Oh yes it does... The oldest models of the iPhone that can run iOS 7 fluidly (no hiccups whatsoever) are the 5 and the 5c...

That still doesn't show that it's the amount of RAM causing the slowness, unless there is an A5 based device that's smooth (and you just basically said there isn't).

Yeah how else are you going to get back the websites in the tabs that close all the time?

Or it could be that people actually enjoy using their iDevices and therefore use them more? Not just for websites, facetime is a regular part of my family's daily routine, even if we don't live far apart. I rarely see non-iphone users skyping with eachother unless it's completely necessary for something. Having video chat built into the OS definitely helps.

You can try out what he has said below... :p:p

Puny half gig?

Umm... I still seem to remember when then top-of-the-line titanium PowerBook G4 came with half gig standard, with the option to upgrade to full gigabyte. Sure it was 12 years ago but it was a full blown laptop for God's sake! Same thing had 60GB hard drive by default and now 64GB flash storage is nothing..?

Surely a phone could survive, if you just didn't have to load p0rn on all Safari tabs :D :D :D

Because they make up like 97% of the mobile market, why else?

Android makes up 97% of the mobile market? Why do you think that is? I see more iphones than I do androids but maybe I don't get out as much as I would like.

So basically useless pro-Apple data like the useless pro-Android general market share numbers

What makes it useless? The fact that it doesn't work in your favor in the debate? Someone made a comment that it's annoying to use the Internet on an iPhone, I countered that with data that iPhone users notoriously use more Internet. Now, how exactly is that a useless statistic? On the contrary, seemed pretty damn spot on here.

No the op said why does it always have to be one or the other...I said because they both make up 97%...android is around 85% btw

Oh. But even still, 85%? Is that really true? If so that is huge. I still don't get it, iphones are EVERYWHERE. How can android be more popular. Unless that is worldwide and if so nobody must be using iphone outside of the USA.

iOS comes from OS X, so I'd say yes, iOS can and does use virtual memory

Nope, it doesn't. It could use it, but Apple likely decided against it because using the flash memory for virtual memory would wear it down quickly. OS X uses it because macs with flash memory have SSD's, which have a controller that levels out the writes extending the life of the disk dramatically.

This is a good thing for consumers; not a bad thing.

What people forget is there is not any need for more than 1GB of RAM at present - nor the near future. Apple placing a limit like this FORCES Software optimisation and neglects lazy programming.

Leave the crap for MALndroid & the quality for Apple.

Note 4, i am comeing:)

You & many others will not be missed. If you want a notepad then do not look at a mobile phone.

Yep according to the last market share stats I saw it was 85%...might be bigger now.

And yes its global.

More RAM = more cached apps

Safari can get a good use of this increase, as well as Mail.

If Apple don't increase the RAM, ill be sad.

Apps are not cached n ram lol they are cached on disk/flash memory, just like OSX, Windows, Linux and any other OS that runs apps.

He's talking about the percentage of users of a given OS that actively use their phone to browse the web, not the popularity of the OS.

iPhone users use theirs phones to browse the web more than android users do, that's all he's saying.

I don't understand why one needs more than 1GB RAM on a smartphone, but what do I know...

Of course iOS has virtual memory. It is also true that it dos not use a swap file, for the reasons you already state. At any rate, virtual memory != swap.

Yeah, the US is a bit different to the rest of the world when it comes to market share. I live in Hong Kong which has a very affluent, savvy and modern population of mobile users. 3 years ago all you saw was iphones, in that 3 years its changed quickly. Now looking around on the train in the morning you are lucky to see an iPhone. Tends to be mostly expats who have them now.

Apple could take the 5S, bump up the screen size, double the RAM, significantly improve battery life, make no other changes whatsoever and I would buy it. But still 1GB ram? Really? Even now, today, Safari tab reloading is anoying as hell and apps are getting killed left and right (you can tell since the screenshot of the app shown in task manager often doesn't match what you actually get when you open that app again), I can't imagine could bad it will get in a few years.
