My pixel 5 work phone has a 90hz display I believe, and the S20/21 has 120hz. I wonder why Apple has chosen to wait so long for what could be considered fairly standard at this point? Especially since their product releases have been somewhat lackluster. This is true across the board, their flagship desktops and laptops are still at 60hz. This has a lot to do with why my new setup is a high-end mini with a third party ultra wide display with 165hz refresh.
It's called milking a big feature each gen. They hold off on any new tech and then use one of these big features to market around. Like 5g this year. Honestly, they should have had 5g and 120hz back on the 11 series. The tech was available.

apple - always behind but positions as if they're first and of course best. not disagreeing with their strategy, but continuously amazed how they can spin the media attention as if they're breaking new ground.
I mean… this is an Apple-focused news site.

I’ll wait for the periscope camera.
Exactly. I’m right there with ya. I have 120 & 60Hz screens that use interchangeably everyday and it does nothing to faze me. This feature is so overrated to me I can’t stress it enough. 1000Hz refresh rate wouldn’t help ESPN’s laggy, janky website, so whatever. I’m glad some people see this as a useful feature. I’m happy for you. You can have it.

Let me know when Apple gets something I’d actually use and enjoy: A periscope zoom. I could see myself going back to iPhone whenever this finally comes to pass.

5G is marginally, at best, useful now. It most certainly wasn’t needed 2 years ago. It’s not anywhere near the game-changing feature it was made out to be. There’s nothing it does that substantially improves my user-experience over LTE.

120Hz I still couldn’t care less about and I have a phone that has it. Don’t even have it turned on. But that’s just me. I‘d rather have more battery.

I'm glad to hear people saying this.

It was so obviously just a typical ploy from the carriers/phone co's to push handset sales.

All it's really useful for right now is "draining the battery faster"

Of course, predictable. In my post history I previously noted Android phones are being sold for $400 with 90hz (which is 75% of the benefit) and it's indefensible for Apple to continue with the status quo for much longer. It's ****ing ridiculous that the 13's baseline won't have it.

I hope they just axe the loser "Pro" moniker/prefix in every lineup to be honest. Really stupid. Air is a fantastic name, as was/is the Retina display, but "Pro" just... god

I find it interesting how specs like the 120Hz refresh rate screens is a huge issue when someone puts it out there that they’re coming, yet living with the iPhone 12’s generates zero complaints from everyday consumers (myself included). I’ve had and have been using an iPad Pro 12.9” since 2019, so I know what it’s like to have a variable refresh rate screen, but with my iPhone (12 Pro Max), what I care about most is (1) battery life and (2) connectivity / call quality. Because my iPhone is my primary work phone, I don’t need a screen refreshing at a high rate, as there is no benefit for my use case. I‘m sure that changes if your phone is your only or main device for video content consumption where it might be noticeable, but even then, isn’t battery life more important than screen refresh?
Also, animation stutter is increasingly less noticeable as the screen gets smaller. The same bottom swipe up to home gesture for example makes UI elements traverse much farther in physical on-screen distance on the iPad in the same amount of time.

120hz might not be but LTPO with 120hz is a pro feature. It’s why you don’t see LTPO 120hz on any non flagship
So what’s not gonna make it a Pro feature when they eventually bring it down to the cheaper models? See where it doesn’t make sense? Also, the M1 MacBook Pro is described as Pro, but is really? I remember when Mac Design magazine featured illustrations by professional illustrators, the vast majority of them were using iMac G3’s.

I have the 11" ipad pro, yes I can notice the 120 hz on the iPad , but on the smaller screen with the iPhone 12 I don't miss it when I pick up my phone or even notice it is not 120.
likewise.

Although this seems to be welcome news in 2 future generations of iPhone's ... the real butter to salivate for is:
- is the 120hz variable as needed?
> no need to waste precious battery storage and battery life for something only techies or video game users will ever REALLY need (not want not notice - NEED).

Can it be used full time at users own choice, what's the battery tax to be paid doing so?

Does this mean that none of the 4 variants of unlucky iPhone 13 will have 120Hz screens? :(

Nowadays I imply “pro” as an insult and “Professional” as proper prefix for truly professional individual or group. “Pro” here “pro” there wears out Real fast. Marketing bs is the worst.

No different to other features arriving on older models later. There’s always new features coming out which the non pros won’t have. Next year likely will be bigger mp, year after periscope and notchless which non pros won’t have
