I can understand the new charge of $30. All the other 3g smartphone cost that much too.

But $45 to be able to connect to an excange server to get work email? Now THAT is a rip off. My buddy pays $30 a month with his windows mobile phone on att and he gets exchange connectivity for free. There should be no upcharge for this!

I totally agree with you!! But how does at&t know you are using exchange? So let me get this straight apple is adding exchange into the firmware and all that jazz but at&t is saying well if u use it u gotta pay!?!? WTF ! Unlimited data is unlimited data regardless if u connect I exchange or not..WTF gives??

AT&T makes plenty of money off data plans and they have plenty of fn bandwith to support these phones so f them...what about 2g ownerrs that want to connect to exchange??? They have to change data plans?!? Stupid and very decieving!!! Stupid telecom companies!!!

IRU/CRU are account designations for corporate discounts.

IRU: Individual responsibility
CRU: Corporate Responsibility

FAN: Foundation account number

If you have a FAN attached to the account and pay the bill yourself you have a IRU account. If your company pays for your phone you have a CRU account.

One more Q: is the SMS usually covered under the IRU? Seems that, according to the leaked memo, that voice and data are covered for the iPhone 3G, but SMS isn't mentioned. I am just not sure if SMS falls under voice, data or other.

Thanks again!

Messaging is an add-on feature, and not included in the data plan. Plans start at 200 msgs for $5 a month.

Also, I don't know about anyone else, but we qualify for 3 different FAN numbers, and none offer discounts on the data plans. Voice only.

Related question...

If I want to sign up for a family (two person) plan using a corporate discount (my university), I see that it is $12 less per month ($58, I think). But since they don't have the iPhone on the AT&T website, I can't tell what the data charges would be. Since just one phone would be an iPhone (the other just a regular phone), would it be $30, or <$30, or would it be $45 because this is now a "business" purchase (thereby negating the voice discount)?

Old iPhone 16Gb price?

How much does the old iPhone 16GB cost now? I have one I purchased less than a month for $500. If less than 5, I'd like to at least get the difference. I am planning on getting the 3G one when it comes out.
Thanks.

I went to AT&T today to find out about this. I currently have $29.99 data and $4.99 SMS for my Blackberry. The rep said that FAN discounts don't apply to features less than $30. He did say that they could combine the SMS and data into a $35 package, thus getting the discount. He merged the two (it now shows on my rate plan page). I'll have to wait another billing cycle to see if he was right.

... The problem is that AT&T is not being forthcoming with pricing details for those of us who are not eligible. Steve Jobs made a big deal out of stressing the low prices of the new devices - steering clear of any subsidy implications. AT&T should just tell us what the "full" price of the iPhone is if we are not eligible for an upgrade yet - that information is readily available for any other smartphone. ...

I totally agree with you on that. The keynote was pretty misleading. Saying that the phone is $199 makes it sound like it's $199 for everyone. There was no mention of the subsidy, no small print on the slide and no * after the price either.

The price for customers not eligible for upgrade should have been available immediately. And really, the price should not exceed $199 + the full ETF. Otherwise, people would be better off canceling their current contract and starting a new one.

From my experience several years ago, cancelling your contract doesnt allow you to get the discounts given to new customers. They (cingular) told me I would be on file as a customer for 2 years.

I don't have any experience with this personally so I'm not arguing what you said. If that's the case and even though you pay the ETF you can't get another subsidized phone, that really sucks and I would be pretty upset too.

Did you read the post at all? 2G iPhone users are eligible for the 3G iPhone at announced prices, but start a new 2-year contract.

I agree with poster above--that does make sense since there was no subsidy the first time around, so giving the subsidy now is "fair". But if it doesn't apply to people who got a "regular" phone with a subsidy in the last year (or whatever the upgrade period is), there are going to be a bunch p.o'd customers.

I think it wouldn't be a good move of AT&T not to allow current customers using a different phone to upgrade to the iPhone at $199. Being that the 3G is new, most of their customers must have Edge phones. They will profit from their high fees if they allow everyone to upgrade to the phone.

An iphone without a data plan is a great phone with PDA abilities, ipod, and wifi surfing. I personally have no need for data and I don't text (I know, living in the stone ages) so I wish they would relent and let people who do not need data buy the phone without it.

:)
me too

As far as billing is concerned SMS is regarded as data so an add on SMS plan would be discounted if you have a FAN.

So...say I upgrade and have to start a new 2 year contract.

I know this prly won't happen, but say the iPhone comes out next year on Verizon...how much would it cost to cancel the AT+T contract after one year of a two year contract.

I would love to have FAN back:)

I would buy two more for my kids as replacements for their iPods and Cell phones - but I am not going to pay $30/month each for data...
