Based on the reception of Face ID, and the overall design of this new iPhone, I think those will be the two factors that will influence more to migrate to the iPhone X that are unsure. There are some who are displaced over the notch and lack of touch ID, which stops them from purchasing it.

It’s cost for me. That’s the primary reason l’m sticking with my JB 7+. I’m finally stepping off the annual upgrade treadmill.

I don't disagree. iPhones and smart phones in general have increasingly become more expensive. The iPhone is a commodity, and they are easily supported at least five years in terms of iOS updates and we all know how well the hardware is made. But I think hype over takes so many, they feel the need to upgrade when their current device serves them perfectly well. But everyone has choices and I respect that.

For me after considering all aspects and reading numerous reviews since the keynote, I have just ordered the iPhone 8 Plus to replace my 7 Plus mainly for the camera improvements. I just don't think I want to live with the X and that eyesore of a notch and letter box display ratio.

#6 makes no sense. Where does the front facing camera go? IR? Dot projector? Speaker?

Is't that obvious? it all goes under the screen ;)
Although i hope by the time they'll manage to make it happen, they'll use TouchID under the screen instead of FaceID.

PS, If only they would change the home button shape from round to thin strip, #2 & #3 could have been realistic by now, without the need for FaceID.

hey rafark.. here's what those two (might) look like :

in my opinion:
left is bad.. i personally don't like that one at all.

right is ok, i guess, but i prefer the notch in the middle.. i think.

full screen videos will be more immersive feeling when the the content is flooding out into the corners.. it's not as if we actually watch the corners of the movies but our peripherals do pick up on action out in those far reaches.

------
the one on the right could still be problematic because i don't know how they'd deal with the speaker hole.. getting cameras etc under the display is one thing.. but i think with the speaker&mic, they still need to have an actual hole cut through the glass.. so in either of these versions, that hole probably couldn't be centered which may be a problem for phone calls

Great work flat five! Surprisingly, the one with the notch on the left of the screen end up looking better (or less worse) than the one with the bezels on the edges.

I still think the X is the best design they could make with current technologies.

How about #6 but with the actual components cut out of the screen rather than a full notch? What would it be, circle, thin strip, circle? Surely this is doable albeit more expensive custom oled array?

1. Looks too much like an Android.
2. Looks too much like an Android.
3. Sunken icons look ugly.
4. Sunken icons look ugly; also phone is too asymmetrical along the horizontal axis.
5. Isn't that just an iPhone X?
6. Okay, but how am I supposed to hear calls, FaceTime, have autobrightness, and biometric security?
7. Looks too much like an Android.

it would be all of these things needing cutouts, i imagine..
Apple has all of this stuff packed in pretty tight it seems.. after cutting all the various holes in the display, you'd pretty much be left with the current notch ;)

oh.. the icons wouldn't actually be sunken like that..
the reason i showed them that way was to compare how much screen is being sacrificed with the various iterations.

it's meant to be used as a sense of scale.. not a mockup of the UI that would be on each phone.

5. Isn't that just an iPhone X?
yep

What is your personal opinion on which of those options is the best?

#5

maybe #6 if technology allowed..

personally, i think the iPhone X is super sweet design and way better than any of the other versions in the thread..
however, when i originally made this thread, i didn't want it to be based around my opinions and instead meant for it to just objectively show some of the versions which were suggested by other members as being better designs.

Aw come on give it a go!

Look at what actually needs to be open, it would totally be more immersive... It may look silly but surely less silly than some of these options
