Some product categories that it was normal not to use a case, Apple completely flipped them and it's making it normal to use one:

Watch
Remote
Phone
Watch and remote, I’ll give you that. But cases have been completely normal since the very first cell phones. Don’t you remember how popular the different colored cases for Razrs were?! Mall kiosks full of hundreds of styles of cases for every imaginable model of flip phone were common back in like 2002. Come on now.

I think the holder is a downside of the design. Airtags are product meant to be attached to some item, without any mechanism for doing the attaching.
The lack of loop hole seems like a huge security issue because of how easily it is to pop the AirTag out of the holder.

Its just a shame because it’s designed so small and discrete yet the lack of a hole requires a large attention grabbing case where someone could very easily remove it. A simple hole would allow use of a steel security loop, key ring or to simply sew it into the lining of a bag.

(For me, I’d prefer a key ring but since I can’t then I’m just going to duct tape it to my AirPods case)

It really isn't designed to be an anti-theft device. Airtags are designed to help you find "lost" items. This is a very different usecase from stolen items. In fact a "large attention grabbing case" is just what you want to help people return your keys or other lost items to you.

If I wanted some higher level of anti-tamper security, I suppose I could weld it to my item with some sort of epoxy.

You are right phone might be a more debatable one. But the typical Nokia back in the day was indestructible and there wasn't much a case market if any for those. Razrs the ones I remember it wasn't that common using a case. As late as 2009 with the Palm Pre, it was a phone designed without a case in mind.

Oh well. If people are worried, there are already some clear and faux carbon fiber "skins" available on Amazon (I saw them today). If there's a need, someone will fill it.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. You are correct, the long ping times and easily removable battery makes this a terrible “anti-theft” device. But my point about “large attention grabbing case” was more about how it pretty much puts a giant advertisement that “Hey, bag full of Apple products here!!!”.

I owned a Palm Pre and used a case. Also used one with my Centro before that. I didn’t have a Razr but every single one of my friends with one had a case. I think they were much more common than you realize.

Why does it say that? That makes no sense unless you are a woman with a purse. I have an new iPhone a new Apple Watch and AirTags - if they steal my bag they would have to steal my pants and cut off my arm to get anything of value. I just like my bag and I’m a tech nerd! I do have a Mac but never carry it around. Not everyone carries macs and iPads wherever they go!

In my own family no one used a case with the razr. With iPhone we all use a case now. I guess we can keep citing anecdotes all day, but I think we both agree Apple leads the way in making product categories that explode the case industry.

In the case of Airtags, I'd argue it's yet another category Apple adds to its line, where it's unnecesary and unfortunate to make a tag that's supposed to be worn all the time, to make it so fragile so that it scratches easily and looks bad.

Typical Apple, pioneering a new product category that caters to the $50 billion case industry.

Is there any Apple product that doesn't require a case?

I'm not sure why you see this as a negative. It helps the industry make money. A while back people accused Apple of making too many built-in good quality apps on the Mac which put developers who want to make similar apps for the Mac at a disadvantage. I think it's good that Apple makes products that the accessory industry can take great advantage of because it gives the consumer more choices.

For the record, no Apple product REQUIRES a case. Not even the Airtag as it's not just created to be put on a keychain.

Okay, not trying to argue. We used to share an office building with a TSA training center so I’m just going by what I’ve been told and they say that bag thieves look for certain indicators when targeting luggage at carousels or terminals. Big Apple stickers, power bricks in outside pockets and stuff like tile trackers outside of the bag indicate value. Apologies for the assumption but I’m just building on the idea that most people dont spend $60 ($30tag/$30 case) for a bag with no valuables inside.

I think at this time anybody who notices the Airtag hanging off someone's key ring or bag (that they would have to be extremely closeup to even notice or care) will only see it as a fun Apple trinket. Heck many people here on MR still don't quite understand Airtags and admittedly I never knew what they were until the Apple keynote. I think it's safe to understand that thieves are of least concern.

TBH given apple sells the nice leather Keyrings for these with open front and back, I’m a little shocked the steel front scratches so easily, If they’re own accessories are designed to show both sides off I’d have expected a little more sturdiness!

When I got mine slipped it right into the genuine Apple key ring and the popper on the key ring scratched the front of the AirTag, I know these are cheap but thats a bit ridiculous, if you don’t baby the product the genuine accessory will damage it out the box!!!

I fully expected this and TBH its one of the many Apple products I’ve bought over the last several years that scratches easily but it doesn’t bother me in the least.

The title of this thread could be an article on The Onion.

As others have said, it's basically the same material as the back panels on the old iPods and they scratched just by being breathed on.

I still remember how Jobs, in an interview, said that the chrome on iPods aged "beautifully." I always thought the scratches looked terrible vOv
