Yes it does, but only if they have the Tile app installed. If Apple build it into the OS (and make it opt-out) then we should end up with a far better product. This is why I haven't replaced my Tiles, although it's been so long now I probably should have!
That's what I said.
But it seems Apple will open it's Find My network to Tile amongst others.

Jon clearly hasn't looked outside in a while—there's plenty of people out and about. Maybe that's why we're still in this.

For those who say Tile does the same, it really doesn't, other smartphones need the Tile App installed to be used to track your lost Item, iOS will have it built into each and every iPhone.
It's not even announced as a product but let's say your speculation is correct. That would be the reason to use the Airtag over Tile since the chances of finding your lost tag would be exponentially increased. As for the crowdsourcing tracking, perhaps there might be some additional location services permission.

I would like to track my girlfriend secretly.

If I put that thing in her sushi platter, what are the chances of her swallowing it without biting on it? How small is it anyway?
You would probably have to put one in her sushi platter every day. Does she eat a sushi platter everyday? Well, maybe only every other day if she gets constipated?

Has it been rolled out yet, the page you linked to says end of the (2020) year.
Tile wasn't/"is not the same" until this has been rolled out.

""=I realize Airtags aren't released yet.
Yes, it was rolled out with 14.3. However, I don’t know if any third-party manufacturers have started using it yet

As annoying as Prosser is, he usually has the first dig at a rumor

I do notice he doesn't cover Mac rumors at all. Excuse the pun.

Asteroid I think is what the codename was, I didn’t become active in the forums until 2002 but I remember all that stuff. Like the original elevator Apple product shots.

Edit: I can’t type

How are we taking Jon Prosser seriously?? Why is he still front page news? I always knew he had a spotty track record, but I never actually heard him speak. Watching 2 minutes of that video I was visibly cringing on how unprofessional and uneducated he actually is. (Apple already has my fingerprint, and my face? No. It does not. It’s stored on-device, encrypted on the Secure Enclave. Do a quick Google search jonny boy.)

side note, that video of the airtags if legit looks like they may ACTUALLY be user replaceable batteries. It’s thick enough to put a watch battery in it looks like! One can only hope. Curious how we’re gonna attach these to anything though, there’s no loop holes. Time will tell.

Working for Facebook/Oculus, Apple has a lot of catching up to do. The sales of the Oculus 2 are massive. I was selling like 20 a day at the store I was supporting. I have not had units to sell in three and a half weeks! And VR software sales are up 400 percent over last 2 months. Competition is good and makes it better for all consumers. But the Oculus Quest 2 is my first VR headset and it is crazy good!

Read my Updated post, does Tile use other iPhones as a relay to find the item!
You have no idea how big this is, they will sell a ton of them and then some, especially if they also open this to Android devices, although I doubt they will do this.
I have no doubt these could be big sellers but I do see two possible unintended consequences:

1. As previous users mentioned (in jest) they could be covertly used as tracking devices by stalkers or suspicious significant others. If Apple makes it easy to track location via a wider range and at lower cost it could become more tempting for people to do it because of the ease of implementing it.

2. This could also cause more disstisfaction with law enforcement (esp. in the United States) where it is under seige by constant reporting of malfeasance by the mainstream media. I have reported multiple cases of theft that involves filling out a police report that goes nowhere. In the case of an iPhone of a family member, I was able to determine the exact location of the phone (via Find My) and reported it to the local authorities and was essentially told to fill out a report and not to expect anything. I would imagine this would be a common scenario for most people.

At this point, I could only think of a couple of things I might use the AirTags for: keys, car & backpack or passport during travel. In all of these instances it would be for finding the lost item as opposed to recovering it if it was stolen.

That video & this post title are misleading. I thought it was an official animation for the AirTags. This is not ‘showing off’ anything, this is a render.

Whilst Prosser is fake news, here is a better AirTags leak. AirTags are coming and they will be:

1. Water resistant
2. Neoprene coated with MagSafe

That new render looks exactly the same as the one Jon showed months ago. Not really polished in Apple style at all.

I’m not watching that persons YouTube video just to see the possible animation. He deserves no money for that.

Prosser is a buffoon. His accuracy rating is laughable and when called on his mistakes frequently offers more excuses than my five year old. I wish people would stop using this clown as a source.
