Looks really cool for someone who:
A) Doesn't have an iPad
B) Has an older (older than the previous generation) iPad

Not enough improvements to convince me to get one. Having the fingerprint sensor might have caused me to give it a serious look though. Right now, all I have to gain is the retina display (which I can live without) and the processor. I currently have an iPad Mini.

In my opinion, they rushed to release this product.

Seems like Apple has been "busy" with something for 8 months and had no time for the iPhone and the iPad. Better specs, yes, but hardly innovating.

No and I will tell you why. I have been a huge Apple fan for quite sometime (not a brown nose though). The company is moving in a direction I never thought possible.
Still shipping an iPad with 16GB for $499 is downright wrong. That is taking advantage of its customers because they know that having an iPad you need to get at least the 32GB model by forking $599. Most graphic enforced games require at least 2GB of space. Not counting iWork, photos and music.
It goes to show you that by selling an old processor (2-3 year old technology) at $399 is just plain wrong.
When you are losing market share, you have to get customers back on the bandwagon. Offer the 1st gen Mini got $299, revamp the iPad 2 with an A6X processor (at least) for $399 and call it iPad 5, iPad Brick (kidding) or whatever they wanna call it.
Apple is going in a "I'm better than thou" attitude, it won't last long.
If Samsung was smart, they would make their products less plasticky and bam Apple will quickly lower their prices.
I hate to be taken advantage of and I feel like Apple is doing just that.

Yes, I'll get one. TouchID, I couldn't care less whether its on an ipad or not as I prefer it on my phone for obvious reasons. I'll take Space Grey with the tan Leather smart case please thank you.

Agree with you 100%

I'm very concerned for the future, especially the iPhone 6. I wan't a bigger screen (around 4.7 - 5 inches) but WILL NOT pay a higher price than the current price of the 5S. If it goes that way, which I think it will, I have no other option than to abandon the iPhone. I already cancelled my new iPad purchase plans and will stay with my iPad 2 and MacBook Air.

I drew the line on the sand and Apple passed it yesterday. I would let this slide in 2010-2011, but not in late 2013 considering how the competition has improved considerably.

Retail stores will announce when but my bet is that they have some on hand on Nov 1st for the Air. Store pick up with Apple is a toss up. They may announce that one can purchase online like the iPhone 5S and you can pick it up at Apple store. Just look for the information on the Apple online store purchase link as shown on the below photo

Nov 1st, 12 midnight for those on the West Coast USA and 3 AM East Coast
Have you personally ordered something online and picked it up in the Apple store on "release" day? I will check for that, I'm hoping I can order at 12:00AM PST and then pick up when the store opens that'd be nice.

I actually think I'm to the point where I could sell my 4th Gen + Mini and just get the new Mini w/ Retina. I use my current Mini more than the 4th but love the 4th for the display.
Oh decisions decisions.

I have an iPad 2 which I will be replacing with one. I like my iPad 2 but it has shown some slowness (besides not being retina). My husband wants my iPad 2 so he shall get it although I offered to buy him an iPad air as well. He is too cheap though.

I would say the 16GB thing is highly disappointing and I was a bit shocked to see it flashed on the screen. There are some people who will use the iPad for only web browsing though. I have a 32GB iPad 2 and I am no where near full with a ton of apps but I want a 64GB iPad Air. It is a bit of a stab that I will have to pay $100 more than I expected but whatever.

Is anyone keeping their 4?

I've heard quite a few say that they were keeping their 4 for a couple more months. It's already rumored that a potential new iPad could be released 6 months down the road with touch id etc

Keep my iPad 3 which is still doing a very good job, also under iOS 7.

But I'm sure I can't resist to get a Mini with Retina (just not sure on storage)

As for the iPad Air: also think there is something behind that name. Fitting to 12"/13" rumors we read before.

in 6mos

So, in 6 months we will see update with A7X, TouchID, 8MP camera

lollllll
Than my wife will get a upgrade from a iPad2 to a iPad5. She is more than happy with her ipad2, but doesn't mind when I upgrade. She just wen't from the iphone4s to the iphone5.

getting an ipad air. very disappointed in it but sold my old ipad already, overall i felt like the event as a whole was more geared toward macs and mavericks as a whole.

I could actually see them doing that because the supplies of the sensors are short currently. But when it gets plentiful, then they may do an update.

Yep

I've been waiting for the iPad mini with Retina for several months...but now I've changed my mind I'll be picking up a Space Gray iPad Air.

Have any of you used your iPhone as a hotspot for an iPad? How well does that work? Wondering if I should spend the extra for the LTE version or just use my iPhone 5s as a hotspot?

I use my iPad 90% of the time in places where I have wifi. For the remaining 10% I use tethering.

Using wifi tether you will get LTE speeds, but have the inconvenience of having to make the connection time and time again whenever you stop using the ipad (screen is locked) and when you want to use it again.

If you do a bluetooth tether, you save battery life on the iPhone, the iPad will remain connected to the iPhone no matter what (very convenient) but the big CON is that the speed is very very slow (about 1.5 mbps). For my use, the speed is enough though.

I think that Apple called the new iPad the "Air" to make it easier to bring out a new version before fall of 2014. When was the last time Apple messed up the naming scheme? The "new" iPad, aka the 3. Can you say Deja Vu?

Agreed. I sold my ipad 2 in September , I regret it, I dont want to cough up another $650 for an ipad that have nothing new to offer. Unbelievable .

I'll be camping out on the 1 to her the ipad air in silver. Not sure if anyone can answer this question for me, are you able to type papers with iWorks(documents)?

Contrary to what Microsoft would have you believe, you can get work done on an iPad. I've been without one for a few months now, but I used to carry an Apple wireless keyboard in my backpack and I was able to use pages to do work, write contracts, e-mails, reports. Works really well unless you have to use pre-formatted garbage made by someone using MS Office, then you'll have trouble.

I'm planning on being in line the morning of the 1st for my replacement. 64gb in Space Grey for me. I can't wait to start using the collaboration features.

Line?

Oh man, you guys think we'll have to get to the stores early and wait in line!?

What time are you guys planning on going?

The Apple store near me opens at 10:00 AM. I'm going in about 10:30 just because I don't feel like waiting in line and don't think the 32GB will sell out in the first hour. I think if you're getting a 32 or 64GB good chances are those won't sell out THAT fast.

Nice... thinner and lighter...

But the bad is that the iPad is still as useless as ever. Over the past year it's really been collecting dust. My iPhone does pretty much everything it does and more! And I can fit the iPhone in my pocket.

I feel Apple went half way with the iPad... but part of what's slowing down their innovation on it is iOS. I say this in the context of the MS Surface. This device has two things that the iPad lacks:

  • A retractable stand built-in
  • Razor thin, super light keyboard cover with backlighting

And Windows 8 allows you to deal with a file system and real desktop if you want, and then easily switch back to the simple touch environment. In other words, by design, Microsoft's Surface tablet is much better out of the box for productivity because of both hardware and software. Apple's iPad is much more limited to the point of zero productivity out of the box because of software and hardware.

No, I'm not using crappy third party solutions for a stand and keyboard. That **** was never meant to work with the iPad and looking at all the ways people try to retrofit this stuff on the iPad is like watching someone throw grease on hot teflon and hope that it sticks.

Apple has opportunities to innovate a keyboard at least but here we are with some ugly full case covers again that really do nothing other than act as a flimsy stand.

Not sure where they're going with the iPad and don't get me wrong, it's good at strict consumption, but for productivity it's a stillborn. Hitting a flight tomorrow for a long trip. I'd much rather have one device like the Surface... not even a laptop... I get the best of both worlds.
