I like improved translation in general (voice and text). I hope Apple improves translation. Even before gen AI, Apple's translation was already behind Google's.

"Apple will be able to match some of these features when the updated version of ‌Siri‌ rolls out in 2026, but it is behind on image editing features and live AI capabilities since there is no dedicated Apple-designed LLM as of now."

I found this quite funny. We're giving a lot of credit to Apple's vaporware (personalized Siri). Google will steal our data, but the AI features will definitely be better than Apple. Maybe we can at least credit Apple with giving google some ideas even if Apple couldn't execute.

So many of these things sound incredibly annoying, unless they work absolutely flawlessly. Even before it was called AI I always hated it when things tried to figure out what I wanted and to do it for me. No, you never get it right. And that's way more annoying than doing nothing at all.

Just make it super simple for ME to do what I want. Make it so specific information (particularly my OWN information) is always in the same specific place rather than sometimes showing up here, sometimes there in this or that summary, sometimes not showing up at all making me think I didn't actually have or save something I thought I did.

Relying so heavily on trying to figure out what you need is a fool's errand. Even actual PEOPLE, as in personal and/or executive assistants and whatnot, are only so-so good at it. (Except for those rare gems worth their weight in gold.)

And I have a lot less patience with THINGS that are distracting me with the wrong information than I do with people.

I wish they'd focus more on organization and slick efficient navigation of that information than trying to do my thinking for me.

(Just my ranting opinions, as an apparently aging tech guy.)

Camera Coach

Looking forward to read peoples view on that functionality. Probably should read them at photo / camera sites, not here.

The AI fatigue is real. Sorry, but, not sorry…tired of AI this and AI that. Nothing but a glorified search engine. I guess tech is out of ideas for new hardware, so this is their smoke and mirrors moment to buy themselves some more time to dream something up.

Hardware is all mostly comparable. Google is the innovator in AI space. Will definitely have rough edges with their features. Apple is happy following and minting from its fan base. It may be just a matter of time before these devices disappear in their current form factor.

Looks like an iPhone clone with a different camera bump.

Bunch of software features ripped straight from the iPhone too. Google originality goes away more and more every year. Copying software features is one thing, but copying 90% of the device design is another.

sure seems like Alphabet threw AI at every possible thing they could think of in the hopes it will generate massive publicity and maybe even an actually useful use case or two, but the latter is still to be determined

Auto Best Take and Add Me might be useful features. Good to see voice translate supporting more languages. Don't think I will use some of the other features.

Apple couldn’t even ship half of these features by 2026, yet some of you miserable people here are already complaining that nobody cares about any of these truly life changing features.

My wife’s family does not speak English and my whole life I’ve always had a very difficult time connecting with them because of this. I am beyond excited to have better ways to communicate, stay in touch, and build the relationship I’ve always wanted to have with them.
Microsoft Translator has been around since 1999, supports 279 languages and works very well.

Well. AI did get Google Deepmind a
a Nobel prize for developing Alphafold, which enabled protein structure prediction with uncannily high accuracy: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistry/2024/press-release/ I guess that is a pretty useful use case to state the obvious. Meanwhile, Apple doing Genmoji’s ;)

Just about all of these features have existed on smart phones in some form or another for years, ever since companies started putting NPUs into their SOCs. Which for Apple was A11 or A12. Cuing up suggestions for apps/data based on behavior. Back then it was called "Neural" or "Machine Learning" before the "AI" hype machine swallowed these terms and everyone can point at something a phone from 2018 could do and call it bleeding edge AI. We've gotten good at chaining together algorithms with LLMs and other generative models, but it just feels like the natural evolution of things. Feels like we're being sold the same thing over and over, even from Apple.

Also, I really worry about these AR + LLM models like the Gemini live feature. I don't doubt the usefulness. I worry it will take off and the AI mania people have to a whole new level of reliance. I work with a couple of people that you can't have a constructive/conceptual conversation or ask them for input without the first thing they want to do is pull out ChatGPT. It's like they have no confidence without it. Now AI will annotate the real world for you so you don't have to ever bother with pesky tasks like looking at a diagram, or needing reading comprehension skills...

It’s called a Bubble! And the crash and burn will be along sometime soon, as investors realize they’ll never make the fairy-gold unicorn profits they were sold!

Even Altman has said the bubble is going to pop.

Despite all of the hype and the relentless (!) attempts to insert ‘AI’ into anything and everything (poorly), there is true innovation, and we will see a transformed world within the next decade. And we won’t necessarily be happy with the results, either.

I witnessed a demo last week of a system being implemented which will create new product ‘teams’ comprised of 80% AI agents and 20% Humans. This is not a small company by any means, and the impact will be felt throughout their industry. That’s in one specific industry, but (and others are watching) it’s just going to be one of the first wave to embrace the change.

I’m frankly not that enthused about the ever-expanding extent of ‘AI’ features being added to phones. All I can wonder is…what will happen to battery life on such a physically limited (in dimensions and mass) device when every running process calls on AI?!
Obviously, features like live translation, transcription, summaries, and automatically generated accurate action plans and well-executed tasks are perfect for phones, as are some other features that will get a lot of use.
