Don't have a holder yet but pretty sure I would just face the stainless side in and the white plastic out. Anyone know if that would fit properly?
There is a whole punched right through, it doesn't matter which way round you put the tag, the stainless steel will always be uncovered.

While the scratches bug me because it feels like a "form over function" decision (ie, textures applied to the surfaces could make them look new longer), I can live with the eventual rattiness. I'm actually more concerned with how long the case back will stay tight. I suppose they'll last a few years before the assembly degrades... but I feel like that's their major weak point.

Yeah, at this point I'm expecting it to be like the back of my old iPod. Will it scratch? Yes. Will it still work exactly how it's supposed to? Yes.

Bottom line, if you leave it uncovered it will scratch, can't believe anyone would have thought it wouldn't.

Yea shame on us for thinking Apple would for once make a non-scratchable product.

Especially one that’s supposed to be worn and exposed to heavy wear and tear.

Shame!

I have OCD and I hated the fingerprints and scratches on it. So I made a silver foil vinyl wrap that mimics the original back, and a front space gray metallic vinyl wrap to match the other Apple stuff I own.

Typical Apple, pioneering a new product category that caters to the $50 billion case industry.

Is there any Apple product that doesn't require a case?

Some product categories that it was normal not to use a case, Apple completely flipped them and it's making it normal to use one:

Watch
Remote
Phone
I don’t use a case for any of those, though I know some people do, except… Watch?! I haven’t even heard of cases for Apple Watch!

How about also protect the case with another case. You know, meta case.

I know of two close friends that used cases for their Apple watch, and another friend that was regretting not using a case and his watch getting an unexpected scratch.

A quick search on Amazon shows at least 2000 apple watch cases.

When I saw my friends using cases I thought it was so sad that the Apple world has come down to this, Apple lures people with sexy shiny objects, so it works great as marketing, but those same users as they try to protect the shiny objects, end up ruining the aesthetics.

I can 'accept' some product categories requiring cases, but I drew the line at the watch, I thought it was ridiculous ruining the aesthetics of a product that's supposed to be a 'fashion' product.

It's like using a case for jewelry, kinda ridiculous right?

I'm sure if Apple made a necklace tomorrow, it'd need a case too 🤣

Mine scratched going INTO the keychain holder. I apparently bumped it on the snap.

Honestly, it seems kinda silly that they made the keychain holder open on both sides. And that they made the airtag look all status-y when they know it's just going to get banged up, without giving any way to prevent it from getting banged up. Everything about it seems like half-baked design. I'm sure we'll get a more robust "version 2" just like with every other new design they make. Until then, at least I'll be able to find my keys.

It’s a tracker not an iPhone and unfortunately it scratches easily
I’ve seen keychains on the web that conceal the airbag
Unfortunately Apple didn’t buff the stainless steel to give it a Matt finish

I have ordered a sheet of leather which I am going to cut 2 teardrop pieces out of. Stitch them together pop the Airtag in and finish it off with a press stud and an eyelet for my key ring. Then it’s just a basic leather fob. All the kit I need costs less than one Apple leather Airtag holder. That includes the press studs, hole punch, thread hole punch, eyelets, leather, skiver tool, thread, needles etc. I should be able to get a dozen out of the leather, so maybe I should setup an Etsy shop 🤣

Wow. Just wow. It's not just the aesthetics either, it's the bulk. Apple Watches are thick enough already!

I would argue though that it's not a case of Apple making a product that needs a case. It doesn't *need* a case, I've never put mine in one and it still looks perfect (other than fingerprints). Same for my phones, and the remote definitely doesn't need a case (what it needs is a U1 chip - FFS Apple).

Is that just a silver (color) vinyl? Or does it actually contain metal. Reason I ask, is that I imagine putting a metallic film over the plastic big might attenuate the signal.

Apple products are soo nice aesthetically and I wouldn't want mine to scratch either. In search for nice protection, can't wait for mine to arrive in the mail.

I’m not sure if it contains any actual metal, but I compared the performance with one that doesn’t have the film, and they both pick up signal at the same distances.

Do you have a source for the vinyl material?
For the back, I used this:

And for the space gray front and the Apple logo on the back, I used this:
