Remember the iPhone X wasn’t the iPhone ex, or the XS wasn’t the “ex-es”, just like OS X wasn’t OS-ex. They were, respectively, the iPhone “ten”, iPhone “ten-es”, and OS “ten”.

This isn't quite correct in the case of the iPhone. X was for the tenth anniversary, not for the 10th iteration. It was technically the 11th and there was no iPhone 9/9s.

But I do agree it would be weird to have a 10 this year and an X the next, just not entirely unprecedented as next year is the de facto 10th anniversary of release. Yes, this year is the 10th anniversary of the announcement, which means Apple could go either way from a marketing perspective.

I sorta doubt they will have a bigger redesign next year if they're doing a significant screen bump this year with the same design language though, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

So?

People who want the latest and greatest can buy the latest and greatest.
People who purchase a product and hold it can purchase the latest product with newest updates and hold it.

The only people who seem to lose out here are the people who are obsessed with buying the newest gear no matter what. That's a problem of their own, it's not reasonable to expect Apple to hold their hand and say "No, this product isn't for you".

No, everyone loses when the “latest and greatest” is a phone whose only innovation is to replace round edges with flat edges. Or a watch with a very slightly larger display.

no one wears an apple watch anymore except for workouts. lean into the workouts. make the normal watch like the pro with longer battery, more rugged design etc.
I see tons of Apple Watches every day around and in the office.

Looks more like this,

I know it was for the anniversary, they skipped the iPhone ”nine” and went straight with the “ten”. However, what I wanted to point with my comment, is that the X was for “ten” and not for just a letter (“ex”). If Apple releases a series 10 (“ten”), it would make sense to release an Apple Watch X (“ten” as well), it should be followed by a Series 11.

Agree, next year is actually the tenth anniversary of the launch. We’ll see what they do, but I think the most important thing isn’t the name, but rather a better design, and powerful features such as sleep apnea detection and blood pressure monitoring.

Man I'm glad you posted this. I'm on a series 6 and mulling over whether to upgrade this year or replace my battery as its at 80% and strugglign with my workouts and active days. I just don't know about the size of the ultra, but I need that battery life, hopefully they can reduce the bezels and keep the screen size and I think I'll get it.
I will say that mine was at 78% and doing the $99 battery service was absolutely worth it. On rest days, I get sometimes get about 30-ish hours. And if I used low-power mode then I think I could get 2 full days.

Looks at Apple Watch, notoriously devoid of bezels, curves, tapers, and other design elements.

“Real watch” people are a bit fussy aren’t they?

Imagine walking into room full of people playing Warhammer and saying "oh you guys are playing Lord of the Rings?"

That is the reaction that "real watch" people have whenever someone says they have an apple watch.

Why does everyone lose?
because they’re spending a ton of money every year without getting new technology and only getting aesthetic changes. They’re getting ripped off.

You’re assuming that everyone already has the previous generation and is upgrading to get the newest model.

Sure; those people do lose, that’s a valid argument. But that’s not everyone. That’s only a small subset who don’t have self control or reasoning.

The sensible thing to do is make purchases based on informed decisions. Those people don’t lose.

Surely the constant striving to make displays bigger and bigger only applies to phones, iPads, desktops, and macbooks...

A watch cant just keep growing theres only so big a screen can be before it looks ridiculous and would be too big for most people's wrists.
The Ultra is seen as 'very big' and not everyone can pull it off - but to go bigger still?
I would prefer something along the lines of an iPhone 16 pro mini and a bigger watch. Right now I feel like my 15 pro in blue is a spiritual successor to my beloved blue 12 mini, and the ultra 2 is an ok size, but could be a little bigger.

Don’t care about the rest of the specs (I’m assuming in Canada the SP02 will remain unless/until Health Canada states otherwise); if it does have blood pressure monitoring I’m in and then I can start the statistical comparisons with the 20-30 bp measurements I typically get in a haemodialysis session.

Agh, I’m not fooling myself; I’d already be sold on a/the bigger screen. Of course I expect the watch/Apple Health to be able to be told my hypertension is well managed, under control and that certain bp’s are not justification to send me notifications about pre-hypertension. I’ll be using thos feature for comparison and spot analysis.

Tom

When I can start doing stats between my watch and this; being able to create regression curves, etc thatwill make me happy.

If people have the income to upgrade every year, they are getting ripped off? Aren’t they making the decision? Who is forced to spend a “ton of money” to buy a new Apple product every year?

They’re fooled into buying what they think comes with new tech, which in reality doesn’t. Yes, they’re making the decision, but they are being misinformed.

If the blood pressure monitor is in anyway good this thing will be an insta buy for millions of people. Existing watches with light based bp measurement are garbage and the ones with a built in cuff are not practical and garbage.

I am still holding on to my apple watch 4 ... every year I wait for a big design change to upgrade mine and every year I get disappointed .. let’s hope Apple Watch 10 is different !!!

I know many are against it, but I still would love a round option. The samsung and pixel watches look so nice with a round face instead of the square. If nothing else, keep a square option and also make a round option.
