That looks tiny! I can see this becoming the fragile connector that constantly fails and causes us to pull our hair out!

So far the design is the same as iphone 4 but they changed everything else! I don't get it any more. This next gen is just getting me down about design choices at cupertino.

Steve wouldn't have allowed the damn speaker grilles unmatched, either. I seriously dislike that, personally. OCD, i guess.

110% agree! so so so so so so so much.

this reminds me of a charger on a very old motorolla phone I used to have. It sucked. The whole phone as well as the charger, which you had to position *just right* in order for it to work.

I'm sure this new port won't be like that, but it did make me think of that old piece of junk.

The only issue I see with this is, if you look at the adapter from the top down, it doesn't look like its the correct shape to fit in the phone. It looks more squared off at the ends and not rounded. Wouldn't the phone case have more of a rectangular opening than a partly oval opening if this was truly the correct adapter for the phone?

The sizes look very similar, and the shadows on the iPhone mockup are obscuring the hole shape too much to draw any 'oval' conclusions. Having an oval entry into a more rectangular hole would make insertion easier. At least that's what she said.

man, Apple parts are leaking left and right. what's up with that? I want to keep the element of the surprise!

Did you happen apon Macrumors by mistake then?

If you want a surprise, I suggest you stop frequenting Apple rumor sites.

Where's the "cease & desist" countermeasures?

For the controlled leak conspiracy theorists, one thing that's missing in this seemingly steady stream of leaks is the "cease & desist" reaction from Apple. Recall in the past that when there were leaks that would actually turn out to be real, we would soon see legal action from Apple demanding the removal of photos, etc. Those cease & desist actions would show up here as rumor posts because they seemed to add to the validation that maybe those particular rumors were, in fact, valid.

No such actions this time. Does anyone who have been following pre-launch rumors the last few years NOT feel like there has been a relative tidal wave of leaks this go around? Yet how many notes of Apple Legal taking action this time? Has there been ONE cease & desist action for iPhone 5/6 leaks or photos?

We could foolishly believe that maybe all of Apple Legal is distracted with the Samsung trial, but I wonder if maybe there is something to the controlled leak conspiracy. Roll out leaks of plausible but seemingly undesirable choices and then surprise when the real phone is rolled out. Disinformation is a great way to distract the ever-hungry rumor mongers.

Maybe "doubling down" is a proactive disinformation approach. After all, if that is the case, every single future impending product rumor would certainly be seen as questionable under the banner of "remember the iPhone 5/6 tall but not wider, even thinner instead of more battery, magsafe, A5X instead of A6," blah blah blah. A good disinformation surprise would fuel rampant skepticism about every new product rumor for the next year or two. Hmmmm

True, that is what she said!

The photos are "alleged" -- meaning they might not be actual photos, or was this meant to say that the photos are illegal or undesirable?

Do you really think that Apple is going to come out with a duplicate copy of your old Motorola connector and charger? Personally, I have more faith in them than that.

The only problem I see with this is that a cease and desist would almost prove these to be genuine. Better to just not comment.

Couldn't have said it better myself! :D I like where you are going with this.

Right. But that's not been Apple's practice. When too much of the curtain has been pulled back, the cease & desist actions have been taken by Apple. If all this cumulative information all proves out, what's really left for the big reveal behind the curtain?

It could be a new strategy by Apple (to not sick the Lawyers on the leakers). But the risk in that is that there is absolutely no "big reveal" that Apple seems to so love.

It's called misinformation...

"We are doubling down on secrecy."

-Tim

Lol.

What many of you don't understand is that the most effective form of security is misinformation and lots of it. By leaking tons of seemingly credible information, you create static... fog that shields your true intention. The other great side effect of this is buzz around the new product.

This isn't to say this isn't a viable leak... but this could also be simply a magician's slight of hand. Keep the audience looking at the pretty colors while you pull a rabbit out of your sleeve.

that looks pretty but fragile?

What on earth leads to you that conclusion? One photo of the product disassembled? I'm sure you're right though. I'm sure Apple is replacing their decade-old dock connector for the first time with something far inferior. Good post!

Sure. Why not. Better than a magsafe, imo.

And how is that? How is any connector they come up with that pushes in and pulls out better than MagSafe? Here's a hint: Its not.

Mmmm, exposed metal strips, nice and damageable...

Because that makes any sense...

So, can we expect a USB 3.0 connection or a Thunderbolt one?
I'd love to connect my iPhone 5 via Thunderbolt and have almost instant backups and syncs.

Good grief. Do you really need to ask this question? Apple will be mass producing hundreds of millions of this new connector. Trust me. There will be no Thunderbolt. There will be, however, USB. And people with USB 3 (like, new Mac owners, for example) will take advantage of sync/backup speeds more than 5 times faster than today. Is that not good enough for you?

Why not just use Thunderbolt for everything now?

Could possibly have something to do with Thunderbolt being located on less than 3% of iPhone buyers home computers. That's just a guess though.

I'll wait and see on the robustness. As has been noted, it could have problems, but it might be OK.
Loving the idea of it inserting either way. That is one of the best things about Magsafe.

Its just ROTFL hilarious how many people have ventured the thought that Apple might produce a weak, problematic connector. They've had a DECADE to redesign this connector and go through prototype iterations. I think there is a chance it might be GOOD...

Hopefully there will be options to connect with either.

See above.

I was hoping for a MagSafe style connector, though I guess people don't lay their phones charging around like they do laptops.

I'm still hoping its MagSafe. MagSafe is the only sensible power connector on the market, anywhere.

There will probably be an adapter from the 30 pin to whatever the smaller one might be, if there really is a smaller one

There will be. And it will probably cost $5 less than just buying a new cable.

Regardless, The massive iOS device accessory market is due for a reboot. Business wise, its brilliant to suddenly make a decade of accessories obsolete and need replacing.

This is may be magnet and will pop in. Don't expect a quick release as the phone is too light.

doubling down on secrecy, lol pathetic

Again with the ignorant remarks on Tim Cook's "doubling down on security" line.

Preventing leaks with so many disparate supply sources in multiple countries is no trivial matter and will take considerable time. Complete control over leaks is impossible.

Something is pathetic, but it's not Tim Cook's comment. It's the one quoted at the top of my post.

Um...... yeah man..... just gotta read my whole post. It's not like it was that long.

The bottleneck is the flash on the phone, not the transfer speeds.

Apple does not care about its big reveals, it cares about its bottom line.

And free advertising in the form of hype has proven that it only works to fuel launch day sales.

Look up "Barbara Steisand Effect" - if they would start legal action, they would:

1. cause the immage to be spread on the internet.

2. higher publicity

3. have to prove it's their IP

4. acknowledge that this part is real and legit

Any of these consequences alone prohibits Apple from doing this. It might make sense if someone has a phone found in a bar but not in this case.
