Does step 1.2.1 also apply to phone order via Verizon and shipped to you?
Umm... Step 4 ;)

Can anyone confirm whether a fully paid t-mobile phone shipped from Apple already comes gsm unlocked? Seems to be the case in the past although Apple never publicly disclosed this.
ALL fully paid phones shipped from Apple come unlocked. It is 100% disclosed during the order process when you choose to pay in full. You can go through the buying process right now and try it. After picking paid in full, you'll see it says the phone is unlocked.

Doesn' make any sense if u ordered via apple directly for a Verizon phone u would have to go through all those verification steps but ordering via Verizon dont need to?

It's because if you buy from Verizon they charge you the $30 activation fee with the purchase. If you buy from Apple.com, it's added to the bill after you activate. So, they force you to activate to get your $30.

If I sell the Verizon bought iPhone x sealed, and when the buyer activates the phone with the sim card in the phone does that mean he'd be using my phone number?

I just did the in-store pickup at the Apple Store for my Verizon iPhone X, and had the salesperson activate the phone there without opening it. Then I went to Verizon's website and swapped the newly activated iPhone X back to the original phone for that line. So the unopened, but already activated phone, should be ready to sell without opening it, correct? There's nothing someone can do with the SIM that's in the phone?

He won't be able to activate it without your account info from my understanding.

It just depends on HOW it was purchased.

Order on apple.com and enter account details? You'll need to go through the verification step when you get it delivered.

Order on Verizon? Swap the SIM.

Buy full price after waiting in line? Nothing to do.

Bought mine on Apple.com as an AT&T replacement line. If I wanna sell it to a friend, I understand that I have to activate it first and then remove the SIM and give it to him. But, if I get charged the activation fee, how do I remove that?

I ordered on Apple.com. Picked up two in person and one showed up today. Paid in full on Verizon. At the store, they asked during checkout, "activate now or activate later?" I chose later because I knew I wouldn't be keeping them. I talked to Verizon on the way home and they suggested that they deactivate the SIMS in the two devices I had just picked up. They mentioned nothing about any account verification upon sale to anyone else. I will just put that disclaimer out there...I wont be shipping it anywhere, anyway. All in person.

You call AT&T?

Or, enter the “don’t charge me an activation fee, bro” code the appears on the back of your new iPhone on AT&T’s site....

So I ordered on apple.com and went to the apple store to pick it up. I guess it was activated when i left because my current phone became deactivated. I went to the att store and they gave me a new sim for my old phone which is now reactivated. Am I now good to sell the phone without opening it up because the phone was at one point activated and the sim that is in there is no longer good?

I'm not sure.. You may still have the verification screen to deal with. In fact, I believe you would still have that to do....

I'd probably power it on and double check. I don't know the outcome of *every* edge-case ;)

Coolio. Thanks again for all the help.

I just want to report that some info in the original post is not 100% correct.

I just received my Apple.com online order of a fully paid Verizon phone. I took out the preloaded sim from the phone before I turned on the phone. I put in my old Verizon sim to activate the phone (zip code and last 4 ssn). My line DID NOT transfer to the preloaded SIM card. It’s still working fine with the old SIM card.

Sold an AT&T iPhone X today. Followed the instructions and all went smoothly. I actually took the SIM from the X and put it into my iPhone 7+ and my phone number transferred back to me after going from 7+ to X. The buyer of X just went to AT&T store and got a brand new SIM and he was in business. Was pretty seamless but we had to do the activation part together (I let him open the phone)

Good point. However, you still completed the activation with the Verizon account tied to the Apple.com order. A lot of us were hoping to avoid that.

@WolfSnap what’s the best route to take here? The SIM that’s in the unopened device that I picked up at the Apple Store (ordered online for in-store pickup) is dead. Will it still go through the verification steps?

Are you guys giving the printed receipt when you sell? Blacking out personal information?

Yes. It will require the verification step. If it's ordered from Apple.com, and you needed to enter account info to buy the phone, you'll need to enter account info to verify the phone.

Thanks. Can I take the guy’s Cricket SIM and put it in before power up and it still go through the verification? I just chatted with Verizon and they said I can just give him the phone as the IMEI doesn’t even come up in their system.

Not sure why you’re arguing with me, and hoping for a loophole. The phone must complete verification. Period. The SIM has nothing to do with that.

Just turn the phone on, verify, erase it and remove the sim. It’s not difficult. Or, so it when you deliver the phone if doing it P2P. But, it must be done.

I’m not arguing with you, I’m just making sure there isn’t anything I’m missing. Thanks for the help.
