lol, that would be funny but I don't think it's anything like that. Until today I thought that they are delaying because of they wanted to start selling a new display at the same time with the Mac Pros but from the announcement it's pretty clear that this is not happening. So I've got to think there were some component supply or design issues.

Maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet, but I'm envisioning this office in Cupertino where an executive has been watching a big display counting up the nMP units on hand with a finger poised on the "go" button.

They made the "Fall" deadline with hours to spare!

(Technically, the last day of fall around these parts (the northren hemisphere, that is) is Dec 20)

I think it's just Apple gearing up supply. Some folks have been waiting 3 years or more to replace their Mac Pros. That 3 years is from when the 2010 models were out; like if someone didn't want to upgrade to Westmere. Some folks longer.

Then you have those that went with the iMac (because it was faster compared to the baseline MP), but really needed Xeons and more than 32GBs of RAM.

Then you have those that have mobile systems (MBPs).

Then you have those that have been waiting to make the switch from PC to Mac.

Don't get me wrong, I am still a lover of big iron systems from HP running Adobe and Avid products, but for the "boutique", freelance, and small shops out there this machine is a long time coming. I was on the edge because I really thought the price for the base model was going to skyrocket, or that you'd have a crippled baseline model, but that's not the case. $3000 starting out is for that base model is VERY much what I was hoping for.

It will indeed sell very VERY well.

What's with the $9999 price? I understand Apple's prices, are $.something.9999 but can't you just write "Maxed out will cost $10,000"? and not riddle with $9999

ahh...the season where people will kill each other for money to buy this thing or steal this thing.

I don't want Apple to rush anything to market before it's ready, but I can't get rid of the feeling, that more often than not Apple is delaying things purely because they can, because they think primarily about milking money as much as possible and not about advancing technology faster. Only fast enough. They are definitely not "hungry" anymore. :(

I for one would love "rampant technology for technology’s sake", when and where it makes sense - like releasing Thunderbolt display with iMac like glare-less glass and USB3, for example. That could easily be done a year ago, and a new 4K model about now. But they just make us wait and wait.

Two other possible explanations, not as sinister as yours:

1. Apple doesn't have the engineering staff yet to do everything they could be concentrating on. There's a reason they're building that new headquarters, in other words.

2. With displays, I get the impression that everything is turning around the availability of IGZO at high enough production levels. Once they committed to that technology, they can't be offering interim stop-gap compromises. They're going to "make you wait" until they get the manufacturing worked out.

Agreed, not to mention that Dell, HP, and ASUS don't even have display product cycles that run that fast.

I made an account just to tell you that was not funny or clever. What the **** is wrong with the people on this website?

Personally, I'd say the idea you went through all that trouble just to gripe about someone's attempt at humor says a lot more about you than about anyone else posting here.

It's just a guess anyway, as Apple haven't released detailed build to order pricing yet.

It's not really meaningful to look at the "fully loaded" price either, as buying that spec without at least also getting some heavy duty external storage isn't something that's going to happen much in the real world.

Are these going to have a review embargo?
Media embargoes are enforced when a product is pre-announced; the reviews are embargoed during the period between the pre-announcement and the actual shipping.

After the product releases to the general public, any random schmuck can buy it and review it, so the point of the review embargo is rendered moot.

In this case, the media embargo would be happening right now (which key members of the press have demo loaners). The embargo would end tomorrow morning if they had one at all.

That said, this is not a consumer product, and sales won't be driven by Pogue or Mossberg saying how purty it is or how fast Safari loads.

Some of the larger business customers probably had access to a handful of pre-release beta hardware, and eligible for field replacements when the production hardware is available. It would be in Apple's best interest to heavily test this computer doing tasks it was designed to do: heavy computational work like CAD, 3D modeling, etc. You can't just deploy a couple hundred test units within Apple's headquarters to marketing and administrative types who will mostly use Mail, Safari, etc.

And there are so many variables for the international crowd. I just saw someone on another thread here say he was quoted 7250 GBP for a loaded 12 core, that comes to over $11k. Does that include VAT, what discounts were in place, et cetera. I'm done playing the what-if game and am content to wait until the actual BTO prices come out; then I'll decide how to trick out my new rig.

I believe I paid close to that price for my Amiga 2000 :) How times have changed... I personally don't like the design. Will it go the way of the cube? Time will tell. But I'm sure it will be wicked fast!

i waited, and waited, and waited for the mac pro refresh, then they announced this useless ornament and i spent the money on building a MUCH more powerful PC, Hackintoshed it, and now i have the Mac Pro that "Should" have been, Internal, easy to upgrade 2TB SSD Raid boot drive and an 8TB raid with redundancy for local storage, easily, "OFF-The-Shelf" upgradeable high end graphics, and a user replaceable CPU, and drives,

All in one BOX, no messy thunderbolt cables, caddies, external raid enclosures and additional plug sockets to find.

Out the back of my box are three cables, Video, Keyboard and Ethernet (mouse is wireless), i have a workstation that's fit for purpose, and is not a spaghetti mess of cables and extra boxes.

it seems apples approach is "here is a piece of art" its natural state is to be in the middle of rats nest of wires, enjoy (oh and you'll need to buy a new one every three years or less).

My first thought was US production. Not because the US would itself be slower, but because bringing a new factory anywhere up to speed is a challenge. But yeah, probably something as simple as Intel or some smaller vendor missing a deadline. Well be able to tell if certain configs are consistently harder to get.

They wanted it dressed to the nines for the near year!

Got mine in 87, so yeah. Btw, it was more than I needed at the time but it ended up influencing my entire career, up to and including today. So totally worth it.

Everyone wanted the cube, until they saw how slow it was. As long it's got the beans, the new pro will do fine.

A bit overkill for a college student with an accounting major...isn't it. I still think it is a work of art.

(My favorite part is how the I/O lights up when you turn it to face you! Classically Apple.) :apple:

Your post might have been useful had you actually qualified your specs, rather than just thrown out generic terminology.
