It's like you dont understand technology, at all. Yes, currently they are fat and chunky, which is quite reasonable considering this is a new tech and batteriy tech for mass market hasnt really progressed in the last couple of years. Wait some time and they will be thinner and lighter.

folds up into a compact palm-sized phone, making it small enough to easily fit into a pocket

I keep my phone in my front pocket. It’s more than long and wide enough for modern, tall smartphones. Depth is the limiting factor, and these folding phones seem to be twice as thick as a regular phone plus space for the folding mechanism. This would be less pocketable. It would be also harder to pull out and check discretely. Flip phones went away for a reason.

That phone isn't even that big so why fold it? As mentioned in other threads I think foldable monitors is the real use case for this tech. Something you don't need to fold and unfold 30 times a day but do fold when moving between desks or rooms.

Samsung throwing more crap against the wall to see if anything sticks. Exploring new concepts is fine but foisting them on actual customers to test them out is bad mojo. Ars Technica has a review of the Galaxy Fold that viciously excoriates both the phone and Samsung for dropping that turd on the public’s doorstep.

And Apple has done the same at times. The Mac cube comes to mind, along with the trash can Mac Pro.

It's novel and cool; still doesn't interest me however. Bring the overall device thickness down in a couple iterations, and we may see more adoption.

The Mac Cube was a successful product. It was quiet and small and stylish.

Apple's failure with the cylinder Mac Pro was more in execution and a lack of updates for 6 years that anything else. Had they offered more options and more frequent updates, it would be a very different machine.

That said, no tech is really a failure. As long as lessons are learned, then it was a success.

Apple pushes boundaries far more than the rest of the PC industry. Now Samsung is doing the same with phones.

Looks better than the Fold, but there still isn't much of a value proposition. I am not seeing a market for an expensive flip phone. This feels like another miss from Samsung. They need to rethink their strategy as Apple is really dominating them on every front.

  1. Everyone missing the point of this phone can't see how this is how tech evolves. It's not about an awkward, thick folding phone. It's about flexible display tech. Imagine a flip phone 5mm thick. That's where this is going.

Not unless someone invents an invisible battery or power source. Not to mention all the other components.

But even if it were super thin, it would not be as thin as the same phone without the fold. Since you can't do much of anything while the phone is folded, why would you ever want it folded? I'd rather have a 2.5mm thin phone unfolded permanently, since the depth is the part of my pocket that is the most limited.

My cargo pants have pockets big enough for a Mini 5 which has a bigger screen than this.

Cargo pants $45
iPad mini 5 wifi+cell $450/$529 (refurbished/new)

Samsung Galazy Z Flip $1,499 How do you put a tempered glass screen protector on this or an impact case?

I don’t see a point in this phone.

A "normal" sized phone that can be folded and put in your front pocket whilst at the same time allowing you to sit down without a) breaking / bending the phone and b) without acquiring a hernia

I don't see much point in it either other than I suppose being a bit more convenient to have in your pocket. Personally what I want is a phone that turns into a tablet, much more like their previous failed attempt. Or more specifically I want something that fits into my pocket and I don't have to carry in my hands but folds out into something the size of a tablet.

I'm fascinated by the "glass" screen though, is this truly bendable glass or is it just a marketing name for some type of plastic?
