OS X update has never effected positively older hardware.

Windows 7 brought back to life many old PCs with core2duo or even Pentium 4. It was optimized specifcally to allow older hardware to run the OS smoother and take advantage of OS accelaration. Even though OS X Mavericks still runs smooth on older hardware certain optimization in the new OS X would be welcome. I have never seen a single review of OS X on older hardware that clearly states that the computer runs faster with the new OS. Noramlly there is no clear boosts in speed and there is nothing better to see your old hardware run faster under newly released OS X.

That hardware was made to run Windows XP. Windows Vista was a mistake and Windows 7 is not faster than XP on a Pentium 4.

Reminds me of Windows for some reason with a dock.

Hope this is not true or just really bad screens

I think Apple should ditch the dock altogether and just use Launchpad instead or at least make the dock optional. There are those like myself who hardly use the dock and personally I keep it hidden too for the extra screen real estate.

I have an old MBP, that used to run a bit slow, now is virtually useless with Mavericks, despite the fact I've gained nothing but Finder tabs and supposedly better memory management. Face it guys, they saw the 2 year upgrade cycle of phones, and wanted to apply it to more expensive hardware.
Weird, my old and rusty 2008 MBP works great in Mavericks, so does my 2010 iMac, never before have i kept my computers for so long because i don't feel the need to upgrade to a newer one.

+1 on the Alfred.app thing. I've used and loved that app for years. Typical for Apple to copy it because it's just a well designed system, but still kind of a shame if they would go out of business.

Alfred copied Quicksilver, so they're fair game as far as I'm concerned... plus Apple is never going to put as much functionality into Spotilight as Quicksilver or Alfred provide, so there's really no need to worry...

Remember Steve Jobs' quote on the TV business - "Crap Turnover". Basically he, and by extension Apple, have nothing but contempt for the idea of buying a device and keeping it.

Otherwise it should be obvious to anyone. I've upgraded 6 or 7 Apple devices this year. The degradation in performance of each of them is nothing but suspicious. What does iOS7 do that iOS6 didn't? Nothing, yet an iPhone will run at half the speed. I totally believe this. My iPhones used to slow down to the point where it was so frustrating, I was almost forced to upgrade (I remember when messages would take up to 30 seconds to open on my 3GS). But microchips don't slow down with age, so it was clearly each update that did it.

My 1st gen Apple TV has never been updated (except perhaps in the first few months) and it still works absolutely fine.

Thanks Mangomind!
Really wanted to see these. Looking forward to 10.10.

You are welcome!

It's also interesting that this is a March alpha of OS X 10.10. As a result, all the icons and parts of the user interface are placeholders for works in progress.

That's funny... And not surprising. People hate change.

How exactly does it look like Windows? Windows doesn't even have a dock... I swear some of you have the strangest complaints.

Windows 7 has a dock. Most people still use windows 7.

So you're telling me that all the Macs that were shipped with Lion weren't positively affected by ML and Mavericks? Interesting opinion you got there.

Actually there are a lot of people with even older machines who experienced that Mavericks ran better than Snow Leopard.

I had a 3GS and it never took 30secs to loads messages! Yes if you put it side by side with an iPhone 4 or above it will be slower in comparison, but that's down to increased RAM and a faster processor

iOS 7 on the iPhone 4 is another story, but it certainly wasn't unusably slow.

Mavericks runs much better on my early 2011 MBP that shipped with Lion.

Yeah, you are right but Windows 7 runs faster than Windows Vista and the first one is newer and superior that Vista so there was a clear optimization down the road. Im still waiting to see a newer OS X that can make the the first generation MBA run decently (try to watch youtube video in HD on this last one).

The older harware becomes slower and slower with every major new OS X just like the iPhone 4 feels so much slower with iOS 7 that it was with iOS 6. I think more work in software accelaration and optimization is the future while go into more power efficient low temperature CPUs.

Here's what Mark Gurman tweeted about these blurry photos:

Mark Gurman (@markgurman) tweeted at 1:14am - 2 Jun 14:

@jlgolson I'm saying I received them a few months ago with the sketchiest backstory I've ever heard. (https://twitter.com/markgurman/status/473346867476963329)

So Gurman had these a few months ago and 9to5Mac didn't post them. He also says he doesn't post anything anonymous or off Reddit. "Sketchiest backstory I've ever heard" makes me question the legitimacy of these photos. And even if there is a chance they are legit if they are from March surely things have changed since then. I highly doubt Apple was complete with OSX redesign in March. Heck, Gurman claimed last week that Apple was running behind on both 10.10 and iOS 8.

I'm just going to ignore the internet and wait for the keynote.

Will greatly appreciate a tech-wise review of some sort that proves your statment.

My observations and experiance show the opposite.

Excuse me Sir, but I have to ask... Do you actually own a Mac? ML is faster than Lion, Mavericks is faster than ML on the same hardware. I'm quite sure the majority of the Mac users can comfirm this.

So... 10.5 replaces 10.4's flat dock with the current 3D Dock, "Atrocity! Horrible! SO MUCH LIKE AERO. Give us back the flat dock!!!!!!! The 3Dness makes me dizzy!" commenters cry and use terminal tweaks to get the old look back. 10.9 disables the terminal hack and commenters again cry "Horrible, Apple, let us use the tweak again". Now that it is rumored Apple will bring the flat dock back, commenters cry again "Atrocity! Horrible! SO MUCH LIKE AERO. Give us back the 3D dock!!!!!!! The flatness makes me dizzy!"

Well, it's good to see that no matter how much the OS X changes, the local community stays the same...

Seems like :apple: are on the ball, the Keynote app is already on my Apple TV her in the UK :) it doesn't usually show up until about an hour or so before the keynote.

Yep, it's on ATV in the US too. :)

I really hope this is a very early beta. I mean, Apple added two sidebars, made windows white and flattened the Dock. Beyond that it's pretty much the same.

If that'd be the case, they wouldn't give free updates to older hardware. They wouldn't even give paid updates to older hardware. They would give no updates whatsoever and thereby forcing you to upgrade for new features. But they do the exact opposite of what they are accused here. Prolonging the life of hardware and thereby retroactively increasing its value to the customer.
I've upgraded 6 or 7 Apple devices this year.
With what? You're obviously not following the MacRumors Buyer's Guide. We only had a minor MacBook Air refresh this year so far. There was nothing to upgrade to.
The degradation in performance of each of them is nothing but suspicious. What does iOS7 do that iOS6 didn't? Nothing, yet an iPhone will run at half the speed.
Not every iPhone. Only those made very early in the smartphone revolution. These type of devices are still fairly new and increasing speed at an tremendous rate. An iPhone with an A6 or A7 chip will not make any performance difference between iOS 6 and 7. But older iPhones are very old in hardware years.

Must be a problem of some app you have running in the background, because no one else has problems with Mavericks on older MacBook Pros.
Face it guys, they saw the 2 year upgrade cycle of phones, and wanted to apply it to more expensive hardware.
If you think its all a scheme, than why do you upgrade and why don't you downgrade to what version you liked better?
