Microsoft Surface Duo in my opinion is an idiotic device, at least if you consider it to be used like a smartphone.
[automerge]1576759825[/automerge]

Nothing wrong here.
Samsung keep changing their mind on almost everything is a matter of fact.

Most of the time the its not the device that are idiotic but we who don't understand whats in front of us or we who refuses to recognize the value of whats in front of us because of our personal biases :)

Well Microsoft did not label it as a smartphone or a not even a tablet. Basically what they are trying to convey is yes it runs on Android and it can make call and take pictures but its not a smartphone but a productivity device in which one of its function is to let you communicate with the world. I even like the idea that they did not talk about innovation during the presentation of the device but simply said - industry pushing technology and technology pushing possibilities... if you have the time try watching this clip :)

But the reality is, the folding phones will be irrelevant until Apple comes out with one.

I am not sure Apple will even bother releasing a folding phone.

Ultimately, I am not convinced that a folding phone offers a better user experience overall. You have to unfold it every time you take it out to use it, which I imagine would get annoying very fast. And then fold it again when you want to put it away.

Personally, I feel that Apple’s energies are better spent on wearables, which I feel hold much promise as a post-mobile device.

Communicate and making calls without being a smartphone.
yes, indeed.
Typically Microsoft: making something without even know what it really is.

This whole folding thing is a desperate attempt to find something new and exciting for the hell of it, isn’t it? who asked for this really
People who don't have baggy pockets for the humongous phablets phones have turned into?

And you're busy hating the company that sells working products...
You mean working like the butterfly mechanism keyboards? 😜

Some laptop can communicate and make calls :)
I have a keypad phone in my table right now and its not considered a smartphone but yes it can make calls :)
tablets are not smartphones but most of them can communicate and make calls
some watches can even make calls :)
you limit your imagination to smartphone for devices that lets you communicate with others :)

why does anyone want a phone that is twice as thick that you have to unfold before you use it?

i mean, good for them for trying something new, but this doesn't seem better in any way.

Without knowing the dimensions, this looks like a very, very tall phone. Too tall to reach the top with one hand.

You know perfectly well they think about replacing a smartphone with those devices...
In the usual Microsoft way: designing things that want to do too many things without being focused on anything.

The idea behind is not so bad.
The realization is poor.

Just because Sammy or Motorola do something, it doesn’t mean that Apple should do it, too. Not everything they release turns out to be a good thing. Are you thinking that Apple has never heard of or considered a folding phone?

The concept of folding these big smart phones in half to put in your pocket and make it fit better is....meh, at best. No one is really clamoring for this 'problem' to be solved.

So when you have to make a device that basically looks broken, because it almost is, in order to try to 'solve' this non-problem, you're really wasting your time.

Nothing about this looks futuristic or inevitable, it just looks like a solution in search of a problem. It's curved screen edge part 2. Something no one asked for, that no one needs, that adds no benefit....but it's different, so Samsung tries it anyway.

True and I agree with this.

There are the three "I"s. Improvement, invention and innovation. Are you saying Microsoft is at the first "I"?

But the reality is, the folding phones will be irrelevant until Apple comes out with one.
Probably true. After others try (but fail), it’s not unusual for Apple to come along and say, excuse me folks... step aside and let me show you how it’s done. And then make a $10 or 20 billion market out of it.

Nope. Would not want a folding phone.

Apple would be stupid not to be considering a folding model.

I suspect Apple has been seriously considering folding phones over the years and likely made and evaluated a few dozen lab prototypes. And came to the conclusion there's not a decent play going forward.

It's not something I'd want.

Never wanted foldable phone back then and certainly wont start here. I hope this trend dies as soon as it starts because foldables are not the way forward - at least not in this form.

DAMN! I would have never expected I'd think this was really cool.
You probably didn’t read the main reaction threads to “the Fold” last summer then. There had to be at least 10-15 posts that said something like, “why don’t they do it the other direction, like a flip phone”.

Nothing wrong with pushing boundaries. That's technology for you. Although it does feel like we're missing a step in that direction. I thought the next "step" in foldables would look like what Microsoft is doing with 2 screens. The mobile phone design indeed has plateaued and we're in a weird transition where people are trying to come up with the next big thing.

You forget. Apple tells you what you want. :p
But seriously, we don't know what's in their labs and there's nothing to suggest they've abandoned or will move forward with this.

This is the best approach to a folding smartphone I have seen. So pocket friendly and with an always on "outside" second screen. This is a product I would try.
