There's no such thing as a pro motion display. It's just a 120hz display pro motion is just a marketing term.

These displays will be designed by and built by Samsung

LTPO is an Apple-developed technology (for which it holds the patents,) Samsung has also been working on similar display technology that won’t require it to pay royalties to one of its main rivals. Samsung’s version is known as hybrid-oxide and polycrystalline silicon (HOP.)

the more you know

I find it interesting how specs like the 120Hz refresh rate screens is a huge issue when someone puts it out there that they’re coming, yet living with the iPhone 12’s generates zero complaints from everyday consumers (myself included). I’ve had and have been using an iPad Pro 12.9” since 2019, so I know what it’s like to have a variable refresh rate screen, but with my iPhone (12 Pro Max), what I care about most is (1) battery life and (2) connectivity / call quality. Because my iPhone is my primary work phone, I don’t need a screen refreshing at a high rate, as there is no benefit for my use case. I‘m sure that changes if your phone is your only or main device for video content consumption where it might be noticeable, but even then, isn’t battery life more important than screen refresh?
I’ll go one better. I have the iPhone 11 128GB Base model and have no complaints so far. I don’t even really notice that I don’t have OLED as I don’t really watch movies on my phone. At most I am watching YouTube for quick reference for cooking something or similar activity.

All iPhone lineups? I call BS... The regular iPhones will keep current display with minor brightness upgrade. The VRR, LTPO and 120Hz will be only for the Pros.. Same old same old.

120hz w/ variable refresh rate would mean it can do 24hz and maybe save battery life while doing so, correct? A lot of movies and video content are 24fps. And same for 30hz and 30fps content. Variable refresh rate seems like more of advantage on iPhone than just the higher refresh, assuming it increases battery life.

Ugh, only if that were true, 120 hz motion pro motion screens. :p

How will Apple differentiate the Pro models then?

It’s unfortunate the Mini model is likely being discontinued in 2022, or that there won’t be another 5.8” size option. I probably would’ve waited till then to upgrade but am probably going to upgrade early this fall so that I can a Mini model before it’s gone.

Could someone clarify for me exactly what does this mean for Face ID? Does it mean, Apple is gonna replace it with Touch ID as the primary way of authenticating on the Pro and Pro Max? Don’t get me wrong, but that feels like a step back or downgrade. Face ID does have its issues, but I should be available in addition to Touch ID.

Good for them, but where is iPhone 13? I don’t really care about iPhone 14 now. I just want iPhone 13.

Following that logic you don't need more powerful chips either, heck you don't even need an iPhone if you just want good battery life and call quality. Any cheap Android with a big battery will provide you that for much less money.

iPhone 15 to include holographic 4d projector......

I do wonder some days how bored these news sites are and just speculate for no reason....

I was wondering if the 120hz screen refresh rate is gonna be useful for a phone. I am using IPP now and I can see the refresh rate of 120hz is only useful for giant screen.

what do you guys think?

For sure, you could take it even further and I could simply get a dumb phone, which may be the smartest path forward, especially given the fact that I’ve got the small screen (Watch) and the large screen iPad Pro 12.9”, I might be best served downsizing since most of what I use the phone for, is for phone calls. I’m not going to go Android however, given the fact that I’ve been in the Apple eco-system for the past 25 years.

Maybe the rumored foldable iPhone will be a basic flip phone!

What's the big deal about 60hz vs. 120hz in the phone anyway? I can't imagine it makes a visual difference. It sounds like this is all marketing. Plus, 120hz crushes battery life by 20% (at least on the Galaxy phones).

I would prefer to keep screens as they are and improve battery life, especially if I would not be able to tell a difference with between the 60 and 120hz...

I really do hope Apple abandons the notch and goes with a punch-hole solution. The Samsung s21+ for example is a beautiful device.

Of course it makes a difference, with a phone there are lots of scrolling involved. Use any 120hz phone and put it back to 60hz, you gotta be blind to not notice the difference. And if battery is a concern, just set it at 60hz, like it's possible to do with the iPad Pro and so many Android devices.

If 120hz refresh brings with it zero PWM headaches, color me a happy camper. I’d gladly finally pay $1000 for a cellphone.
I doubt apple will even acknowledge this issue as there prolly be zero people in Apple that is sensitive to PWM plus deniers everywhere.
