I have said since the first version of Apple Watch "Next one will be good enough", and I still haven't pulled the trigger. Maybe this one will finally convince me that it's worth getting one?
Same. This year better be good otherwise, 14 Day cancellation it is. 😂🤌🏻

They need to get the watch thinner…

If they did, I think it would open up to an entirely new market of users. Some people don’t want to wear a clunky gadget that protrudes significantly off of the wrist.

I think you should get your wife the new model and keep the 6 for yourself.

Hah! If she cared about technology at all sure... but she has had an apple watch 3 that she is more than content with and doesn't want a "new" or new one. So I don't think she will mind.

Not a fan of the squared edges at all. I love my Series 6 so looks like I'll be keeping that as long as possible.

Absolutely loathe the flat edge design.

On the plus side I just saved about 500 euro, thanks Tim Apple!

It's laughable because it's so predictable - every upcoming new model discussion brings out the round-watch folks.

News flash - circuit boards do NOT need to be square. Circuit boards (of varying shapes) have been used in round(ed) watches since the earliest LED watch in 1972.

Various smart watches with round cases have been on the market for years - look at the Garmin product lines.

The design decision is not a technical limitation.
So why won’t Apple do a round watch then?

Not sure about the look in those renders, but we've had Apple products look "meh" on renders before and when marketing material hit I ended up loving the design (well, still not loving the notch on iPhones, but gotten used to it).

The upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 will feature flat edges, a larger display thanks to smaller bezels, and a more prominent speaker, according to new CAD renders, allegedly obtained from industry sources, shared today by 91mobiles.

The renders reveal an updated Apple Watch design that takes inspiration from the flat-edges of the iPhone 12, iPad Pro, iPad Air, and the upcoming 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros. From the renders, we can see that the rear of the Apple Watch will consist of the same configuration of health sensors as the current Series 6.

The renders reveal no significant design changes to the Digital Crown or side button; however, they show two speakers that extend the entire side of the Apple Watch compared to the current adjacent speaker design. According to dimensions shared, the Apple Watch Series 7 will be offered in the same 40 and 44mm case sizes as expected.

While the bezels on the upcoming watch are expected to be thinner, which would allow for a larger display, the flat edges also allow the surface area to be larger. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has noted that Apple is testing a new screen lamination process for the Series 7 which will bring the display closer to the cover glass.

According to the report, the 44mm model of the Series 6 will sport a 1.8-inch display compared to the current 1.73 display in the Apple Watch Series 6. While no dimensions for the smaller 40mm model are shared, a similar proportional increase in display size can be expected. The Series 7 will also be 1.7mm thinner compared to the Series 6, according to the report.

Apple leaker Jon Prosser reported on an updated design for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 earlier this year, and 91mobiles' renders are mostly in line with Prosser's reporting. Reliable Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has also stated the upcoming Apple Watch model can be expected to feature design changes.

Since the introduction of the first Apple Watch, Apple has maintained the compatibility of older Apple Watch bands with all Apple Watch series. This has allowed customers to upgrade their existing Apple Watch without purchasing new bands compatible with the newer model.

While not mentioned directly in the report, today's renders make it appear as though that despite the flat-edges of the upcoming Apple Watch, the Series 7 should maintain compatibility with older Apple Watch bands. The Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to be announced alongside the iPhone 13 at a digital Apple Event in September.

Something does not quite add up. The watch will be thinner, but there will be no “significant” design changes to the Digital Crown. On my 44mm AW6, the crown is slightly less than the width of the watch. It will be interesting to see how the unchanged Digital Crown appears on the new design.

You'll need to ask Apple.

If I were to speculate, I'd say they've probably done a bit of research via focus groups and found that they're gaining more customers/revenue by continuing with the rectangular display / case than they're losing by not switching to a round case and/or releasing a round case variant.

What are you talking about? The Apple Watch is no thicker than most all mens watches. If it is, it's negligible at best. Anyone that wants an Apple Watch, already has it. Thin, thick, whatever. It's not going to stop them.

Obviously I'll have to reserve a final judgment for when I see the real thing, but as of now I strongly dislike it. Looks like a mini iPhone 4 rather than a stylish watch designed to look good on a person's wrist.

Because a round watch body loses the space where the corners currently are that can be used right now for widgets and other informational displays. And unless the watch is made thicker you also lose physical battery area so your watch has to be recharged more frequently. Smaller battery means shorter run time.

Tread carefully...

I've owned a number of Garmin smart watches over the years - 610, 910xt, 235, Fenix5.

Maybe something's drastically changed but ... their "color displays" were absolute cr@p, the smart-watch features were largely unidirectional (phone -> watch) without a return channel on iOS for responding to messages and such, and they were bad for software being quite buggy for the first few months after a new model release.

They were all good running watches and activity counters - but much of what gave them multi-day battery life also resulted in a substantially lesser user-experience than is provided by the Apple Watch.
you're not wrong. It's not a great smart watch compared to iOS + Apple Watch. The thing is I kinda like it that way.

I've had a 935 and 945 now + 3 AW's. Activity tracking and metrics on Garmin are great. I get a lot of value out of Garmin Connect. Battery = awesome; still 2 weeks of juice on a 2yr old battery. I can record any activity I want and never have to think about it.

Smartwatch functions on the Garmin aren't worth bothering. I dont do Spotify or Amazon Music, I am a One+ subscriber and want to use Apple Music and Podcasts. Not going to use Garmin Pay. You can't two way message. No calls on the wrist, etc.

But again, I kinda like it that way. The Garmin just sits there, nice and quiet until I'm ready to use it.

I really want Apple to get to a 3-4 day battery and then maybe I'll get off the fence once and for all.

Wait, what?

Anyway, as long as it will be compatible with existing bands, Apple could likely make this look like a gilded turd and they’d still sell a ton of them.

There is a bump on the back of the watch that does not sit flush with the arm. It is uncomfortable and thick.

I don’t think the watch had wide mainstream appeal until it’s thinner and sits flush against the wrist.

Yep, Garmin is good on the sports/fitness side - especially for folks serious about their running or cycling (and likely other stuff).

As I've "graduated" into the grand-master category my running and cycling is pretty casual these days and I find the AW suits my needs well enough. As you've been buying 9xx series Garmin's you're likely looking for a bunch more data than Apple's included software provides. AW battery life has been fine for me; charger on my nightstand and I don't do sleep monitoring, but that's not necessarily the case for everyone of course.

Side note w.r.t. Garmin Connect in case you weren't aware - the RunGap app on iOS will upload AW activities to Garmin Connect (and other sites). It's not perfect - running cadence comes out weird - but other metrics come through pretty well.

Battery life and sensors on the Garmin are great. As a watch though the Fenix is a horrible. When ever I did any sports I would inadvertently bump a bunch of button and then have to figure out which buttons to press to get back to the clock/timer.

Current Apple watch design is fantastic except for battery life. I do not like the new design but it doesn't seem that they have much in the works for new sensors and they have to sell new watches.

Weird. I thought I would like the sharper look, but based on the renders I don’t. Curious how it looks and feels on my wrist in real life.
Remember that this is not an Apple render. this is just someone taking leaked information and doing a basic render. Of course it will not look quite right. The actual watch will look much better.

The Apple Watch is the most sold watch (not just smart watch) in the world, by far. How much more „mainstream“ do you expect it to be?

Would rather prefer sticking to current size and form, if we could get added battery time, but knowing Apple - that'll be a future feature instead.

Looks ugly.
and reminds me of those cheap Chinese knock offs or old versions of Fitbit etc..
with the new direction Apple design team heading,I wouldn't be surprised..first those truly ugly new iMacs and now this..

Current Apple Watch design is stale and dated.

Very mid 2010’s design.

A “wrist-wart” of sorts.
stale and dated yes but this is a downgrade and worse.
they don't have to make something uglier just for the sake of a redesign.
if they can't come up with a better design, they should leave it.
they did the same with new iMacs.
