For the expected iPhone 7S models, as well as the iPhone 8, we think ams's content increases due to the inclusion of its full spectral sensing ambient light sensor, as already seen in the iPad Pro for that device's True Color screen functionality. We estimate this to be a material step-up in content from the $0.60 range to $1.00.

I bet Tim Cook spat out his coffee when he read that

I'm just trying to picture the next iPhone presentation...Presenting a new iPhone 7S, then what? One more thing? Then they pull the drapes to show off an iPhone 8?
That doesn't make sense at all. There's only going to be one new model, a Standard size & Plus size.... Whatever they choose to call it.

It's a reasonable assumption. I'm not sure how much it matters to me, though. I haven't seen enough from TruTone to actually convince me it's all that useful. Perhaps that's because I do enough photography to know that I don't want my color perception played with too much.

I much prefer switching to a dark theme vs making my screen piss yellow.

This is probably just an excuse to pass off lower quality lower cost piss yellow display panels like people experienced having to play display lotto with iPhone 7/7+.

It's not going to be called 8.
No matter if they call it Edition or whatever, it still makes no sense. A four year old design along with a new design. I guess apple feels they can do that.

If the iPhone Edition actually starts at $1000... and if they actually release two more models with the 2014 design...I think it will be time to finally jump ship.
Agreed

...migrated my iCloud services to Outlook today; it was pretty painless (apart from all my years for birthdays somehow updated to 1904). Sick and tired of clunky iCloud integration with anything that isn't Apple (e.g. Windows icloud app) and the backwards iCloud webUI. With every rumour about the new iPhone I'm closer to that S8 order, sad times.

Why is variable colour in a display desirable? Genuine question.

I thought the goal with displays generally was accurate colour reproduction.. adherence to sRGB, Rec2020, etc.

I don't see how adjusting the colour in the display according to the light you are in is helpful.. I get the night shift idea, reducing the blue light content in the evening.. that is the goal.. you understand that the screen will be yellower, and less accurate.

But for general daytime use, wouldn't I want the display colour to be as accurate as possible, and all the time, regardless of the environmental conditions..? Brightness adjusts automatically, so you don't have an overly bright screen in a dark environment, but why would I want the colour accuracy to change?

This.

Apple might charge more for having OLED screens but I don't see 3 different models happening. Especially with rumors suggesting the iPhone Edition won't be released alongside the "7S/+" but will be announced, etc. That defeats the purpose of an anniversary phone release (let alone the fact that the anniversary is really in June. . .) It's all messy and I doubt Apple wants that. Come May/June we should see "Apple scraps plan to release 3 models - all 2017 phones will feature OLED screens said sources"

I also believe they will either do away with numbers or just call it iPhone 8/8+

I'm more interested in a "true tone" camera sensor. Would be nice to be able to compensate for tungsten or LED light sources for better color accuracy. You would think they could already do this in SW.

I just played with the Samsung Galaxy S8 display model at my local Best Buy. It's definitely the most esthetically pleasing phone since the iPhone 4.

Plus, the software has come a looong way since a couple of years ago with their clunky Android skin. Not as nice as the Google Pixel UI/UX, but still very impressive.

I'm hoping Cupertino has awakened from their siesta and will release a phone worthy of the iPhone title.

By the way, the S8 has a headphone jack!

The 800 lb gorilla that is sitting quietly in the corner is how would Apple handle those on the upgrade program. Assuming Apple would have two levels of new phones for the first time, would they get the 7s or the 8?

Interesting. I thought if they were going to add it, they'd do it last year with the 7. There were suggestions it'd never make its way to iPhone as you wouldn't really notice the difference on the smaller screens of the iPhones.

True Tone is incredible. Probably my favorite feature of my 9.7 Pro.

Works the same as it does today. If there is a price delta, customer just pays it, or spreads it out. If you're paying $32/month now, and the new phone(s) are more, you send your old phone in and starting paying $42/month or whatever. Bad gorilla!

Would you mind explaining why, please?
I've not used an iPad Pro, and I'm struggling with understanding why True Tone is beneficial..

No thanks I will not take bloatware, touchwiz and exploding phones
Bingo. The nice thing about Apple devices is they aren't loaded wth junk. About the only thing I may not want is their stock apps when I have found alternatives I like better. Even then the stock apps are actually well designed and useful and are what most people use.

I wish true tone was tweakable like night shift. I wear glasses that filter blue light and these with true tone make the display too pink. If I could just tune it down a little it would be great. Looks great without my glasses, but then I can't read lol.

It's basically an advanced way for the screen to properly adjust both colors and white balance based on ambient light conditions. If having an extremely accurate white balance and color gamut is important to you, then the True Tone display is really the only way to go. It's not like Night Shift, i.e. there's not a noticeable yellow tint.

Go to Apple's site, it's explained there. TrueTone mirrors the way we read from books and magazines, and see art and photographs in native environments -- so it mimics natural conditions better. Unless you need color accuracy for a specific application, it's a more harmonious experience than a glaring artificial light source that does not blend into your surroundings.

I guess that explains why he was sitting quietly and not raising a ruckus. ;)

I don't want true tone or night whatever. I want my phone to always have a cooler color temperature. What settings do I need to set or adjust for that? Warm tones look dingy and dirty to me.
