This is why my kid prefers her kindle to paper books. Instant access.
There are other benefits to e-books over time paper books. They don’t require anywhere near as much space as physical book. You can carry an infinite number with you at any time. You can search them for terms much easier. You can organise highlights and notes more efficiently and they can be shared if needed in an easier way. The kindle also has a built in light which negates the need for a bed side light. You can adapt the font, line spacing and font size to suit your needs.

The Motorola Razr has a far better hinge and fold. This just looks horrid.
The Motorola phone is falling apart because the screen isn’t fully attached to the frame ...

In any case, I believe that Apple will first try with a foldable iPad and then, when it has mastered the technology will go with the iPhone.

Apple will not bother with this. Foldable devices make absolutely no sense in their application. They won't do it with the iPad and they won't do it with the iPhone.

Connecting the screen on a fold is just absolutely asinine.

At that point, just put 2 screens with a super small bezel/hinge because unless you're watching a movie or something seamless that gap isn't going to matter...& most likely it would be for productivity uses/apps.

Not sure who advises these companies but they need to fire these people for wasting all this R&D and time into these devices.

When I start my iPhone, it doesn't look so crampy.
Holding instead of folding.

The unfolding takes 5 seconds, what an embarrassing nonsense...
I let it ring for 10 seconds, did you again not get your butterfly out of your pants?

Pretty cool tech. I’d be interested in toying with this. It’s refreshing to see design language with phones that don’t look like the ‘norm’ of what we’re used to seeing.

Does Macrumors just want more clicks from Android fans or they genuinely believe this has something to do with Apple?
Sure they need clicks.
Apple Sold more Tablets than Samsung and Huawei Combined in Q4 2019 with Double Digit Growth for the Quarter and more
And top stories from other sites (patentlyapple) don't seem to get adopted... Does this chase away the eagerly clicking Androids?

It's nice seeing a big company like Samsung putting R&D into this. Once they refine it in a few years, I'm sure Apple will adopt this technology for the iPhone within the next 8 years like the OLED technology. This is pretty much the next evolution for phones, especially in 2020's. I remembered my first phone being the candy bar style Nokia and how they made it smaller throughout the years, but when flip phones came out, the Nokia phones started becoming outdated technology; and we know where Nokia is today.

On one hand I like the form factor as it's small but then I start thinking of having to flip this open all the time and that just doesn't seem convenient for doing everyday stuff I do like quickly answering a message or digging out your phone to pay at a store or showing your bus ticket.

I'm sure in a few iterations, they'll make the front screen bigger for small tasks like that. They already did it for the Motorola Razer 2020.

You sound so convencied that someone may think that you already tested all foldable devices there are, which is most likely not the case. I would rather wait to play with one first hand and then judge who must be fired and who not. All I see is great potential and some curious implementation options. That fact that you only see a gimick product is either because you are visonary or an ignorant. Time will tell.

I dunno. Everyone is quick to write off foldable phones. Because THIS model is thick and seemingly pointless this is but the start of a journey to possibilities where a foldable phone:
  • when folded is as thin as a smartphone is today
  • when folded has a usable, interactive screen on the outside for quick tasks
  • when open has no crease
  • when open has a very durable screen and is quite durable even though thin
  • in either mode has no issues with dust entry, etc.
  • has a durable, quiet hinge mechanism
  • has extremely long battery life
  • runs iOS (had to get that in there)
yada yada, because TECHNOLGY IMPROVES. I'm staying away from today's crop of folding phones like the plague but try staying away when it all comes together and their usefulness and portability are demonstrable.

My guess is he's visionary. 😄

I'm wondering what I'd rather have in my pocket. A short, thick phone or a tall, thin phone? I feel like I'd rather have a thinner phone. Then again, I'm sure the day a flip iPhone comes out, I'll be buying it day one. :)

So this is peak phone... when we run out of useful/convenient features to add, so we fall back on creating designs that cause an objectively worse user experience and hope that people buy it based on the gimmick factor alone. Great

Mark my words: unless the technology behind this DRAMATICALLY changes, this is something Apple will NEVER do. It IS a gimmick and a fad (like netbooks once were) that's gonna be all but dead in a few years. People will beg Apple to also make one such device... Apple will refuse. People will complain. But in the end Apple will have been right. Also, Apple hates all moving and/or mechanical parts...

Maybe I just have common sense? This stuff is gimmicky just like 3D & VR.

Has foldable tech come into play at home where it's much more practical? No. The closest we have is curved screens. The most likely application of curved is going to be on a wearable.

In the end, the phone is going to transition from a communications device to your video/photography device and/a consumption device while your wearable (watch/airpods) will become your communication device for voice/texting/etc.

Agreed 110%

For all of you haters who just don't get it, Samsung is all about innovation and i wish Apple had the proverbial balls to try this more often. Samsung is willing to put it's research dollars where it's mouth is and let the market decide if it's useful or not. Apple on the other hand, will decide for you (which includes deciding that a $1000 monitor stand is what you need). The iPhone form factor has essentially never changed in 11 years while Samsung and others will launch sliders, flips, physical keyboards, double screens and foldables in an attempt to deliver something better for you. You all should be thankful Samsung is around.

This is the future of all phones. Mark my words
Lol, so when people here ABSOLUTELY flipped s**t over FaceID & how it’s utter garbage, because they feel it is 1/20th of a second slower than TouchID- and moaning on and on about how terrible & difficult their lives had become because you also have to “swipe up to unlock”... all that group will be ok with the enormity of effort (/s) that comes with flipping a phone open??
I don’t get it. Are fractions of a second more important, or are gimmicky new useless form factors more important?
Oh well. I guess this will be pointless until Apple does a folding device and then it will be the second coming of Christ.
Hmmmm.... I dunno about all that. I think if Apple showed a 2”x9” phone, like this dumpster fire of a “concept”, little would become of it- other than everyone having a laugh.

I still don't want a folding phone. Adding more points of failure is not desirable to me.
I agree completely. Plus, a lot of people have gotten out of the habit of wearing a watch because they can just glance at their phone display. Forcing someone to open a folding phone to see the time or see who is calling is going would get old really quick.
