Apple seems extremely afraid of security concerns, which may well be warranted. However, I can tell it's going to be annoying for me. Apparently, once you "tag" something you own, you can no longer let anyone else use it without jumping through hoops.
There are NO hoops. The other person gets the alert which they can dismiss. Also, there is going to be family sharing.

I see there are expensive and designer holders for these tags being made for luggage and other objects, but I don't see what I would think would be a money maker for Air Tags - PET COLLARS. There are many pet owners that would buy them. If you made a tracker login program to go with them, I would get them just to see where my cat went when he roams during the day.
It doesn't have GPS, the tracking isn't that accurate.

That is a useful idea but may not work long term if you travel. Unless you take your pet with you on trips. A few days away and every time they get up to move it might beep based on the info provided. Maybe think of it as something you add when you get to the dog park and remove once you're home. I like the idea generally.

I just went on the Apple Store to look at the selection of emoji you can engrave on the AirTag, and it is kind of meh... it’s obviously not a big deal, but if I decide to get some, I would’ve liked to put an image that corresponds to what I want to track... so the fact that there isn’t a key emoji, something travel related (plane, earth,...), a couple different types of bags (backpack, purse, etc), or other types of items one would like to track is a bit disappointing.

The sound only happens when the owner puts it in LOST mode.
I thought the sound would start if the tag was with someone. But looks like the person just disables or or says play sound so they can find the device that is “stalking” them

Sooo... even though they're saying these are NOT meant for tracking people.... I don't see any reason why I couldn't use these to track my kids at amusement parks and such. Am I missing something (they're too young to even have their own phones)?

No, they only receive an alert on their phone.

I also would like to share some of my Airtags with my family. My Wife and I share the car keys and we are constantly upset with one another as we both leave the keys in all sorts of places.

From what I understand, if I was the owner of the tag only I can find the keys??? My wife cannot on her phone....this is such a shame as it would be most useful.. I can find her phone if she leaves it somewhere, and she mine... but not an Airtag ??

Also I would want both my wife and I to be able to update the position of the 'shared' Airtag. So if she say left the keys somewhere, her phone would have updated the last know location. This is also a feature I fear is not present currently...

Perhaps this is all coming in IOS 15... they are locking it down initially so we , the public get comfortable with the platform as it is and then they slowly open it up a little ? one can only hope...

A.
Seems like it would be simpler to just have a second set of keys.

What if I have an air tag paired to say an extra set of keys and my personal phone.

The extra set of keys stays at home unless needed. But my wife is also home while I am at work.

Technically the keys won’t move (or “follow her” around the house) but because they are home, and I am not, will it try to notify her she is being tracked?

Legit not trying to track my wife in my own home… rather trying not to p!$$ her off with “another annoying tech item” I bought lol

Yes, I think you could since some are saying they can be used on dog collars which of course dogs don't have iPhones. In your case, and amusement park would be perfect because they would be around an entire mesh of iPhones users who can anonymously can help you track them.

You could just set your remote on an end table or the table usually in front of everyone’s couch. It’s not hard to not lose a remote.
You clearly don't have children. Our remote gets lost nearly daily. Now by "lost" that just means stuck in a cushion or thrown in the toy box or taken to another room. But being able to pinpoint that location instead of searching everywhere every time would be huge for my household. The first AirTag I buy is going on our living room TV remote.

You can.

It’s great for tracking kids on fair or festival AFAIS.

Still can’t believe the new AppleTV remote doesn’t have one built in. That video with the guy crawling into the couch was a perfect opportunity to have a little dig at themselves by focusing in on one of the current style remotes hiding in the couch. Opportunity lost.

My guess is, now that Siri Remote is it's own product (which you can buy by itself) I wonder if they'll come out with "Siri Remote+" which will include the U1 chip.
Aluminium casing likely causes issues.

The sharing thing seems like a bit of a mistake. You can't have use AirTags for a whole family to be able to track a shared set of keys or a bike or luggage. It looks like only one person can actually track an item. With the improvements made with Family Sharing made in recent years, it does seem a bit short sighted not to allow family tracking of AirTags.

yeah this is a bit of a deal breaker for me... use cases I really want...

1) airtags that belong to the entire family aren't a thing. If you are driving the car with the airtag'd keys I wouldn't want it to alert for privacy because it belongs to me but my wife or teens are driving it instead and I'm not there.

2) airbags that belong to minor but can be tracked by parents. I'm ok making a wallet/backpack airtag assigned to one of my kid's apple IDs but I should be able to track it.

I want to love this product and I'm not saying tile or others are any better but the size and use cases for me are limiting. I might pick up a few to see if they fit my life but I'm not sure.

I can't believe that people have had chance to ask Apple questions on this and nobody has yet asked how long a tag needs to be near someone before they get privacy alerts.

On other threads the guesses range from a few minutes to weeks. :)

https://www.macrumors.com/2021/04/21/airtags-play-sound-after-three-days/ I realize this only specifies how long before it plays a sound, but I would imagine it also applies to notifications. No confirmation of that though.
