Exactly; the 17" model is a goner, and deservedly so. This is why some of the lineup seems shortened (actually meaning that there will be 13" and 15" MBPs only).

I can't wait for the death of the 17". It always seemed like an unnecessary option.

17" - not selling enough.

13" - might as well get a 13" MBA with higher resolution screen, faster drive, lighter

15" - Apple's only Pro laptop

It seems to me that all those rumors about MBP turning into new style of MBA was leading to a greater separation between the two. The consumer version will now undoubtedly be the MBA and the pro version will just have 2 base computers - a 15" & 17" - if you want a 13" then a MBA could prob handle what you are doing with it.

That seems like a very dubious strategy for Apple to go down.

The major disconnect is that the MBP 13" model is the most popular MBP model. Large numbers of people bought it instead of the MBA because it had more value. The only reason the MBA issn't dead last among the Mac models (including the Mac Pro) is because Apple peeled out the $999 price point for the MBA. [ The 11" model is where the bulk of its unit sales come from. Before the introduction of the 11" model the MBA was dead last on Apple's online store in Mac popularity line up. Same is true if narrow focus solely to the MBP sub-product models; the lowest price point is the bulk unit sales. ]

Apple will chase a substantive group away if kill off the MBP 13" and force people into the MBA's higher prices and substantively lower capabilities ( 100's of GB less storage space, much slower CPU, slower graphics , less RAM , etc. ). If weight is your primary selection criteria for a laptop the MBA 13" is reasonable selection. If it is computational abilities it is not.

They overlap in screen size, but that is precisely why Apple should tweak the computational differences between the MBP 13" higher (e.g., even more RAM, discrete GPU , etc. by making some design tradeoffs ). Not remove all the differences and drop offering. Minimally Apple would have to move the price points for the MBA 13" into the MBP 13" slots. That really doesn't bode well for there being a reasonable amount of RAM and SSD storage at those prices.

I think you right only in that the MBA line up may be renamed over time as the "Macbook". But there existed a MB 13" and MBP 13" (or their rough equivalents ) for quite a while.

Killing off the MBP 13" smells like someone in Apple is trying to force the MBA to be successful. Nuke the MB for MBA 11". Nuke the MBP 13" for the MBA 13". User demand is not making that happen.

MBPs won't be getting retina displays until those displays are capable of displaying a wider color gamut. Otherwise they wouldn't be "pro".

Hahahahaha

The guys at Apple are not scared of Tim Cook as they where of Steve... "We are going to double on security...". Yeah, Tim, sure...

Now that Steve is not here I bet there are going to be a LOT of leaks.

God it must be good to know so many people are eager to just fill Apple's coffins...

No disrespect or bad intentions. It's just that you've got to applaud Apple's strategy this past decade. It made quite a few people just "wanting" to buy.

Terrific, terrific strategy, marketing, effort, result.

Believe you meant coffers.

Marketing is important... And Apple sure knows how to do a launch... But to get the growth and loyalty, the products have to be good.

Right now where I work we sell about 20 to 25 13s a week 5 to 10 airs a month.

Most people dont want to pay the extra 400 dollars for half the hard space and to lose battery life and the ODD (Most students we sell to want that damn ODD)

For me personally I like the ability to add more ram and change the HDD to a SSD of my choice at will and take out my ODD and put a 1TB Media drive in my computer.

If they kill off the 13 it won't be the end of the world but I will be sad:(

Is it just me, or is the new administration looking like they are pro Mac? It is starting to look like a push for domination of the computer market.

I was thinking the same thing. iOS devices are great, and produce a tremendous amount of revenue for the company...but it (unscientifically) seems to me that Cook is more pro Mac than even Steve was. He was so focused on the mobile devices...but I'm not saying this was wrong...it's just as a Mac user more so than an iOS user I really enjoy seeing the new models come out and a continued investment into the pro market. I have a Mac Pro that I use for video and web development work, and while I'm not in the market for a new machine, new graphics options would be fantastic and would show that they still care.

I can't imagine that seeing as how well the 13" MBP sells. It outsells the MBA 11" and 13" models by itself.

Hmm, just wondering. If both the Air and the Pro were to get retina displays, would the Air be getting TN panels and the Pro be getting IPS panels? Similar to the difference in the retina display on the iPhone and iPod touch.

How is it any different with Steve and Tim Cook?

Both have/had the exact same power. Unless you're trying to suggest Tim doesn't have the ability to hire and fire lol?

Apple is killing hard drives and optical drives. They've telegraphed this for a while now and literally the only thing stopping them from SSD everywhere is the price difference.

You really never know about these leaks anyway. Some may be intentional for whatever reason.

Indeed. Tim Cook is ALL ABOUT lineup consolidation and streamlining of manufacturing/cost reduction. This is what is going to happen:

- Updated MBA 11";
- Merging of the MBA and the MBP 13" (under the MBP brand but NO optical drive);
- Updated MBP 15" (with ONLY the 15" having an optical drive);
- MBP 17" GONE for good;
- Updated iMacs 21" and 27" (same form factor);
- Updated Mac Pros also with the same form factor (unfortunately).

Major updated features:

- Ivy Bridge processors across the board;
- 802.11 ac support across the board;
- the usual RAM and storage increases;
- Retina display ONLY in the 11" MBA.

You lost my interest when you said this. No way will they do a range update bit part

As someone else has already said, this is not unprecedented. It didn't happen the last few upgrade cycles because the design was basically unchanged. If the list is real, and the only updated MBP is the 15', it can only mean one of two things: it's a brand new design and the 13' and 17' will follow later (fall?), or the 13' and 17' are disontinued. I think the former is much more probable.

2 months ago 1 AUD bought 1.10US
and our products still cost 20% more
that isn't taxes or duties, that is just "regional pricing"

Well, as far as i noticed, apple doesn't adjust its prices for currency fluctuations. Their products will cost the same, which was most apparent with the last year's Swiss franc hike. Switzerland went from a very attractive option to buy Apple's stuff in the past to one of the most expensive, when the franc gained on the EUR, USD and other currencies.

Plus, the prices in the US are without VAT, and without their sales tax. Australia has a VAT, as does the whole of Europe. Switzerland has only 8%, but still.
