yeah this is a bit of a deal breaker for me... use cases I really want...

1) airtags that belong to the entire family aren't a thing. If you are driving the car with the airtag'd keys I wouldn't want it to alert for privacy because it belongs to me but my wife or teens are driving it instead and I'm not there.

2) airbags that belong to minor but can be tracked by parents. I'm ok making a wallet/backpack airtag assigned to one of my kid's apple IDs but I should be able to track it.

I want to love this product and I'm not saying tile or others are any better but the size and use cases for me are limiting. I might pick up a few to see if they fit my life but I'm not sure.
This is only software version 1.

I can't believe that people have had chance to ask Apple questions on this and nobody has yet asked how long a tag needs to be near someone before they get privacy alerts.

On other threads the guesses range from a few minutes to weeks. :)
It’s almost like Apple intentionally keep this information obscure.

What if I have an air tag paired to say an extra set of keys and my personal phone.

The extra set of keys stays at home unless needed. But my wife is also home while I am at work.

Technically the keys won’t move (or “follow her” around the house) but because they are home, and I am not, will it try to notify her she is being tracked?

Legit not trying to track my wife in my own home… rather trying not to p!$$ her off with “another annoying tech item” I bought lol
No, because the keys with the tag not *moving around* the house with her. If she picks them up and say goes for a walk, then yes.

"Most customers will want to track their keys, wallets, and backpack, not needing more than four."

Since Tile started allowing replaceable batteries, I've probably got 10 or so (keys, briefcase, couple of drones, couple of cameras, wallet, and stick-on ones for remotes (because I have little kids who like to stick them in random places around the house). Granted, in most of those cases it's to track if they got stolen rather than because I am worried about losing them, but I could see someone with a lot of stuff they want to track wanting more than 16.

The sharing thing seems like a bit of a mistake. You can't have use AirTags for a whole family to be able to track a shared set of keys or a bike or luggage. It looks like only one person can actually track an item. With the improvements made with Family Sharing made in recent years, it does seem a bit short sighted not to allow family tracking of AirTags.
I can see all the devices of my family members using family sharing, and had assumed these would be included in that.

Have we had confirmation that they don't?

It's hard to keep up with what we know because of all the various threads on these.

Cue the "massive failure" posts. Also, posts that end in "hard pass."
Just because you think AirTags are a necessary item doesn’t mean everyone else should. I’ve been around more than 6 decades now and I’ve never lost my keys, glasses, wallet, remotes, phone, or anything of much value. So I personally see no reason to pay $29 for an AirTag to track each little item I own, or any item I own. Many companies are building in trackers to their remotes and other devices. Apple should have done that. As far as tracking an item outside of your home, these are not that good for such a task. Thieves will quickly learn to use a smartphone to find AirTags, then they will deactivate them and toss them away. They will fail as an anti-theft or theft recovery device. They are basically and primarily for tracking things inside your home. If they were priced at $5 or less, they might be a good option. At $29 they are a major pass for me. I fully understand others will want them, but they are not for me.

Sorry, I haven't been following all of the AirTag threads. But, one thing I don't currently understand is how they deal with anti-stalking situations vs legitimate theft situations. If someone steals your keys or something, is this going to notify them that they're being tracked? And does that defeat the purpose?
sure until the person see's the big ass tracker and ditches it and not your keys.

I thought the sound only went to the iPhone... someone said the device won’t beep unless the owner has it make noise.

It’s all conflicting IMO.
It’s both. iPhone users are notified, but the tags themselves also make a sound. So that people without iPhones will still know they’re potentially being tracked.

If they have an iPhone it will alert them that there’s a tracker following them. They will then either A) abandon the suitcase or B) rummage through it to find and disable the tracker. However if they’re already rummaging through your suitcase, they’re most likely going to take what’s valuable and leave the rest behind anyway.

Or the third possibility is that they don’t know/care what an AirTag is and carry on.

Again, it’s a lost-item-finder, not an anti-theft tool, so yes thieves with iPhones will eventually be alerted to the presence of AirTags.
but can't they also disable it via their phone?

Not everyone who finds one of your bags/etc will throw the airtag away and steal the product... some people... actually most even... aren't thieves. ;p

I might get some. Put one under/in my electric bike (old one but still). Not like a thief instantly knows its there or it instantly starts making noise either.

Some crafty Amazon 3rd party seller might invent some sort of pouch you can sew into a bag with the tag in it, so the thief can't discard it so readily. Of course, the thief doesn't really want your bag, they want the contents so not that great still, but it just might give you enough time to track.
i'm hoping for something like that. and searching for attractive holders for these tags — don't really care for the ones apple presented.

of course, but i guess we're trying to figure out all of the instances where these tags will be of use.

I can already track every device associated with any family member (ipads, iphones, etc.) so I wonder if it will enable at least one “head of the household” (keeper of the master appleid) to track everything?

This product has probably been ready to go for at least a year
Problem was that Apple was figuring out how to protect the consumer from all the bad things it could be used for
it’s a good product with many caveats
After all this time hopefully Apple has the kinks worked out

There are few Apple products that strike me as completely useless, but now I've seen one in AirTags. I keep my few keys in my pocket and so don't want a large keychain. Plus, who loses keys?! Maybe for a luggage tag, but I'm in no hurry to hop on a plane anymore, between a pandemic and climate change. I was thinking I could tag each of my bikes, but now I learn that any iPhone-toting thief would be alerted that they were in possession of a tagged bike. So they're pretty much useless for me because I'm not sufficiently careless with my belongings.

Keys have far more potential to get lost because they are in a move in all places you go! TV Remote? Misplaced -yes, lost - NO.
And yet Dish Network has had remote finder for nearly 2 decades. Have had to use it many times.
Boo boo boop, bee bee beep, bah bah bop!

No they aren't. Read up first.

Yes, need to understand this better. If I buy a 4-pack and they are registered under my Apple ID but I give one to my wife to put in her purse how does that work? Can I do family share and she and I can find her purse?
maybe this helps explain why we haven’t seen airTag built into the AppleTV remote. perhaps they know they have a gap in their tracking ability by not having family sharing. We would all want anyone in the family to track something like a remote.
