Some mobile things I’ll spend money protecting. Like iPhone iPad MacBook Air which ironically never left the house. These Air Tags. Nah I’ll just use whatever key ring holder and that’s it. Won’t mind at all when it gets scratched up. For me It’s a cool little tech convenience item that doesn’t need cosmetic protection.

I would think anything that is capable of stopping scratches would also lower the volume. I'd rather have volume.

Found a third-party one that has that, though this has no reviews:

I really like this design. To be clear, I don't care one iota about scratches. But the guy who mentioned the airtag falling appart in his pocket has me worried that somehow my dog's airtag could come apart due to some odd way she lies down on it or something. I like the fully enclosed design.

The problem isnt that it scratches. The problem is the messaging behind designing an accessory with accessories that are intended to showcase the product… and it scratches.

Look at it this way. IF this was designed to be a purely utilitarian device then it would be a plain slab with a hole in it to maximize use scenarios. But it isn’t. This was designed as art. Exposed etched logo, engraving options and elegant external cases that proudly display the product. So if vanity is a reason to showcase the logo then it is a legitimate complaint for someone to buy a $40 case that shows off a scratched bottlecap.

(BTW. I just tossed mine in a bag and it will probably run out of battery before I think about it again so I dont care about scratches. I’m just saying that this is yet another instance in which this product contradicts itself)

You could use the same argument for pretty much any Apple device ...... none of them come with a case

…but no other Apple device REQUIRES a case.

I’m not arguing because I really dont care enough to. I’m just saying that its kinda funny to sell a case that actively damages the product it is trying to show off.

Anyway, when I think of the AirTag keychain then I think of those tacky BMW keychains someone impulse buys when getting an oil change. These eventually scratch too but it takes but they do have a coating that keeps it looking pretty clean for years while the AirTag gets its first scratch when you put it in the case.

(And seriously, how much more practical does a keychain hole make it. I’ll take a million scratches if I could just get it on my keys with minimum bulk)

strictly speaking an airtag doesn’t require a case, I’m using 2 without a case. Agree if you want to use it for keys or luggage you do. Everyone’s use is different so for apple to supply cases this would be difficult.

Lol a $29 AirTag is “designed as art”.
It looks better than the black plastic tile but nowhere near “art”. Do you think your typical whiteboard magnets as art? They look the same.

Lotta people might need to lower their expectations regarding scratch resistance to something that's going to be attached to keys and placed in their pocket.

Apple makes a ton on the backend with their accessories. I told my wife to just use one of those several 🙄 empty felt Tiffany pouches to safeguard her tag in her purse. Works great.
