Is it possible to avoid triggering the upgrade or SIM transfer as stated in scenario 1.2.1?

I have trade in promo monthly credit from Verizon From last year that I will stop getting if an upgrade is triggered. Are you saying the carrier verification step not only verifies you are the original buyer but will also trigger the SIM transfer to the preloaded SIM card?

That's the point of it.. Go try to buy another phone. When it pops up the account verification screen it says something to the effect of, "your new phone will work as soon as you get it!" -- that happens because when you verify your account on the new Apple.com sent phone, your carrier helpfully transfers your # to the new SIM card.

For 99.9% of people, this is exactly what they'd want to have happen....

Great guide, thanks!
Question to be sure - I needed an unlocked phone and was hoping to get the T-Mobile one, but the Verizon store came up first. So I did a new account and bought from them.
I also ended up with a T-Mobile one (just in case there were problems with the Verizon one). Since I don’t need the CDMA/GSM version, I figured I would sell the Verizon one.

So, bought from Verizon at full price on new contract. Will I need to open it and activate it first? I plan on cancelling the plan within 14 days to not pay any ETF. I only need to be sure on this since I am currently out of town and my family will be taking are of this for me.
Thanks!

I'm not with any of the big 4 carriers. I use cricket wireless, which iphone x do i buy

So purchasing from Best Buy Verizon iphone X, and did not do any account verification (yes i paid the extra $100 when it was available last week), if i need to resell, it's fine? Nothing to do?

Can someone please verify what actions to take when you paid in full retail from Best Buy. Have seen a couple of other people asking this question with no answers.

I bought full retail Verizon for in store pick up at best buy

Best Buy phones are covered by the US Flex Policy. It will lock to whatever SIM you first put in it. So, if you're selling it as unlocked, I'd highly recommend you activate the phone with a VERIZON SIM before selling it to keep it unlocked. If it's turned on with a T-Mobile or AT&T SIM, it'll lock to that carrier.

Do you know of a way to avoid that to happen?

When I got my Iphone X from ATT tomorrow (paid full), I will take the sim card out and put a T-mobile sim card in to see if it can be activated

Guys what is the precedure if I purchased my iPhone from Best Buy ?? It’s an at&t model.

Hey WolfSnap, let me ask you about my situation...

I have an AT&T phone coming from Apple in which I bought it as "replace this iPhone" on my iPhone 6. I also have a Verizon model paid full-price from Best Buy that I was going to unlock with a Verizon SIM. I'd like to sell the AT&T phone and then use the Best Buy phone, but on my AT&T account.

So what's my order of operations? Is it...

1. Activate AT&T phone
2. Remove SIM
3. Activate Best Buy phone with my fiance's Verizon SIM
4. Put AT&T SIM into Best Buy phone
5. Sell AT&T phone

Also:

a.) When activating the Verizon phone with a Verizon SIM, does it add the phone to a verizon account?

b.) Do I have to re-activate again when putting my AT&T SIM into the Best Buy phone? Does this mean two activation fees?

Thanks for your help!

Ok, I keep seeing this over and over in the threads, and I keep seeing WRONG info being spread around. So, allow me to present my:

100% accurate, 100% complete, no nonsense guide to selling an iPhone you bought to sell.

This isn't a debate about whether you SHOULD be selling the phones, this is just information that will INEVITABLY help the buyer of your phone.
  1. If you bought your phone from Apple.com and had it SHIPPED to you, AND you paid full price:
    1. If the phone is T-Mobile, there's nothing special to do. Print a copy of the original invoice for the buyer so they can prove ownership, and sell the phone.
    2. If the phone is Verizon, Sprint or AT&T: **STOP** You can NOT sell it without first opening the box and turning on the phone, and completing the initial verification. Apple official support document https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203304 explaining the reasons...
      1. Also, once you complete the verification, the *now active SIM on your account* is the one in the new phone. Don't bother removing it first, it won't matter. The phone was sold as a replacement device on your account, and the carrier WILL swap the active SIM to the sim in the phone when it shipped. So, remove that SIM *AFTER* you've gone through the initial activation screen. Don't log into your iCloud account, etc, just skip all setup questions, then, go to Settings, General, Reset, Erase all Content and Settings. Once you've done that, turn the phone off, remove the SIM, package the phone back up, and sell it. Include a copy of the original invoice with the phone.
  2. If you bought your phone AT an Apple retail store, AND you paid full price:
    1. Sell the phone. Include a copy of the invoice with the phone.
  3. If you bought the phone from a Carrier store that ISN'T Verizon:
    1. You must first unlock the phone with your carrier.
    2. Then, sell the phone with a copy of the invoice.
  4. If you bought the phone FROM VERIZON:
    1. The phone is already unlocked. Sell it with a copy of the invoice.
  5. Bought the phone ANYWHERE ELSE?
    1. The phone follows the activation profile of how it was originally turned on. Ensure you FIRST install a Verizon SIM into the device, then power it on and activate it. Reset the phone after, and remove the Verizon SIM.
    2. If you boot the phone with an AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or any other SIM, the phone WILL BE locked to that carrier. Unlock it first, then sell.
    3. Include a copy of the invoice with the phone.
I hope this helps.. This is from YEARS of experience, and carefully studying what happens when you buy iPhones in a variety of ways. This IS accurate, and failure to follow the directions WILL result in VERY upset buyers.

Thanks for this. Wish I knew this before last week. :(

P.S. I don't plan on selling but I pre-ordered with a family member's Verizon account info from Apple.com. They live in a different city and I don't want to mess with their account.

Confirming what I need to do if I bought full price from apple.com selecting store pickup but used upgrade from brothers line (on same family plan with AT&T) but will want phone for my line. Just take my old sim and activate new Iphone X with my old sim in it and it then won't impact his old sim is that correct?

Would love some updates from people after picking up or getting delivery of their X's. I pre-ordered phones for my family from Apple (just in case), but it looks like I'll only be keeping one. Will probably return the other 2 if it turns out to be too much of a hassle to sell them.

I'm on Sprint and will definitely report back on the activation process once I get delivery later today.

Thanks for the thread. Great info!

Hard to tell right now. Some people claim lines are around the building at Apple Stores and not everyone is getting a phone...Other people say there is more than enough stock to go around. I am on the fence about selling/returning.

I think other people have touched upon this but hopefully I can get a clear answer:

After going through the 1.2.1 process for a Sprint iPhone, is the iPhone now unlocked for all carriers?

If you bought it from Apple and paid full, then the phone is unlocked.

Can anyone confirm whether a fully paid t-mobile phone shipped from Apple already comes gsm unlocked? Seems to be the case in the past although Apple never publicly disclosed this.
