About a decade late to the party... even Nexus phones had wireless charging years ago.

And what about it? I don't buy a phone to appreciate how cool the charging tech is. I just want to use the phone. Placing a phone on a charging mat is not the ideal way of using it.

They why do so many people want wireless charging in an iPhone? If this is your stance now, don't you dare throw a parade if Apple decides to implement wireless charging.

Hopefully it's long range and not inductive charging. I would hate to think that Apple is playing catchup with old technology that's been in Android phones for years

I'd rather they just added USB C 3.1 with quick charge and got rid of lightning all together. I really don't see the point of wireless charging when in 15-20 minutes my Pixel XL gains 20% battery and this is not even the fastest charging phone on the market.

Even with the rumored wireless charging; Apple would need to get rid of the iPhone's dependency on iTunes to transfer music/files before I'd ever consider getting another.

Why exactly can't you pick up your phone? You can. The charging stops and resumes when you put the phone back. In addition, you can still use the old way (with wire) so it's a win/win.

Some customers would rather have a faster horse.

I don't understand why they just didn't bother release 2 version of the Redesigned model, who's even going to buy the 7S and 7S Plus...
Oled supply is lacking

Ha ha ha!! Yup, going there!!!:D Because it's true. If you regularly pull your cable out of your device at any x, y, or z angle/vector other than 180, 0, 0, relative to the charging port, and especially if you are pulling it out by grabbing the cable section and not the connector itself, premature damage will be caused.

The only Apple original Lightning cables I've ever had problems with were those chewed on by my kids when they were toddlers! ;)
I've had problems with almost all my lightening cables. Local Apple Store always swaps them out when I bring them in.

I would pay $999 for a device that has many of these features:
  • 5" display using a newer display tech that still reproduces colors accurately
  • Minimal bezels so it's not bigger than the 4.7" 6/6s/7, and maybe even shorter
  • Dual cameras
  • Wireless charging
  • Two day battery life
  • That rumored 3D depth sensing module - perhaps for better portrait mode or facial recognition?
  • New casing materials
  • 3/4GB RAM
  • Better 3D Touch/Taptic engine
  • TouchID built into the display
  • Improved low-light camera
  • 60fps 4K
  • 30fps live photos
  • >= 480fps slow-mo (Sony's latest mobile imaging modules can handle 1080p at 960fps)
  • 256GB storage
  • USB 3.0 over lightning like the iPad Pro for fast camera transfers (if it even has a port aside from diagnostic, lol)
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Better balanced stereo audio—on my 7 the earpiece volume is noticeably lower than the one on the bottom, which somewhat reduces the stereo affect
  • OIS on the telephoto lens
I could see this being a third tier "special edition" device if Apple removes most of the buttons. First of all, many people might not be ready to go completely button-less. Second of all, it might be difficult for Apple to scale up if they go button-less, as having Touch ID built into the display could prove to be an issue at scale as it's a pretty radical design change and I think I read some rumors that there have been some issues with manufacturing involving that part.
That's how much a current 256g iPhone costs.

The only reason I want wireless charging is to stop people complaining about the lack of wireless charging...

Unless it is true wireless charging (not needing a mat to rest the device on whilst it charges) all wireless charging brings is the need for multiple charging mats that are wired to a power outlet.
I want wireless charging so people who claim it is a gimmick now will say how great it is when apple does it. In fact I hope they get rid of the lightening port altogether.

Haven't been this hyped for an iphone for a long time. Of course if this is all a hoax and they release an incremental update I will be LIVID.

Me too. Perhaps you can join me in my protest to set myself on fire if I don't get my way. Show a brother some solidarity.

Why would you carry a pad with you? You can still use your regular cable for charging. The pad stays home.

As others have said Apple probably isn't going to introduce a pad the size of a boat anchor. They have to be careful though if it is too small there will be numerous threads about how people will lose it.

I think Apple understands at this point they can't just slap together a pad that is the same as what Samsung has and try to pass it off as innovative with a straight face. If it is truly wireless that would be awesome and the people saying they didn't want it or need it will eat crow. If it is inductive Apple will have some sort of new take on it. Just like they had with Air Pods.

If they do pull the port they will need to have some interesting solutions to syncing. "What are you doing this weekend?" "Well I am going to have to stay home to wirelessly sync my phone. I see that I have 189GB out of 256GB remaining. Can we make it Tuesday?"

Of course that scenario is a bit humorous but it will be interesting to see what they do if that happens. My only concern about the port is it could force people into Apple's services. I don't want to sell a kidney to buy their phone and then have to give blood to pay them monthly while I recover.

Interesting times ahead.

Such a "meh" feature. Add it to the list though, because lots of people want / complain about it.

Meh feature? Are you kidding me? The last update was meh, the last 2 year updates have been meh at best. If it wasn't for Samsung's glitch, Apple sales would be where they are right now.

If the wireless charging is 3-5 feet away, this is a game changer. Especially if they can put it in ear phones and laptops. I haven't forgiven Apple removing the amazing magsafe2. But imagine, no more frayed cords (so sick of replacing crappy Apple power cords), no more constant plugging it in.

I'm not a fan of dongles or cords, but this is the first real step of moving away from a cord world. Imagine all the other devices that will adopt a protocol like this, kids toys, wireless cameras, watches, prosthetics.. Wearable tech actually because useful if you don't need to constantly be plugging it in.

Tim is over do for some innovation, and personally I hate the loser. But kudos to the engineers (rumors are Apple is licensing this tech) for developing it. And Kudos to the Apple engineers who integrated it! And once Apple puts it in the mainstream, there will be mass adoption!

Now that's what I like to hear! Was afraid it would only be for the premium model.

Can you explain to me how some people never have problems with lighting cables and some always have problem with them? I'm still using first cable from iPone 5 and apart from being yellow it is fine and has not suffered any damage.
Same here. I've had multiple lighting cables and have never had any problems with it.
I think the difference is in how you remove it.
I always hold the plug and pull it out but I think some people are holding it by the cord and yanking it out.

Yes, it's the people.

I have had one or two Apple cables fray on me. I think in my case it is how they are stored in your bag sometimes. The one I have at home that never leaves the house is as good as new. This leads me to believe it isn't how I plug or pull it out.

Although I have to admit Apple cables seem frail and I haven't experienced cables on other devices fraying the same way even though they go through the same conditions.

Moral of the story is I am more careful with my Apple cables these days. Thankfully I have a gazillion of the things so they almost seem disposable anyway.

Actually thinking about it more the cords that frayed were ones when I used the devices plugged in. Like one for an iPad I use when I am in bed. Keeping it plugged in and using it while charging bends the cord back and forth. This is probably the reason I only notice it on Apple products. I have never had any other devices I use like this while plugged in.

For the Plus it's $969. This would be for a mid-range size. But yeah, I could see it starting at $999 for a 128GB iPhone Pro.

I wonder if it would have an @3X display…

Realize that this is only speculation, but a $1,000 "premium" iPhone? So what happens when Apple uses OLED screens and wireless charging in the "premium" iPad Pro lineup, the cost of the wifi/cellular version jumps to $2,000? Getting out of hand.

At this point, except the fact that the 7S might be cheaper.. Why would anyone buy the 7S instead of the new "premium" model...

Whats the difference between (1) iPhone plugs into mains supply (2) iPhone wirelessly charges via "device" that plugs into mains supply?

There are tons of options for wireless chargers these days. They don't have to be a block or pad on a flat surface with an ugly wire sticking out of it.

I have one built into my desk at work. Heck, even Ikea has a range of furniture with QI chargers already built in. That might be moot though, Apple surely won't go for solutions that are available more or less everywhere without paying the Apple Tax.

Travel is no problem at all - no cell phones that support wireless charging today has dropped the charging/usb port, so you can always bring a tiny traditional charger if you want.

Samsung has wireless charging and apple fans say it's gimmicky. Now apple will have it and all of a sudden it's a must have feature.

I don't get it. Lol

Obviously far from the fastest charging phone. The wireless Samsung fast chargers goes from 0 to 100% in less than 2 hours. This is of course slow compared to wired fast charging which does the same in less than an hour, but not far from the time you spend charging an iPhone with the regular wired charger today.

But what if I need to use the phone when it charges? Since you don't have to plug it in to charge it, your phone will likely not reach 5% as often - resulting in a mad rush to plug it in before it is too late. Remember it charges every time you plop it down on your desk without any fiddling to plug it in.

The Lightning cable is the one that comes with your iPhone. They cost anywhere from $6 to $20 something, depending where you get them at. You might want to reread my post, I think you misunderstood what I said.
Went right by you, didn't it? ;)

It is the bigger screen/higher resolution/NFC/whatever syndrome once again. Just wait, it will be praised like the second coming when it arrives and doesn't offer more than what others have for years.

Another guy with this magical lightening cable, you say Apple Stores carry these?? Is it a USA only thing? Does the iPhone actually float in the air when connected? I mean it is pretty light already...
