Wow. They can even make their connectors look beautiful.

This!

The knee-jerk complaints on here are ludicrous. Looks very simple, solid, beautiful, and durable to me. Better than what had I hoped for! The previous dock connector was always more appealing than USB to me, and now they've topped it (assuming this is real).

Look up "Barbara Steisand Effect" - if they would start legal action, they would:

1. cause the immage to be spread on the internet.

2. higher publicity

3. have to prove it's their IP

4. acknowledge that this part is real and legit

Any of these consequences alone prohibits Apple from doing this. It might make sense if someone has a phone found in a bar but not in this case.

Again, in the past, Apple has done this. I understand your point but Apple has done this very thing in the past... including the recent past with the prior model iPhone.

Can't wait for the New iPhone. Just sold my factory unlocked iPhone 4S today, now using my backup iPhone 4. Can't wait!!!!

I stopped believing that these are controlled leaks when the battery was leaked. That doesnt do them any favours

Apple does not care about its big reveals, it cares about its bottom line.

I'm going to assume you are joking here or maybe haven't been around for a while. Apple loves the big reveal. Every significant launch revolves around a media event which is entirely about making the world oooh and ahhh over the latest & greatest.

If you were not joking, I'll just accept that you believe what you believe.

But I could be, that the new connector has 50% of the MagSafe idea: Not magnetic, but you can insert the plug in both directions.

17 pins

If it can go in either way, and it has a chipset on it, then it could also be a 17 pin connector - 8 each side and the body as ground. The chipset could switch the connection depending on the orientation automatically. I think its Thunderbolt and USB compatible with MagSafe since there is no compression / friction point you can see on the male side. Although admittedly there could be a friction point could be on the inside of the phone...

Could iPhone 5 be water resistant to some degree?

Just throwing this one out there, but it's something I've been thinking about for a while now:

Given longevity of original iPhone dock, you'd expect Apple to be thinking as far ahead as possible when changing it (unless you subscribe to the more extreme 'planned obsolescence' theories), and also to want to take full advantage of all the potential a redesign could offer.

The old dock connector would have been a major barrier to water resistance—this new one looks like it could fit a watertight socket...?

Also, think of the new speaker grills: much larger grills (to allow water to drain out) with a waterproof speaker membrane behind?

No sure how the regular ear-position speaker might be made watertight though—any examples out there?

As I said, I keep thinking about this, so thought I'd share...

The dock connector serves a few purposes. Besides transmitting data and charging the device, it holds up the device in a standing position.

When I first saw the size of the alleged new dock connector, I was concerned that it would not be large enough to properly hold up an iPhone or the heavier iPad.

If this leak is accurate, it looks like this new connector will be long and sturdy enough to support the weight of all iOS devices.

There will probably be an adapter from the 30 pin to whatever the smaller one might be, if there really is a smaller one

I don't have many extra cables. We have one from my old iPod Video and an iPod Mini, but those are so old they are beat. Same with the Gen 1 iPhone cable and my iPhone 3G cable. I typically give the charger with the phone when I sell it on craigslist anyway.

That's a great benefit of magsafe on a heavier device, but I am still hoping it comes to the iOS devices because it makes inserting the cable so darn easy, and a one-handed operation (think trying to plug a phone in while driving a car...)

Those contacts are not exposed while being plugged into a live power source, however.

I touch the "exposed" ends of my magsafe all the time while it is plugged in. I have yet to get electrocuted. Am I missing something? Does no one else get bored and push in the spring loaded connectors with their finger?

If you are in a disinformation campaign, one strategy is a stream of less-than-ideal releases into the rumor mill. Let the rumor mill propagate mild disappointment to mild interest in spite of- say- "very little improvement in battery capacity in exchange for an even thinner case on a longer device". Does the phone actually need to get even thinner? Especially if the tradeoff is battery life in what is presumed to be a higher (power) demanding phone?

I don't know if I buy into the disinformation conspiracy theory myself but I am intrigued at a sequence of events:
  • "We're doubling down"
  • Seemingly more tangible rumors than ever before including clear (not blurry) photo after photo
  • No "cease & desist" actions for any of this (unlike what we've seen from Apple in the past).

The rumors for even the most Apple faithful (here) seem to generally lean to the disappointing. That could be classic "expectations deflation" ahead of the big reveal. Think about it: if we're all expecting 1) taller but not wider (new aspect ratio issues for all apps), 2) little to no improvement to battery capacity but a higher power demand phone, 3) a new dock connector that obsoletes every dock connecter device & cable we currently own, 4) a two-tone back plate, etc... and then Apple rolls out something different (more in line with what seems to be the collective wants of a proportionally larger screen, better battery, etc,) the PR upside is huge and there's no business downside.

Looks EXTREMELY FRAGILE, but with that being said the issue is really all the cables people already have and what to do.

My Recommendation to Apple.

** The converter you are going to put out with the iPhone should be free. You should include 2-3 for FREE with a new iPhone or iPad so people can use their existing cables. Then you should sell them for about $1-$2 each or $5 for a pack of 3 (about 10 times what you pay for them) and not $10 or $20 each. This will be a good faith gesture that changing the cable to a new and fragile cable is nothing more than a ploy to sell more 10 cent cables for $20. **

These are probably the most leaks we've ever had for an iPhone. More than the original iPhone 4. My guess is everything we are seeing now is EXACTLY what we're getting.

My question, how does it stay in? It looks like it's just a little slot. Maybe it'll be like an SD Card that locks in to place and you push in to release it.

you do realize the actual phone was leaked for the iphone 4 right?

A good unit (stereo/whatever) doesn't rely just on the dock connector to hold up the device. There is typically a small back support.

It's because the power is converted from AC to DC (low voltage).

9-Pin Connector? What are we going to loose in functionality? The 30pin Connector had a lot of features that could be connected: Component Video, HDMI, Digital/Analog Audio I/O, USB connectivity, etc.
What is going away with the new 9-pin Connector?

It does look strong, but at the same time, kind of small to hold an iPad; I would imagine the iPad side will be reinforced, hopefully a solid single piece of metal at the base, otherwise an accidental mishandling of the unit while docked could cause either the port or the dock (or even both) to break. I hope Apple consider that (I'm sure they did).

If you put a light bulb in your mouth when you do that, does it come on?

(And for the geeks), you wouldn't have a sister named Ayla Ranzz would you?

...or a brother named Gomez Addams?

All ;)

Steve wouldn't have allowed the damn speaker grilles unmatched, either. I seriously dislike that, personally. OCD, i guess.

are you upset that there are no two rear cameras? Or that the volume buttons are not on both sides?

I for one am glad that they are making the speaker bigger if there is room. No way a microphone needs as much space as a decent speaker. Why not take advantage of the extra space?
