And I'm wondering in what sneaky ways it'll make hardware run slower. I'm surprised so many people embrace the new free, yearly (and virtually compulsory) update regime when it's quite obvious that it serves no purpose other than to quickly degrade older hardware. Apple want us to change Macs as often as we change our phones.

virtually compulsory as in completely optional?

Why would I need control center on my Mac? I can enable/disable bluetooth and Wifi from the menu bar. Being able to control music from the control centre is not important to me, actually I never listen to music using my Mac. Never.

So what about the other people who do, should they be left wanting?

Looks like it's maybe designed for touch, with the way the panes slide out from the sides and the size and similarity of the controls to iOS.

Touch screen iMacs anyone?

I would rather hope for iPad Pro. That. Would. Be. Awesome (with a quality stylus). The only problem would be to run Intel-based Apps on Apple's chip... Maybe they could use something like Rosetta back in the days while App are getting ported.

This would become my new sketchbook. :)

I like this look, after the first weeks I got used to iOS7 and when I see iOS6 it seems very old and obsolete in both design and functionality.
I found iOS7 to be that wierd case when something ruined the impression on what came before it, but did not become a better version itself. iOS6 felt very warm, cosy and friendly. iOS7 made it look outdated but feels very cold, generic and, while more functional, still less usable in a lot of ways. It's a shame and I'd hate to see same happen to Mac. With this said, I do welcome improvements in functionality.

That floating Search panel looks almost identical with Alfred.app. I think adding this kind of functionality is a great idea but I hope they bought them rather than simply rip them off.

Well I sure hope for one thing that the Bluetooth works better. I think I could cold-start my '13 iMac and have my keyboard and trackpad responsive faster than waking it from sleep. Is it just me or am I the only one that has to wait 30-45 seconds just to put my password in or do anything for that matter?

sample old icons? I don't think so!

So the Notes app, Calendar.... etc still have the same icon design? I don't think so!
I call fake on these photos!

I found iOS7 to be that wierd case when something indeed ruined the impression on what came before it, but did not become a better version itself.
Like when democracy replaced monarchism. And when first person games replaced jump and runs. These are the saddest days in history. :(

John Ive: "so we took the existing Mac OS X Tiger and made it flat"

Do you have any actual prove of this?

Remember Steve Jobs' quote on the TV business - "Crap Turnover". Basically he, and by extension Apple, have nothing but contempt for the idea of buying a device and keeping it.

Otherwise it should be obvious to anyone. I've upgraded 6 or 7 Apple devices this year. The degradation in performance of each of them is nothing but suspicious. What does iOS7 do that iOS6 didn't? Nothing, yet an iPhone will run at half the speed. I have an old MBP, that used to run a bit slow, now is virtually useless with Mavericks, despite the fact I've gained nothing but Finder tabs and supposedly better memory management. Face it guys, they saw the 2 year upgrade cycle of phones, and wanted to apply it to more expensive hardware.

They're adding all kinds of pointless buttons that just wouldn't be justified in a minimalistic approach to UI design. Those buttons on the lower left in the new Control Center esque panel. What the hell are they for?

Also +1 on the Alfred.app thing. I've used and loved that app for years. Typical for Apple to copy it because it's just a well designed system, but still kind of a shame if they would go out of business.

Bring back Snow Leopard!

Was the last mac OS i liked (and the one i still use on my Mac Mini and Macbook Pro, my iMac i have kept "up to date" and mavericks, well, its the Window Vista of the Mac OS's IMO, and looking at it, the next release is going to be Mac OS version of Windows 8 :( )

I don't really understand the need for control center on OS X, that's what the top right menu bar is for. I suppose it could be interesting if a Apple opens it up for developers. iStat (Menu) could look cool there.

It looks like it will replace the Apple Menu. It has sleep/shut down and About this Mac...it would be symmetrical with NC but they need to rethink the placement of those buttons. On a non-touchpad Mac you'd have to click the Apple menu and then move the mouse all the way to the bottom of the screen.

True, but from the description, perhaps more elegant when using full screen apps

Do you have any actual prove of this?

OS X update has never effected positively older hardware.

Windows 7 brought back to life many old PCs with core2duo or even Pentium 4. It was optimized specifcally to allow older hardware to run the OS smoother and take advantage of OS accelaration. Even though OS X Mavericks still runs smooth on older hardware certain optimization in the new OS X would be welcome. I have never seen a single review of OS X on older hardware that clearly states that the computer runs faster with the new OS. Noramlly there is no clear boosts in speed and there is nothing better to see your old hardware run faster under newly released OS X.

virtually compulsory as in completely optional?

unless you want to run stuff you bought from the Mac App store which will no doubt be quickly upgraded to require the new version of the OS only

so optional only if your system is software static, only if you never patch existing software , or plan on buying new software.

Otherwise you will HAVE to upgrade as the rest of the software moves on (this happens on iOS all the time and i can see it rolling on to include Macappstore software as well, it only benefits apple forcing people to upgrade on slower systems make the old systems seem slower and slower until people buy new)

SO yes, Virtually Compulsory in the same way buying petrol for my car is Virtually Compulsory, i can choose not too, but it quickly becomes a paperweight if i don't.
