Yah, it sounds so convenient to charge them one by one on the Apple Watch charger

How often are you expecting to charge these things?!

If it’s anything more often than around a month, I’m not sure they’ll be worth the hassle

That would mare them a little bigger than i’d like. I’m willing to use a different charger if they are small enough.
If they were curved the same as the AW charger, but smaller in diameter, then you could still use the AW charger AND have smaller tags. Plus I like the idea of them being magnetic as there’s less chance of dropping/losing one while charging.

I don't know the expected range of the tag itself but I would guess it to be in the 30' to 100' range. The key is that it is expected to use ANY iPhone (or possibly even iPad or Apple Watch) within that range to locate your AirTag. That means if someone were to steal my bike, I could locate it anytime it was within 30-100' of anyone with an iPhone.

The existing Tile product works in a similar manner but 1) you can only locate a Tile if it is within range of someone who has the Tile app running on their portable device and 2) I do not like Tile's privacy standards - once you install the app they have the ability to track your mobile device anywhere. I trust Apple with my real time location and I know my wireless service provider has that information (nothing I can do about that) but I don't want to give access to that information to a 3rd party like Tile.

Sounds great for finding a stolen bike, but what's to prevent a stalker from hiding an air tile on someones car? Or drop it in their purse? The police could as well. No need for costly gps systems with batteries that need to be replaced after a couple weeks. Just wait for someone with an iPhone to walk by.

I believe the success of these will relate to the price. Make these 3/$50. You’ll sell millions upon millions. Make them $50. Not so much.

tske HomePod. $349. Way over priced. Don’t sell too well
At $199. They sell out at most stores.

Apple is a service company now. These items should be sold as inexpensive as possible. Sell as many as possible. Draw people into the EcoSystem. Then they use them services.

yea, if that's the case, they can shove these tags. of course if they don't pull them out soon enough - they may not be able to recover them once the battery drains...

Yeah, I meant that as a joke towards almost all of their other products. The CR2032's in our Tiles don't quite last a year, but unless there is some unique or new feature I don't see us switching.

Ideally they should support Qi wireless charging, and hopefully not another magnetic charger.

I disagree. Magnetic charging is better. I can't count the number of times I've woken up to my phone not fully charged because I missed the wireless charging placement by 1 mm.

well, the real advantage would be the size of the ios community vs. the tile community. when i learned about tiles years ago, i almost got them until i realized that if i were to, say, leave my wallet in a cab – i would be at the mercy of other tile owners, which just didn't seem enough. now if we expand that to ios devices – that's a horse of a different color!

I get that counter-point against Tile, however, in real-world usage we have only needed them within our own home or cars to locate items that have fallen out of pockets (keys, wallets). Our use-case may not be anything like others use-cases. I started using Tile's after my better half had a string of leaving things behind (everything recovered thankfully); and then after I Tile'd us up we didn't misplace anything for not quite a year. Luckily the batteries were still good.

What's the expected range? Don't Tiles work over only a few feet? Seems like at that range locating your bike should be easy.

It's going to work the same way other "Find My" devices works now. It uses the bluetooth of any strangers nearby with an Apple product.

I would have thought for a product like this wireless charging at a distance would be feasible. It would only need it be a tiny tiny trickle.

because I have to say I find Qi chargers are less than the promise, and I might as well plug the iPhone in.

right around the time i learned about tiles, i had two instances of dropping my keys(once in the street and once in a store) 'cause i had this pair of pants with unfortunate pockets) but i assumed that tiles had gps capability, which they obvs do not... so doing all this, using ios users as checkpoints, seems a little more exciting. not that i really need these, but hey)

Not a problem with Qi-certified stand-type chargers.

Depending on how they work and how you purchase them, I’m definitely getting at least one. I tend to not misplace things to often, but I’m thinking they’d be great for leaving in the car, especially when you park in a massive car park and can’t remember where you parked.

you can do that already with maps on iPhone ;)

Annoyingly, it only works if you have Siri Hands-Free or Carplay (the latter of which only if you bothered to plug it in).

actually no, it works over bluetooth to.

if they use the same charger as Apple Watch, they should make it a power bank... then you would just need to grab the charger and stick it to the tag for an hour or two. ie no need to remove the tag from whatever you put it on, your bike or scooter or whatever.

Whatever the charger is, it needs to be mobile and able to go into tight spaces. I'm just thinking someone who put a tag on, say, a bike. They're obviously not going to want to bring that inside to charge on an Apple Watch charger. But then again I guess it depends on how these things would attach.

No it doesn't. Apple only whitelists approved car Bluetooth devices, which, as I said, are compatible with Siri Hands-Free.
My car isn't on a special white list nor do I have hands free connected and I use the find my car feature all the time. All you have to have is a Bluetooth connection with your radio. The same connection that allows you to play Apple Music or Spotify over your car speakers.

If you’re having trouble setting it up go over all the settings because if you don’t have the correct settings it won’t work.

Nope. I have multiple car bluetooth standalone and have older cars with integrated Bluetooth and they've never worked. There's an Apple whitelist. None of what you said disproves this.

On the other hand, new setups with Siri Eyes Free and Carplay always work, so it's not a settings issue.

Qi or at least the exact same charger as Apple Watch would be good. I also hope they don’t bundle a charger, will need multiple tags and not multiple chargers.

If there is a custom charger they would likely sell it with and without the charger.

I didn’t realize these would be rechargeable at all (maybe I missed that in a previous report). That seems like a game changer vs Tile.

I must be the only one wondering why they require charging. The Tile on my wife's car keys is still going strong over 2 years later. For $25 or less, I'm perfectly happy disposing of it when it dies and buying the current tech.
