Save up $199 and buy a Bose Soundlink mini. Sound is better than anything you'd ever get out of a mobile device that is 1 inch thick. The sound really is amazing even over Bluetooth.

Very nice product, more suited to home use, IMO. For something that can take a bit of a beating, the Ultimate Ears Boom has excellent sound, but it's not as elegant looking as the Bose.

Hmm...I'll have to check it out. The Bose one does have cases but since I mostly use it indoors I didn't get one. For as much as people rip on Bose sound quality, this little thing pumps out amazing sound.

And they match the design of MacBooks perfectly. I got one for christmas and I use it ALL the time. I don't even remember what the sound out of default builtin speakers sound like.

I wish Apple would stop releasing everything in Q4, it makes buying their products a nightmare and nigh on impossible.

I'm currently in the market to replace my iPad 3, Nexus 5 (with an iPhone) and purchase an iWatch (if and when it's released).

If a Retina iMac was announced I may be tempted to replace my Late 2012 27" iMac also.

Money money money. Ahhhhhhh!

You don't have to buy it in the same quarter that Apple releases though.. you can just as well wait until Q1 or Q2 to pick up what you want. Gives you time to hear any initial feedback or receive potential fixes.

This thing is gorgeous, hope it's what the real one looks like.

Can't wait, my iPad 4 has served me well and this iPad Air 2, like the iPad 4, will be the "one to buy" if there are 2 GB of RAM and there aren't any screen issues.

Obviously "Mr Jobs" didn't care or didn't want them since no version of the iPad ever had them.

Because even "stereo" speakers on the iPad would never sound as good as my Soundlink mini. ;)

Point number 1. Indeed, exactly right. In the same way he didn't want a smaller iPad and even made fun of the notion of a smaller size. but he's dead now. We have a smaller iPad many love, so perhaps we will get better speakers also one day.

Point number 2. Indeed, I agree, whilst I have not heard them i'm sure any larger speaker enclosure designed for nice sound would be better quality than ones that could be fitted into a slim tablet. However, just because that may be the case, it does not mean you should not at least TRY to make the tablet sound experience the best it can be for the size of the device.

eg: Speaker not pointing away from you, so you have to cup your hand around the speakers output in an attempt to direct the sound waves to your ear.

On my iPad, soon after I got it, I even made a cardboard add on to improve the sound a lot, not really the done thing on a premium product, using cardboard to make one of the main human senses "sound" better.

The problem is with the ipad and the audio system, in the ipad old and the ipad new, this one we are discussing here.

The ipad is set up for audio to be played out when in portrait mode, that is with the speaker set at the "top" of the device. Apple made a design decision that leaves the audio when in landscape mode tending to be one-sided.

I watch movies and listen to the radio in landscape mode, as this is more convenient for me, as a result the audio is one sided, that is from the side vertically away from the microphone.

Why Apple could not put in 3 speakers, and have the device auto sense the orientation is a problem for me. We need to protest loudly about this oversight.

You have two options.... get yourself a pair of headphones or get yourself a stereo bluetooth speaker. :p Speakers take up a lot of room. Audio technology hasn't advanced very much in the past 50 years compared to other technologies. The speaker placement of the ipad doesn't bother me at all because I don't need it to replicate a home theater experience and just use a bluetooth speaker if i want better sound. The only things I'm interested in them improving is weight and bezel sizes.

Unless this "perfect replica" is pictured in the hands of an "Internet celebrity" who likes to grow his fingernails long, I say it's a fake. :D

Seriously, iPads do not need weight reduction again... It is light enough. They need keep the same weight and thickness to get better battery life.

I want front firing speakers and dual speaker on top bad bottom. Nobody in the earth watching movie in portrait mode. When holding your iPad in landscape mode, your hand will cover the speaker making sound muffle.

1024 MB of RAM

It will FLY with 1 GB of RAM, since you know, RAM doesn't matter in Apple devices, it's only for Windows and Android RAM hungry Apps

Ugh, I really thought my retina iPad mini with its 64-bit A7 chip would last me years... but with iOS opening up the fingerprint SDK to apps, and password keychain in safari working great across my devices, the thought of never typing a password again is SO tempting. I'm one of those people who have a different password for each site.
Personally, more tempting to me than any other processor, retina display, anything they've ever offered.

Here I am 8 months later ready to upgrade.

Touch ID in iOS 8 requires you to enter your password every 48 hours, not just from startup. I would assume the same for apps.

Lopsided audio again, count me out. the audio on the ipad mini is terrible.

audio w/ the mini's two speakers is louder than the ipads w/ only one speaker. im much happier w/ the mini's performance, we watch television on it all the time in bed.

That lightning port looks far from "perfect".

whats wrong with it? mine does every job i need it to.

MR really needs to learn to use words other than "alleged" to describe every rumor. Even if the word didn't imply something illegal or undesirable (which it does),

there isnt a denotative connection between alleged and something illegal. alleged means alleged. it was selected by the legal system and media because it describes a situation accurately. you can use it in positive or negative usages...such as: "I am allegedly the world's best lover" or "Women are so enamored with him they allegedly throw themselves at his feet wherever he goes", etc...

Never, Form over Function.
Although they might do that when they put forward facing speakers on iMac.

it isnt over function. for most people, the default speakers are fine on both devices. for those who require higher performing speakers, add-ons are available and the preferred solution. thus the built-ins form is following its function -- basic audio.

How is the latter half of 2014 "busy" for Apple?
SEP: iPod/iPhone & OCT: iPad.
Add to that some web-only announcements of updates to AppleTV & maybe iMac.

Sounds like a fairly typical year to me.

The Bose does sound great, I just think it's too nice to be banging around. That's why I think it would be the choice for at home use. It looks and sounds great.

The Ultimate Ears is even water resistant and it's made of a rubbery material. It would be hard to scratch and even harder to ding if you dropped it. It has 360 sound and sounds every bit as good as the Bose. I think it would be the one to use if you were using it on the go frequently, at the beach, outdoor use, etc. Less worried about marking it up. And if you did use it inside, the sound reflects very well if you place it near a corner.

Nice. Not sure when, but i'd like to update my ipad......feel sooooo heavy compared to the new airs! :)

Looks great. I'll be looking to replace my 3rd gen early next year when the funding is available. Hopefully this is close to what will be released, if it's not exactly what it'll look like.
As for the mute switch, I can see why they may remove it as holding the volume down button mutes it in a few seconds. Could be a pain if you use it for orientation lock, although it's a lot easier to get to the onscreen button now.

Whoever comes up with these "perfect replica's" must be either a genius, or has too much free time on their hands...

Its still a rumor, after all no matter what they think.

Nothing can prove otherwise. But we like to try :)

which make it so hilarious.

Bluetooth uses wifi, which in turns drains the battery on the ipad. Having stereo speakers in landscape mode would not be a huge issue, speakers are tiny, and can be designed in such a way to make use of the space, the battery can be any shape, the logic board and be modified.

The portrait mode sound speaker system is proof positive of the lack of design skill within Apple HQ, the decision beggers belief that we all watch Game of Thrones in portrait mode!!!

Unless there is more RAM and Touch ID based multi user accounts, I'm skipping this generation.

Not sure on the RAM but I doubt you'll ever get multi user accounts on an iPad. It was designed to be a personal device, not a laptop workstation replacement. Multi accounts would be yuk on an iPad, IMO. Sharing them sucks anyways.

I think user accounts would work well in conjunction with Touch ID. Each user would have their own profile, restrictions, etc tied to their fingerprint. This would be especially useful for families with children. I think by now Apple realizes that most families may only have one iPad.

Looks so nice! If only it was useful for work, I'd buy one :(

Eh, I hope not. Apple speakers are a lot better, as are most.

the BEATS speakers in my friends HTC ONE sound alot better than the ones in my iphone... or any other smartphone from last year. not sure about new devices.

BEATS might not make the best/good headphones, but their phone speakers are not bad. (well actually most phone speakers just suck, so it's not hard to beat them)

The primary uses of alleged are to describe an accusation, legal or otherwise. In either case, the connotation is definitely negative. My main issue with its use here is that nearly everything that might be true is said to be alleged. I think the reason the word is over-used is because it sounds so much more weighty than simply reporting something as a rumor or speculation or only possibly true. The heft of the word is a consequence of its conventional meaning. The key to clear writing is to choose the words that best communicate your intending meaning, not to create a dramatic affect.
