Honestly 120hz is well worth it. I would upgrade for this alone

No surprise on the 2022 models gives a year for pros to get it first

I doubt apple will even acknowledge this issue as there prolly be zero people in Apple that is sensitive to PWM plus deniers everywhere.
They will definitely never acknowledge it. It will just one day not be an issue anymore, and I’m hoping that day will come with 120hz refresh rate.

I can’t imagine that Face ID can fit in a small hole. If apple ditches Face ID they are admitting it was a mistake…

What's the big deal about 60hz vs. 120hz in the phone anyway? I can't imagine it makes a visual difference. It sounds like this is all marketing. Plus, 120hz crushes battery life by 20% (at least on the Galaxy phones).

I would prefer to keep screens as they are and improve battery life, especially if I would not be able to tell a difference with between the 60 and 120hz...
Not everyone is sensitive to the difference between 120Hz and 60Hz. If only using an iPhone @ 60Hz, my experience is fine, but next to a Pixel 4 @ 90Hz, the Pixel seems noticeably smoother to my eyes, yet alone the 120Hz you can find on the Galaxy and other Android phones (yes there are diminishing returns here). It's a welcome QoL improvement to me, as my phone would look and feel more responsive in everything I do.

The biggest 'innovation' Apple will bring to the party is properly implementing seamless VRR (what they call 'ProMotion'). Most Android phones simply let you pick between 60Hz or 120Hz; the Galaxy S21s introduced a kind-of seamless VRR implementation along with a new OLED emitter which drastically increased display efficiency. The difference between 120Hz and 60Hz went from a ~25% difference in battery life for the S20, to a mere ~8% difference for the S21. But their seamless VRR has quirks, like having a small delay before it kicks in, being tied to ambient light, and a low granularity of refresh rates it can switch to.

Everyone should welcome seamless VRR/ProMotion because it's simply more efficient than having a static refresh rate. Ideally Apple will let you choose a max refresh rate (e.g. 60Hz instead of 120Hz), so you could opt for better battery life. But it's possible Apple's implementation will make the difference negligible to begin with (unless you use your phone in a way that essentially triggers 120Hz all the time).

apple - always behind but positions as if they're first and of course best. not disagreeing with their strategy, but continuously amazed how they can spin the media attention as if they're breaking new ground.
They're definitely always first when it comes to the insane profit margins they reap for any old-hat feature ;)

But in this case, despite being years late, they might be the first 'true' seamless VRR implementation in a smartphone. They've been at this for a while, from the LTPO backplane patent they filed for back in 2013, the Adaptive-Sync addition to the DisplayPort 1.2a standard from VESA (of which Apple is a member) that was announced back in 2014, to the first LTPO implementation for OLED displays in the Apple Watch Series 4 back in 2018.

Apple definitely leans into their marketing to make it seem like everything they do is 'magically innovative', but when it comes to developing and patenting technology, they are far from behind.

It’s not a ‘pro’ feature, it’s just a way for Apple to nickel and dime/drip drop features till the make enough out of it to bring it down to cheaper models. Examples include OLED. It was a X, XS and 11 Pro feature before they brought it down to the cheaper 12. Surprised they would do it so quickly with the 14 though.

120hz might not be but LTPO with 120hz is a pro feature. It’s why you don’t see LTPO 120hz on any non flagship

I’ll go one better. I have the iPhone 11 128GB Base model and have no complaints so far. I don’t even really notice that I don’t have OLED as I don’t really watch movies on my phone. At most I am watching YouTube for quick reference for cooking something or similar activity.
I watch movies on my phones. On all of the OLED models, if I watch a night scene in a dim room it all starts to look like paint splotches. No you don’t get true blacks on the LCD but at the same time you don’t get that weird blotchy effect. My latest 13 mini display is the least offensive with this but the issue is still present.

Most importantly.. What's the Pwm frequency? I couldn't use the 12 Pro Max for 3 minutes without getting sick.. It was the first iPhone that I had that problem with
I was like that with the display on my 12 mini. I’m not sure what happened but I don’t have as bad of a reaction anymore. I do get eye fatigue but I get that with any kind of reading at my age now. I used to get so sick from pwm I got seizures with one of my older iPhones and had to trade for an LCD model.

There's no such thing as a pro motion display. It's just a 120hz display pro motion is just a marketing term.

These displays will be designed by and built by Samsung
How funny is it when youtubers like that unboxtherapy guy flick the screen as fast as they can and say 120hz is awesome.

Talked to Prosser today and he said that iPhone 17 will have a super tiny, almost invisible notch. Looking forward to it. He is always accurate
