So is this meant to help find my keys or remote lost under the sofa cushion or help me track down my backpack if I left it in a taxi or subway? Both? Or just column A? How does B work if there isn't intetnetz?

2021 is expected to be the year that Apple finally releases its long-awaited AirTags item trackers, and ahead of time, YouTuber and leaker Jon Prosser has shared a 3D animation of the accessory that was allegedly created by Apple.

Prosser says he obtained the animation from a software engineer, who believes that it may be presented to users in a future iOS version. Apple shows a similar 3D animation for several other accessories during the pairing process on an iPhone or iPad, including various HomePod and AirPods models and more.

As seen in previous mockups, AirTags are expected to be small, circular tags with a polished silver metal disc on the rear.

Similar to Tile, AirTags will help users keep track of their personal belongings, such as their keys, wallets, and backpacks, with users receiving a push notification on their Apple devices when they are separated from a tagged item. In 2019, MacRumors obtained screenshots showing that AirTags will be managed through a new Items tab in the Find My app.

AirTags are expected to support Ultra Wideband for improved location accuracy, as well as Bluetooth LE for broader compatibility with devices. AirTags are also expected to offer augmented reality functionality for locating misplaced items.

Thanks to Apple accidentally referencing AirTags in a YouTube video last April, we know this accessory is the real deal, but an exact release date still remains up in the air. Apple typically holds its first event of a year in March, but with in-person events not being hosted any time soon, a virtual event or press release is possible at any time.

I am thinking that shiny surface IS the battery - Apple Branded of course - what an idea to save space - so Apple can sell the batteries actually to anyone needing a (standard?) size battery besides just for AirTag users - and even better if it can be wirelessly charged. That's a more important thing than just an airtag - other than the mesh network capability of course. If it's a standard size battery, it could even power a Tile, or my digital calipers, or our burglar alarm...

You’re out your keys and whatever exhorbitany price the tags cost .

What is the benefit of this product? I don't get it
A couple of use cases:

Attach one to your keys or other small item that you may mislay. Then, rather than having to search for them if they go missing you can just look on your phone for their location.

When travelling put one in your case, so if it goes missing at any point you can see where it is.

The second of these is the reason I am interested in this. On two occasions I have been waiting by luggage collection at airports whilst my bag is in a different city. This would have saved the time spent waiting for it to not arrive. On other occasions it would have given us reassurance that the bag is actually on its way when it is delayed. Also potentially means you don’t have to wait right by the reclaim and can wait until your phone tells you it is close by and then just grab it.

Again with the AirTags..
Exactly my thought, every, single, time these are mentioned as 'news' on this site. lol.
AirTags are the iWalk of 2021.

for those newbies - https://www.macrumors.com/2001/10/22/spy-photos-iwalk/

Nice video! This I think was a dead end, especially so soon after the Newton death, PDA's were already more than PDA's in 2001 - having cameras, external storage (Palm m505/515, Sony Clie's just about every model they had).

At least the Navigator came to life in the form of iPad/iPad Pro ;)

AirTags will be released as soon as Apple found them.

LMAO! Let's hope Apple fans that want this product can find their sanity first ;)

That's Prosser for you. He's one of the kings of clickbaiting, second perhaps only to BelluarGaming
he’s nowhere near as bad as everything Apple pro.
video title: iOS 14.4 beta 2: this changes everything.
introduction: what’s up guys, everything Apple pro here, and today we’re gonna be looking at one of the biggest updates in iOS history.
actual update: they change the AirPlay Icon in control center. Can you believe that? A new icon. This changes everything

Your second use case scenario is something obvious I didn't even think about. I have experienced delayed and "lost" luggage on multiple flights and it has caused me a significant amount of frustration trying to get info on when and if I would ever get it back. That scenario alone would be enough for me to buy the AirTags if they become a reality.

I wonder if it will charge via Qi or Apple will finally find another use for the Watch charger pad...

Interesting. Your luggage example is great and quiet useful.
