I ordered one this morning, engraved. Estimated delivery is May 17-24. I also ordered the Belkin loop, coming May 3-5. I want to try one out for awhile before ordering any others.

Been covered in many other threads. But basically because of the "security features" it can't be used well as a tracking device. There are many valid use cases for a device like that. Hopefully over time Apple will adapt a bit to provide some sort of happy medium to improve its usefulness.
Once you report the tag as lost it is locked to the Apple ID it belongs to. There’s no way to disable it like you would if it was secretly planted on you.

Hi. Could you post the thread? I'm curious about this.

Add another error: it says too early come back at 5....when I click on my email order # confirmation 😄
Indeed. Like in the post by Leadingheat ?

1. There isn't room for a hole.
2. Apple wants to encourage development of a third-party Airtag ecosystem.
It would be quite strange if Apple wouldn't know how to create an aluminium casing with a very small protruding part with a hole! I mean their laptop casings have more complex designs. 😅 I guess you can call the leather bands an ecosystem, to me it sounds more like a highly aggressive profit strategy.

I think that the ability to attach the product to bags etc. without add-on items is at least as big difference between Tile and Airtags than the U1 chip.

I agree that they ought to have a hole. Maybe in the next version, or when (if) they roll out other AirTags, like the different Tiles.

My order was quoted as shipping between the 17th and the 24th, engraved.

EDIT: The key fobs will be here between the 3rd and 5th.

Airtags shipped via 'standard delivery', and the fobs via 'express delivery'. Why express the fobs, and lag the tags themselves? Makes no sense...

Apple's new AirTag item tracker became available to pre-order today at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, and shipping estimates are already beginning to slip from Friday, April 30 launch day delivery into the first week of May or later.

In the United States, for example, a single AirTag is now estimated for delivery on May 3-5, but the four-pack option is still available for delivery on April 30 as of writing. AirTag accessories are also estimated for delivery in May, while the AirTag Hermès keychain and luggage tag are estimated for delivery in June.

Engraving an AirTag with letters or emoji also results in extended shipping estimates, so take that into consideration when ordering.

Priced at $29 each or $99 for a four pack, users can attach an AirTag to things like a wallet, keys, purse, or backpack and then keep track of the item's location in the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. AirTags‌ are similar to Tile trackers, but they have a U1 chip for Ultra Wideband that enables improved location accuracy when tracking items with iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 models. (Tile is reportedly working on its own Ultra Wideband tracker.)

Pre-orders also began today for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini in a new purple color. Many configurations remain available for April 30 delivery.

Thank you to all the May beta testers. I look forward to hearing about its positives and negatives before buying one myself.

Ordered thru app on phone when store opened. I engraved on a 4-pack, April 30 delivery. Took until 8:05AM EST to check out. I found no way to add 2nd 4-pack with engraving, so I did a 2nd order. I'm guessing 10-12 minutes in, and it slipped until May 10-12 estimated delivery.

I didn’t even realize this was up for order today. I thought everything was available to order next Friday. Oh well.

I wish Apple could implement something like a "Stolen Mode" but after reading yesterday's interview where they suggest buying an Apple Watch as a solution I don't have any hope now.
You do realise that any stalker could just put the tracker they placed in somebody else's stuff as stolen and could thus track those people without them being notified? But you'd prefer a product that can be used for stalking because you care more about being able to track stolen items than others being able to stalk people easily?

That’s why Apple has built a number of powerful anti-stalking protections into the AirTag platform. If you’re an iPhone owner running iOS 14.5 or later and someone slips an AirTag into your possession in secret in order to track your movements, your iPhone will warn you this has happened by sending you an “AirTag Found Moving With You” notification. This notification will appear only when an AirTag is following you that is not paired with your Apple ID or another iPhone that is in your vicinity. That distinction is critical so that your iPhone won’t be notified of AirTags that, for instance, belong to other people on the same bus you’re riding. The notification will appear courtesy of the Find My app when the user arrives home–as defined by the address in their contacts “Me” card or if using significant locations. Tapping the notification will take you to the Find My app, where you can tell the AirTag that has been slipped into your possession to emit a sound so you can locate it.

But what about people who don’t own an iPhone? How would Android owners—or those without a smartphone at all—know if an AirTag was slipped into their possession by a stalker?

Apple thought of that too. After an AirTag has been away from its paired device for a certain amount of time, the AirTag will automatically emit a sound notifying those around it of its presence. Right now, the AirTag needs to be out of range of its paired device for three days for the sound to emit, but Apple could lengthen or shorten this time via a software update in the future.

For God's sakes. Just hide it on the device you want to track. It is not complicated
The problem is when your item is stolen. If the tag is away from the paired phone for X amount of minutes/hours, but finds itself near another, singular, iPhone for X amount of time then it beeps loudly. Thief says "WTF is that sound?", finds the tag and tosses it away.

Apple says this feature is to prevent a tag from being used to stalk someone. Such as putting it in a person's purse or car and then being able to follow them. That's all good but it also defeats the purpose of tracking a stolen device.

Another step further to make humanity more dumb. Seriously, aren’t you able to remember where you left important things???

I had one of these in my cart + the Belkin keyring case, but I have never lost my keys. So it would effectively be a very expensive keyring. I think I'll pass. And I would never put one of these on a dog collar in the off chance they ingest it.
