They are all garbage and inferior for one reason or another. Apple are not a bunch of amateur dunces, they know what they are doing. They probably spent millions of man hours reviewing all of those designs (and 1000s or more), compare / contrast, weighting cost vs ability to manufacture vs usability, finally coming up with the BEST phone ever made, also known as the iPhone X. So be humble and remember that YOU are the peanut gallery, Apple is changing the world with or without you.

I really dig the new rendering on the left flat five :D
It just feels so much better looking at it and would also be better using it daily.
I don't mind even if it's 0.2 inches less than the current X model.
No uneven ears sticking up. Or Maybe I'm OCD :)

here's another version as discussed with @Applejuiced

it's sort of like version 4 above except this one has a bit more vertical height.. basically, it moves the sensor housing up then makes a straight bezel..

AJ version on left -- iPhone X on right.

subjectively (;) )
i think i would still pick the X over this one.. but, this one moves into second choice position for me (or, i think it does.. i just don't really like any of the other versions* but this one seems sort of neat)

*not counting v6.. that one is neat too.
[doublepost=1508646758][/doublepost]Lol :D
Apple does not tell me what I like and what I do not. They are not this almighty huge company that tells me what to buy and I just go and give them my money every year.
And it means nothing if they spend millions of man hours and millions of dollars speculating and researching.
If people do not like it and don't buy it's then all a big fail and waste of money.
And guess what, they are not changing the world at all with this beta iPhone x test.
Everything they're putting out this year has already been done many years ago.
People have minds of their own and they don't blindly just purchase whatever Apple puts out. Not all humans are sheep;)

Top two corners of the screen in your version are not the same curve as the bottom two corners. Seems pointless and offers nothing.

Lol :D
So the 2 corners that are not of the identical angle would bother you but not a chunk on the top of the screen missing and the ears sticking up are ok?
I didn't even notice the corner difference, but the asymmetrical piece of screen gone on the top sticks out like a sore thumb from a mile away ;)

And once again it‘s clear as daylight that Apple is right and the doubters (notch-mockers) are wrong. The only thing about the X that is worthy of criticism is the price, especially in europe.
“Notch-mockers”???? I like the sound of that. Next time I get cut off in traffic I’ll roll down the window, flip the bird and shriek “Learn to drive, you notch-mocker!”

“You dirty son-of-a-notch-mocker!”—could become a very popular line in action adventure movies. It would let movies keep the more marketable PG-13 rating.

Very clever.

“Notch-mockers vs. Permaturd-Lovers” a story of the 2017 MacRumors civil war.

FWIW, most of the time I’m fine with the notch, but I hope Apple allows devs the latitude to make it disappear into the background in apps when the developer and his/her customers would judge it to intrude into content or user experience too much. (However I’ve heard and read Apple may in fact discourage that..wth.)

What the hell? I’m the peanut gallery with the thousand plus dollars Apple wants in their coffers. They give ME what I want or I get something else from someone else. Even if I have to resort to owls and parchment to avoid their garbage designs. Fortunately I don’t have an issue with their design, yet. I can’t, when I haven’t seen it in person yet. Right now I’m just speculating.

Anyway, I’m not humbling myself to a company, especially if they’re not offering what I want. Jeez Louise, just when I think I’ve heard it all. Please tell me the dry humor and sarcasm went over my head, there.

Why would developers need to make the ears disappear? They only contain status bar info and don’t intrude on an app when an app technically can’t go past the bottom of the “notch”. (I’m talking about portrait orientation. Landscape orientation you could have a case.) Seems counter productive to add screen and then hide it via software (again, talking portrait orientation)

Here is a very solid example of Carrot Weather App on an X. Straight from the developers of the app themselves.

Oh I don’t think I’d notice it in portrait orientation often myself. But for games and videos and some few other apps in landscape, that’s what I mean. Let it become black and disappear into the rest of the black that rings the display so that it doesn’t draw the eye too much. There may also be call to do that in portrait orientation but it won’t be an easy call to make until people actually get to see and use it and develop for it. I’m just hoping Apple allows developers the latitude to make that call. But Apple being Apple, apparently, if rumors are true, won’t let them do that and instead want the notch to be visible at all times. Or so I’ve heard.

I can’t object seriously to anything at this point until I see it all in action.

If App devs are free to do as they wish with the ears, then it'd be in their best interests to not have them interfere with their games etc. & distract their customers, so we'll most likely see them blackened out.

Just a matter of whether Apple will let them...

I happen to have some render proposals that might be interesting to see.

#1 notch to the left (or right) instead of being cenetered.

#2 notch split in half and each half put on each side, so that the current notch space is screen and the ears are notches.

Either way I still thing the X notch is the best possible design out of all these scenarios.

hey rafark.. here's what those two (might) look like :

--------
in my opinion:
left is bad.. i personally don't like that one at all.

right is ok, i guess, but i prefer the notch in the middle.. i think.

full screen videos will be more immersive feeling when the the content is flooding out into the corners.. it's not as if we actually watch the corners of the movies but our peripherals do pick up on action out in those far reaches.

------
the one on the right could still be problematic because i don't know how they'd deal with the speaker hole.. getting cameras etc under the display is one thing.. but i think with the speaker&mic, they still need to have an actual hole cut through the glass.. so in either of these versions, that hole probably couldn't be centered which may be a problem for phone calls

I say...... #7
for reference:
that one, at least according to this particular rendering, is 16mm taller than the others.. (about 5/8")

so more space for some other goodies.. maybe a higher capacity battery? some other physical buttons on the sides? headphone jack? :)

just enough steel to protect the corners and allow them a place to fuse the two sides of glass together.

: )

*that's sort of what Samsung did on the S8.. wrapped the glass around except in the corners where it's most likely to break.. so they brought the frame back up in those parts..

for this one though, i don't think the technology is ready yet ;)

I would go for #1 if the screen was enlarged to Plus size.

I cannot see the point of these elongated screens. I am not going to watch wide screen films on a phone. I am sure Apple only made the X screen that shape to compete head on with the Samsung 8.

The width of the Plus has never been a problem fitting in my pocket, but shorted, so it does not protrude would be welcome

that one seems pretty cool Jonathan and one that a lot of people might like..

it's barely any taller than the X but wider.. (but a little less wide than the 8 plus)..
the screen remains true rectangular as on the plus models so no corner cuts.

there's not enough room on the bezel for a home button so it still needs FaceID or touchID under display (or on the back)

That would be it! Maybe not as modern looking as the X, but for me the perfect iPhone combining the best elements of the Plus. I don’t mind face ID if it works (we will soon find out)

Missing the one where it's like the X but with the notch area always black with white text. That to me is the most aesthetically pleasing way to do it.

Apple will not let them and it has little to do with "design" per se as many people assume it to be. It is because such workarounds to hide the notch will inevitably accelerate AMOLED burn-in which would separate the "ears" from the rest of display. The phone would end up having a grotesque uniformity issue in short order on top of the ugly notch.

Based on the reception of Face ID, and the overall design of this new iPhone, I think those will be the two factors that will influence more to migrate to the iPhone X that are unsure. There are some who are displaced over the notch and lack of touch ID, which stops them from purchasing it.
