‘Apple hasnt been perfect’.

Ok, but maybe just my recollection but I cant recall ANYTHING you criticized apple for. But tbh, wouldnt bother to go through your posts to check, so maybe you were slightly displeased with one or two things in the past.

You’re basically saying that apple is the leader and innovator in everything they...
There is a different philosophy between Apple and Samsung. Apple may not be perfect but their moves are planned and considered. Samsung pushes hardware, that’s what they do. Sometimes they hit and sometimes they miss, just like Apple.

I really like the idea, although I would hope apple would execute it better (and thinner!). Fold it so its smaller in the pocket, better protected device and screen when closed and in pocket/bag etc, more drop protection...

seems like a pretty damn good idea to me

This is so naive. Meanwhile at Samsung, they're selling you the prototypes for devices they haven't figured out how to make yet. And you're busy hating the company that sells working products...

Exactly.

Razr and Samsung just went for the "they're the first companies with foldables; sooo innovative"

Jesus, those devices SUCK. Apple has had foldables patents for YEARS. And as always, when the concept execution can match a -good added value customer experience- Apple will launch it, be the best, sell the most, and expect every other company to copy it right aftwerwards.

Razr and this clamshell from Samsung are just STUPID. An even smaller body is not needed!. Are we having trouble putting them inside our pockets? NO. Who wants to add one step (open the clamshell) just to get to the exact same slate phone we know today when it's opened?

The other big Samsung fold (already released one) makes more sense, a change to a bigger screen adds value. Execution is THE WORST though. That's the niche I'm sure Apple will get into as soon as the execution makes sense. They've always cared about being the best, not the first.

Exactly like yours.
But my money counts for them... And I’m not going to spend a dime on this joke.
As I wouldn’t either. Far to entrenched in the Apple ecosystem. But a “joke”. At least some companies are pushing the boundaries of what possible with today tech. Apple far prefers to play it safe. There nothing wrong with that but not a lot of innovation lately.

Watch is 5 years old now. AirPods are old news too. APP isn’t really that exciting. Nothing wrong with them iPhone hasn’t changed form factor is since the 6

2. Small Foldables like the Motorola Razr are meant to be regular, large format phone that don’t feel huge in people’s pockets. Can you honestly not remember the last time your phone irritated you while seated? At all?

Totally disagree with this #2 and is the exact reason why I react. Your point #1 with big foldables its true. And Apple will be the first well executed foldable in that regard, and everyone will copy it and critizice they weren't the first. As always, they wait for the right time in terms of added value and customer experience. As it should be (say hi to samsung fold right now). Apple has never cared about being the first, only the best; they have had foldable's patents for YEARS.

But your #2, oh no.

Those 2 clamshell models (razr and samsung's) are STUPID. They don't get smaller, they get shorter BUT WIDER. They'll feel even worse on your pocket since they are chunkier.

No body is complaining or needing a smaller phone for their pockets right now. Noone is having trouble putting a smartphone on their pocket. Maybe to reach the opened screen (iPhone 5SE) but that's a whole other preference and you don't have to make it foldable to achieve that need.

Clamshell foldables just add one stupid step (opening the clam) before you get to the exact same spot we are right now; a normal slate phone.

No added value. Worse customer experience (opening it for any relevant action).

For those to be valuable they'd need to be even thinner than slate phones WHEN they're closed. And be indifferent in functionality when they're closed vs open clam. Again, the pocket will be chunkier.

Apple likely assumes that the display provided by the Apple AR glasses will make, for most people, the need for foldable or even larger displays obsolete very soon.

Honestly, a vertical folding phone (the one being discussed) appeals to me far and away more than the stupid Samsung Fold device does.

Im not sold on it, but this is a much better approach in my eyes.

Nothing says "I'm peak mouthbreathing fedora-wearing android trash" like a nice fat crease going down the middle of your gimmick phone's folding screen

I dont understand why this is so great. If you haven't thought about it it makes the phone twice as thick folded. I would rather have a thin and long phone in my pocket that doesn't make my pocket bulge out. I dont understand why this folded form factor is great? The same with the RAZR. It's actually pointless and more annoying to use having to unfold it every time.

The only good thing to come out of this is improving the folding technology. We would all love an iPhone Pro Max that unfolds into an iPad mini! If they can keep the thickness down while folded that would be pretty cool.

Thank you! I agree... and checking my phone probably hundreds of times throughout the day/work/personal/etc... I don't want to add another step of unfolding to reply or use full screen features.

I wonder how much of the design itself truly benefit us as the every day smartphone user.
Looks like Samsung only made this phone to see how many people would buy a phone just for its look. Just like the curved screen.

They realized moto had the better idea for an foldable phone
Current smartphone tech unfolded
Past pocket friendly folded

Well, this is a good example of how one idea leads to another. So many people bashed Samsung for the Fold form factor, but it was likely just their starting point / breaking ground for the tech. It allowed for the research and development to continue, eventually arriving at a device form factor that is widely accepted.

Looking at Apple, Steve Jobs wanted a tablet first, but eventually launched a phone first. I suspect the multi-touch screen tech that they needed was not available at the larger sizes at that early stage.
