For the love of God!! The damn new keyboard is $350? I'm going to buy the least expensive model wifi only (will tether when needed)... but OMG 1/3 more money for the keyboard is just way too expensive. That's roughly total $1500 for the package... and I'm not even buying the pencil.

I think I'm just gonna have to suck it up and tell them to take my money. I do Linux for a living. The A12Z plus the trackpad pretty much give me all the computing power I need for my job. Now it's just a matter of convincing my employer to allow me to use corporate tools (email, VPN) on it. All other features/specs, including the camera, are not of much importance to me.

I think it says a lot when everyone around me has no idea what Dex is. A feature that requires you to plug in a monitor, keyboard and mouse is pretty much dead in the water, compared to the iPad which has the strength of a strong app ecosystem behind it.

And that’s really the crux here. iOS get the best apps, which in turn means that pound for pound, more people are going to be using ios for meaningful work over android simply because that’s where the tools are.
On the flip side, now with the new enhanced cursor / trackpad support, there's never been a better time for the iPad Pro to have full support for 4K and 5K external displays.

Google DeX.

DeX allows you to connect to a monitor but it doesn't require it. DeX on tablets can be run natively and on the phone, you do not want to use a desktop GUI. With DeX, one has a flexibility of having a truly mobile device and a truly desktop setup for productivity.

On tablets? Not even close. As for DeX, I wonder if anyone is actually using it for anything. You know, actually using it.

People often confuse complexity with being advanced. In terms of usability, which OS is better thought out on tablets - I think iPadOS wins even without the app comparisons.
You are basically implying that a touchscreen tablet is better for productivity than a real desktop environment (which is what DeX offers). And yet people prefer laptops and desktops to tablets for productivity by a wide margin. Tablets are good for certain corner cases (mostly when mobility is required like those iPads in At&t stores) but that's about it.

The people who need a desktop or laptop environment will use a desktop or laptop respectively. No one is getting a phone and plugging it into an external monitor setup to replicate a desktop because it’s going to prove more cumbersome compared to the former, especially if this is going to be a long-term arrangement. It’s just not how people work.

As for the people who are using tablets to get meaningful work done, it makes sense to use the device with the larger app ecosystem, the more responsive touchscreen and the OS guaranteed of better support by its manufacturer.

It’s really about using the best tool the for job, and Dex simply isn’t it, no matter what angle I look at.

iOS is getting bloated and needs this ram.

You any proof of this statement?

Paying for the latest phone camera tech on an iPad just makes no sense to me.

6GB still isn’t enough IMO. My 10.5 IPP constantly reloads tabs in Safari.

Yet my aging 9.7 pro does just fine with my 1.5 trillion tabs...

The extra RAM is the one thing I was expecting Apple to do that made me hesitant to buy my refurb 2018 iPad Pros. I only use Microsoft Office, Notability, browsing the internet, YouTube and some other entertainment stuff for the next 4 years so hoping this holds up with the RAM.

So IOS is less complex and dumber to make it more usable, you can keep that claim to fame all day long :)

MacOS users using professional grade apps regularly is less than 15% of owners. Given the lessor apps and availability on IOS even compared to MacOS the numbers using them in a professional context is likely to be a pitiful number

Now to add insult to injury to get the simplest of functionality you have to fork out a disproportional amount to get a track pad and this is before we get to flexibility and diversity.

I am all for users finding niche solutions to their workflow that suit, but lets not exaggerate this usage

Else

Play games, watch movies do some, art dailies etc and enjoy

Ok I guess, but I'm passing on this mainly due to the Coronacession. But also because the display tech hasn't improved much, I don't need extra cameras, and my 2018 iPad Pro is already faster than it's capabilities. Maybe the next one in summer or autumn 2021 will have mLED or OLED with even smaller bezels (13.3"?) and 8GB RAM. The next one should also be on 5nm and with that will come either some battery life or larger speed improvements.

I'm curious about benchmarks for this weird Z chip as well as the speed of the SSD. Kinda nice that the keyboard case adds a USB-C port. Is that only for charging? Even so that allows it to be charged when having a dock on the side. Not that the Files app can handle actually moving more than like 30 files around between SD cards and external drives while also corrupting the SD card.

I love the form factor and this new mouse capability but ultimately the iPad Pro is still a gimped MacBook Air. It needs to grow up and get a big boy OS. I know the name changed last year but it's like a teen going by a different name and changing their hair color. Still not very useful, but annoyingly close. Somebody send the iPad Pro to college and get it an internship already!

I'd like to see if durability has been improved. I remember Apple changed the series of aluminum and added reinforcements when going from an iPhone 6/Plus to an iPhone 6s/Plus. Hopefully these iPads don't warp or bend. I'd like to replace my 10.5" iPad Pro in a few years with a used one of these.

I was looking for a display technology change. I will happily wait till that occurs and keep enjoying my 3rd generation LTE iPad Pro 11 with 1 TB and 6 gb ram. Also, the processor was not truly upgraded...first time Apple is doing that “Z” for a processor that’s also a generation behind current iphones.

With everything that’s going on in the world, I believe Apple took the most cost effective option so waiting is worth it for a truly better iPad experience or just get a older model and pay less.

E-F-F this company and their $350 keyboards. Like a completed fool I bought their keyboard for the first iPad Pro in 2017. It work working after about 14 months. Greediest Mofos in the business.

12 years running a software business building iOS products for clients -- but ive had about enough of this.

Again, your milage is not everyone's milage. I too brought the keyboard with my Pro 9.7" when it first came out.

Still works like a champ.

I do so wish folk would quit assuming they they're representative of everyone else.

I know my keyboard works fine still. I'm not going to say all the keyboards should be fine though because that would be just plain arrogant.

Fair point. I'm a developer, so I def use the product much more than normal people -- sorry if I didn't make that clear. Regardless of my use case the **** shouldn't fail in a couple years. Don't make me create a list of apple products that have failed on me. I've probably got $40k+ in apple purchases in the last 12 years.

Not accurate, more like $60k+. My trashcan Mac Pro was $7k alone after upgrades..
