As I understand the rumours this is going to do exactly what Tile does, only better. No similar device that does what this does *as well as this does*, but certainly similar devices exist.

The primary advantage apple will have is that the network will be much bigger than tile, assuming that all iphones and ios devices transparently receive and forward air tag Location data in the background.

Hopefully the software underlying the Airtag is available for developers to use as well, since Congress is already having anti-trust hearings with competitors over this unreleased Apple product. If Apple tries to keep access away from developers (like the Apple Pay NFC chip), expect more headlines regarding Airtag competitors and anti-trust.

I know Samsung *have* designers, but do they only aks them to work on a product once Apple have released a competing one?
If you read the article, they have been working on their "Tile" device for a while now.
Given Apple hasn't released one yet, I'd say they are ahead on this one.

Read my Updated post, does Tile use other iPhones as a relay to find the item!
You have no idea how big this is, they will sell a ton of them and then some, especially if they also open this to Android devices, although I doubt they will do this.

I would like to track my girlfriend secretly.

If I put that thing in her sushi platter, what are the chances of her swallowing it without biting on it? How small is it anyway?

Eh, it's sorta noticeable; might wanna stick with trusting her.

This could open the door for lots of other uses, for example sharing a car, you leave one in a Tesla, share the Airtag (Location) with one of your family members or friends, he/she/they locate it, share the Tesla Key and of he/she/they go.

Pretty sure Apple is never going to release this, as it's going to be a massive privacy violation.

Stalkers could put these trackers in people's cars and they would never know (assuming reports of it being anonymous are true)
And I’m sure Apple has thought about that.
I’m pretty sure that they will have a feature where if an airtag that doesn’t belong to you or one of your family members is basically in constant presence, always following you, you will be notified as such.
Also, it’s not like you can’t do this already. Turn on iMessage location sharing while someones not looking, use Find My, and there’s GPS tracking apps that do the exact same thing.
Creepy people will be creepy people

It is. But companies like Tile presumably won’t use it because of the privacy restrictions.

They have already done this.
Keep up

Who the hell is Prosser? That video is just awful.

“Apple have my face and fingerprint”

No, they really don’t... your thinking of Google.
LOL! You know, we've read hundreds of "rumors" by this guy but this is the first video I've ever seen of him and gosh it's bad. I much prefer the text version of him for a variety of reasons. But honestly... like many have noticed... this is just bleh from him.

Software leaks have already shown that you may be able to detect and disable trackers which are following you, even if they don’t belong to you. I don’t know how Apple would balance that concern with the danger of thieves disabling the trackers on stolen devices, but I’m going to assume they’ve thought about it longer then the few seconds it takes to type a forum post.

"Similar to Tile, AirTags will help users keep track of their personal belongings, such as their keys, wallets, and backpacks"

Not similar to Tile, Apple drama pundits and bashers will be gnashing their teeth about privacy and generating FUD.

That's the thing.. it loses the advantage over Tile if you have to actively participate in each AirTags.

The entire point of AirTags is to make it passively useful.

Yes, that's my assumption too. So doing what Tile does, but better (thanks partly to the larger network, and hopefully due to better integration with the OS and better geofencing).

Yeah, and it's unbelievably ugly, as though no designer has worked on it (just engineers). If Apple already had one available I bet Samsung's would be a heckovalot nicer looking.

Yes it does, but only if they have the Tile app installed. If Apple build it into the OS (and make it opt-out) then we should end up with a far better product. This is why I haven't replaced my Tiles, although it's been so long now I probably should have!
