) She laughed. 'Either they only made 10 of them, or thousands are ordering them, but yeah, you have to wait for expensive things!' Really? What's the point. By the time that 'bag' is available, the next seasons bag will be out. 'Ahh, that's the price for trying to look 'rich'. The really rich have the latest of everything, and pay for that too'. So, you don't want one, do you? 'No'. I relaxed. Then it was 'shoe shopping'! Oh joy... Jimmy Choo shoes. She found a pair that looked pretty darned awesome on her feet. I liked them. How much?:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops: For SHOES??? Seriously??? 'But they ARE Sexy, right'? Not THAT sexy...

But people righteously buy Crocs, and tut on people wearing leather shoes. But at least a leather shoe is largely biodegradable over time, and Crocs will last until the Sun swells and swallows the Earth. I'd rather wear leather shoes than some toxic petrochemical wasteland that is not recyclable, and won't ever decompose. Priorities...

Priorities indeed. I think the animals care less about an uninhabitable distant future than their impending inescapable doom we're about to bestow upon them. At the very least, I care more about their well being within my lifetime than environmental mismanagement and the illusion than shoes last 10 years.

It’s not unreasonable to think that some people thought this would make a nice Mother’s Day gift. I got my mom two airtags with the leather keychain and leather loop, but I wasn’t crazy enough to spend Hermès prices lol
I would never give my mother luggage tags for Mother’s Day.

Nothing screams, "This Item is Being Tracked." More than a flashy leather holder. The first thing any crook will do when steeling an item with this attached is remove it and slip it into someone else's pocket or leave it in their Uber sending the owner of the expensive holder and purse...luggage...briefcase...etc. On a wild goose chase.

Some people have much more money than brains.
That would be a concern with an anti-theft device. unfortunately the view seems to be AirTags are not for anti-theft or tracking when stolen. Apple has set these up to make it super easy for thieves to identify its presence and defeat it to ensure they are not used for stalking, etc.

This is Hermès. Their Berkin bags can cost over $100,000.

$299 for a bag charm? It’s actually one of their cheapest bag charms. Most of their bag charms cost $700 and don’t include an airtag.
