This is something I suggested (via Apple feedback) a while ago. Apple should do something like „MessageKit“ that allows chat apps to hook into the native Messages app, e.g. invoke an app view as part of the Messages app), to have one unified place for messages with proper native treatment (e.g. free Announce with Siri or shortcut automation support for incoming messages).

This is one of the times I look forward to Apple lowering the boom on Beeper.
Why? You have to have Apple hardware to make this work, and seriously...how many people are actually going to want to do this? Hardly a threat to Apple's gigantic bankroll. I don't hear anyone complaining about Hackintosh development and use -- I would think that would be much more of a financial threat than some person who already owns a Mac or an iPhone and wants iMessges on that device. Who cares? This is a kludge solution at best.

Gah. I used to use hangouts with a Google number. It was so handy. Could chat with friends savvy enough to use their Google chat. Could SMS chat with die-hards who insist only only texting from PBX phone numbers. Could put on a headset to take/make calls with old people who still insist on using vocal noises to communicate. Ran on any browser or any phone or tablet.

Now it's split up between services. iMessage is not usable for me, because it is mixed with my PBX phone number which is just a torrent of text spam every day.

This might not be any good, but maybe it nudges Apple to implement iMessage on android. In any case, anyone who can provide a solid solution to the multi-platform messaging problem will be golden.

That was such a great and beautiful app in the early days of osx.

So this app would have access to all my messages? And my credentials for those services? Hard pass.

Better solution> narrow your communication tools to 2-3 apps (preferably privacy . I have iMessage, Signal and SMS. People who won't use these can always send an email. Having 12 messaging apps is not manageable, even with a unifying app (and I was using Trillian back in the day).

"an always-online Mac running the Beeper app is needed to use as a bridge. Alternately, Beeper will ship a "Jailbroken iPhone with the Beeper app installed which bridges to iMessage" to users unable to use a Mac."

Indeed, an elegant workaround.

Plan B was you just give them your iCloud credentials, and a team of contractors will manually transcribe your incoming and outgoing messages.

I think the part where they will send you a jailbroken iPhone to use the app might cause them the most legal trouble from Apple. I can't see this lasting too long.

I really wish the Pebble guy could get involved with a successful start-up. I really liked the Pebble Time, I still have one in a drawer somewhere.

It's the time that Apple will open iMessage... at least with a web interface....
Mr. Cook, pays that damn licenses to make it real.
