It would be nice to have a speaker on the upper side of iPad, and then iPad to auto-detect when you are watching a video content in the landscape mode. In addition, hopefully one day we will also get front-firing, rather than side-firing speakers.

I don't think this will ever happen unless they abandon the edge-to-edge glass, which I don't see happening any time soon.

...unless they figure out how to magically play sound through the glass or build it into a gap between the edge or something, but I'm just grasping at straws here.

Just for a thought, iPhone has a front speaker, albeit small but still has edge to edge glass :)

How good can speakers be on a tablet that is 1 inch thick anyway? I never use my iPad speaker. I have a Bose Soundlink mini. I just connect to that via Bluetooth.

It is a terrible design, no SD card slots, a nightmare to load with audio/video if you have 2 laptops, choose one, and make a mistake and the ipad data is deleted.

Mr Ive is slacking off, this is a stupid ipad. When are you going to see the problems Mr Ive?

Agreed. Also, change Lightning to micro USB, include USB 3. Front speakers are needed. I don't care if it might present usability problems with my hands covering the speakers, it just makes sense. Oh, and the Home button should be like Samsung's for smaller bezels.

Not very good, but better than any other portable device I've owned (which doesn't say much). I wouldn't recommend them.

It's never really necessary to upgrade to Ver 5 from Ver 4. Technology will always march forward, but consumers aren't normally expected to keep buying the latest and greatest.

Users from the iPad 2 or 3 are more likely to benefit from the current gen or next gen model.

Exactly.

I have 2 laptops, 1 is Apple, one is a Horrow Product, both have itunes, depends where I am, I download stuff off the interwebs, in mp4,

I use my ipad to watch when travelling, now some idiot at Apple says I have to spend time syncing my itunes library from one laptop to the next, then upload to my ipad, insane!!!

2 libraries, let me just plug and play, this concept has been around since Win 3.1!!!! Plug and play Apple, instead you create stupid handover for useless devices, at least if you are going to hobble the stupid ipad with only 1 itunes laptop, then at least let my use my SD card slot, of which both laptops have..

MR Ive is a m***on for designing the way he is!!

...this explains a lot.

The only way I can see this being feasible for you is to store your iTunes library on a dropbox (provided you have good internet on both ends).

Personally, I would stop using both laptops to sync it and use one of the two as a "master library", you will thank yourself in the long run.

The problem is with the ipad and the audio system, in the ipad old and the ipad new, this one we are discussing here.

The ipad is set up for audio to be played out when in portrait mode, that is with the speaker set at the "top" of the device. Apple made a design decision that leaves the audio when in landscape mode tending to be one-sided.

I watch movies and listen to the radio in landscape mode, as this is more convenient for me, as a result the audio is one sided, that is from the side vertically away from the microphone.

Why Apple could not put in 3 speakers, and have the device auto sense the orientation is a problem for me. We need to protest loudly about this oversight.

I echo the sentiments of those wanting speakers on both sides of the iPad. It just makes sense because who ever would watch anything in portrait? Add in the widescreen bars you get with most videos and the screen size is tiny in portrait. I hope they didn't make it smaller/thinner as well because I'm not a fan of having to rebuy cases and other things for every new iPad, assuming I get this and as an Air owner, I'm not sure it'll be a necessary upgrade.

As comedian Steven Wright says: (paraphrasing)

The other day I came home and everything in my apartment had been robbed and been replaced with an exact replica.

While I agree that speakers on both sides would be nice, it really sounds like you would benefit from buying a pair of headphones.

Thank you Harry Warden, I agree 200% with your words.

What is the cost of a small speaker for the ipad $15? For an extra $15, I would love my ipad to have stereo speakers in landscape mode for watching itune sourced content.

Why does Apple not supply as standard in the box, a set of $1 headphones???

Probably because they prefer to bundle their devices with sets of $29 headphones. ;)

But seriously, I wasn't aware that they didn't until you just mentioned it. I have so many pairs laying around it never occurred to me that it wasn't already in the box. I wonder if they assume you are going to use it in a dock or something...

There are certainly speakers you can buy for cheap, there may even be a handful of cases you can buy with speakers already built in (I know they exist, at least) probably not for ~$15 though.

Save up $199 and buy a Bose Soundlink mini. Sound is better than anything you'd ever get out of a mobile device that is 1 inch thick. The sound really is amazing even over Bluetooth.

Ok so now the cat is out of the bag! The design is more like iPhone 5/5s around the edge of screen. It makes sense. Definitely more aesthetic.

Lopsided audio again, count me out. the audio on the ipad mini is terrible.

How hard can it be to have audio from 2 sides of the ipad?? Too hard for that designer at Apple!!:mad::(

Indeed.

I've been asking for this since iPad1 Launch day.

Only to be told on these forums, I'm wrong, and should wear headphones if I want to have any reasonable sound.

Of course it can be done. Apple/Mr Ive, simply don't want to do it. that's all.

If Mr Jobs, said "I want stereo speakers" it would of had them since day one.

Probably so, but why carry yet another device around when the one device could do it if the makers wished it to ?

Someone needs to tell Apple humans have ears that face in the same direction as their eyes also.

Obviously "Mr Jobs" didn't care or didn't want them since no version of the iPad ever had them.

Because even "stereo" speakers on the iPad would never sound as good as my Soundlink mini. ;)
