I wonder if they will still use a Dynamic Island type pop-up showing various app functions etc. Obviously they may change the name, but I really like DI, and now that it’s a standard across all new iPhones maybe the app developers will continue to develop it.

I definitely prefer a hole for the frontal camera.
I know that are some symmetry-fanatics here that want the all-display iPhone, but I understand physics and I don’t want to sacrifice photo quality, specially in low-light

Something that be much better, is the technology to make the hole “transparent” when the user wants to use the frontal camera, and after that, it can be again part of the screen.

Welcome to 2020 Apple!
The fact that a multi billion dollar company can’t fix something simple and has to make up for it with an gimmick called “Dynamic Island” says it all.

But then again, 5 years after doesn’t seem that bad. They discovered nearly 20 year old technology this year by some rules from overseas lol.

I truly don’t see having complete edge 2 edge screen as a priority. Apple decided this design aesthetic was so crucial that starting with the notch,
  1. Had to procure production of irregularly shaped screen panels
  2. Probably had to invest additional resources to implement OS and API changes supporting screen cutouts and related complexity
  3. Had to come up with something to justify a hole for a camera, so expanded the area for other information (DI)
  4. Had to come up with a way to justify the DI weirdness to app developers to encourage adoption
I would have happily had an iPhone that sported an additional 3mm top bezel for the camera and avoided all that crap. Oh, and give me back my VPN status indicator I can see without swiping (still sore about losing that with the notch).

As for the look, location, and contents of DI, all of that could have been done in a regular rectangular display panel. Experimenting with notification paradigms could have been done without some of the additional investments outlined above. At this point it feels like a bunch of people sitting around trying to justify their jobs by adding complexity.

I do not like the idea, because how can you cover the camera with a sticker, if it is under the display? Then the sticker will hide a part of the display and the advantage of a camera under the display is gone.

And why do people want to film themselves? 90% of people are not beautiful enough to get filmed.
And 99.999999% of people (including you) are not of enough interest to need a sticker on their iPhone camera.

I have to believe the person who wrote the article forgot that it was UDC by the end as was typing UPC… or was it autocorrect or is there some other thing that is a UDC that’s called UPC like under panel display technology? IDK

Disregarding your comment about most people not being photogenic, I'm pretty sure you'll be very aware of when the camera is in use, because the pixels directly above it will need to switched off in order for it to work (otherwise the lights from the LEDs - microLEDs, whatever - would blind the sensor). And if you're THAT concerned about being surreptitiously recorded, perhaps smartphones in general aren't a technology you should be using.

So it seems we’re back to a two year upgrade cycle, if the reduction of cut out is a feature you care about. iPhone 17 Pro with hopefully a smaller island as Face ID goes underneath screen. iPhone 19 Pro as front facing camera then goes underneath screen. My gut tells me full under screen doesn’t make it to the 19 Pro. We seem to have the Dynamic Island for three generations (14, 15, 16). I would bet that Apple will leverage a smaller Dynamic Island for another three generations (17, 18, 19). Maybe they’re just pushing for this in the 19th generation pro knowing there will be delays so they can arrive at iPhone 20 Pro.

I'd be fine if they got rid of the front facing camera altogether, but then again I'm not one to take selfish-ies constantly. I always liked the OnePlus 7 Pro's popup selfie camera idea. I understand the limitations at that time, but at least the phone offered a full screen without interruption with a 16 megapixel popup camera for those who can't live without taking 397 selfish-ies a day.

I prefer the OnePlus 7 Pro implementation regarding the front facing camera, although that does not use Face ID...

Many Chinese phone manufacturers have tried the under display front camera but the output is like photo and video taken from early days of the smartphone as we know it [late 2000s to early 2010s]
It didn't use Face ID of course, but the popup camera could be used for Face Unlock, which was a nice bonus to the popup design implementation of the front facing camera.

My issue is the displaying of notifications/status information is becoming too fragmented. There’s the top status bar (parts of it relegated to Control Center due to the notch/pill), notification banners, and the DI which is a bit of both. They should recombine those into a single consistent, practical and unobtrusive UI.

Under-the-glass camera is something that I've been waiting for ever since Apple went with a notch. I don't have much use for the front-facing camera on my iPhone, but the idea of having an under glass front-facing camera on the iPad centered in the screen would make video conferencing more immersive.

Ok I will not be updating next year... holding on to my 15PM until this all screen phone... Seriously... I'm not updating!.... for real this time.

Dynamic Island, we hardly knew ya

It seems like that was always kind of a stopgap. They don’t actually need the display cutout to do Dynamic Island. In fact it should be further up the display back where the original, smaller notch used to be. And this way it could be turned off completely, theoretically.

Apple shrinks Dynamic Island in 2025.
Dynamic Island disappears in 2027.
Apple will say "the Island is sinking due to climate change" and then market the iPhone 19 as their first 100% sustainable iPhone.
F'n hilarious!

With a FineWoven screen, an Under FineWoven Camera, and Under FineWoven Face ID! BOOM!

Thats a reasonable expectation but you have to know why all the companies that tried with this idea dumped it very soon. The camera and the display part over the camera both were a big compromise and all the reviews called the technology pointless for most users. Thats how most Android OEMs then settled for punch hole cameras.
I think if anyone can make this work, Apple can.
