Thank you and congratulations to you, too! And I agree, it all depends on the person. Want might be just as important as need to some people.

I don't blame the people who think paying extra is stupid, nor do I think anyone should blame the people who want to pay extra. Let's face it, we're probably all overpaying for our Macbooks whether we got the 2.0 or 2.4.

I don't bash on people for buying the 2.4 because they want it or like the backlit keyboard, but trying to justify it by saying it's a big difference in CPU performance and that it will be useful in a few years (which some do) is just lying :p

But if you buy the 2.4 because you want to, thats great :) As long as you value the computer more then the money it's a good deal ;)

I rather take the cheaper and switch in a year, since you probobly lose less money in taking the cheaper and selling in a year.

Got the 2.4 with the extra RAM. Apple's prices for this are reasonable this time around.
Will update the HD myself with the Seagate Scorpio Blue 500GB, which seems the best option for that capacity: speedier, quieter and more energy efficient than Samsung's offering.
No, no they're not. £100 for the upgrade - it's £95 at Crucial.com and you get to keep your original RAM (worth £46 at Crucial), that's 1.5 times more!
I have been trying to get a MacBook since they were released on Tuesday from Apple Stores across London, but they are selling out really fast so I decided to order it online from work and since I work at a University I get an educational discount. I have ordered a custom configured MacBook.

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

4 GB of DDR3 RAM

320 GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM)

It came to £1,133.88 which is cheaper than the stock configuration of the MacBook, I basically got the upgrades for free. I am going to buy AppleCare at the end of the month, educational price is only £50.
See, I can't justify that - my Pro last year was £1250 or so with 2GB RAM, 2.4Ghz, 200GB (or so, I can't remember!), backlit keyboard, larger screen, LED and AppleCare, the prices have gone up (considering the technology) or stayed static.

The difference is that GBP is now weaker against USD.

Got the 2.0. The 2.4 didn't make any sense to me....0.4 GHz (negligible), 90 gigs more HD (ok, more important), and a backlit keyboard (big deal), all for $300 more. Got AppleCare instead. =)

$300 seems quite a bit for the applecare for a MacBook. I paid $170+$5 shipping for my Applecare for my wife's MBP earlier in the year. I need to get another Applecare for my wife's MBP within the next couple weeks and I'm expecting to spend the same amount.

Got the 2.0 (haven't recived it yet, didn't know adding a VGA adaptor made it a special order...). Wasn't worth the 350$ (or 300$ with student rebate) in canadian $.

I didn't really see the the point of the upgrade, sure I could have used the 2.4 processor, and probably have been one of the few users to actually use it. I don't really need the extra drive space and I never look at my keyboard and couldn't care less of the backlight.

I'll probably up the ram when the price on ddr3 comes down and change the laptop in 2 years.

Well,

When I DO purchase this in a few months, I'm opting for the 2.0 GHz model.

400 Mhz is nothing and definitely not worth $300. And although a back-lit keyboard would be nice, I don't need it! I don't look at the keyboard when I type..

And space is definitely NOT an issue. I use less than 70 GB on my current laptop.

The 2.0 GHz is more than enough for my needs. :)

At the time of purchase, the dollar was roughly the same as it is now (1.7 or so), if not stronger.

Yeah but it was probably over 2.0 when apple priced it up and added it to their catalogue. the apple store prices don't fluctuate with the currency market. You simply took advantage of buying an American product at a price which was out of date regarding GBP/USD. The new line up has unfortunately allowed apple to get their sterling prices inline with the times. It's a bugger really, but what can you expect?

I didn't buy one yet, but when I did it's going to be the 2.4 model because of the blacklit keyboard. Kind of sad, I really think they should offer it on both models.

I'm in process ordering the new Macbook.....$1249 looking good to me, but I'm going to use Windows on it with bootcamp. Macbook's dual platform capable is attractive to me. Will surely upgrade the RAM eventually. Still undecided on 2.0 or 2.4. The keyboard is no big deal to me, however, might consider upgrading the HD to 250g for dual boot purpose. $160 difference for additional 400mhz speed is necessary?

People who got the 2.0 really need to stop hating on the 2.4 purchasers. I'm sorry I have more money than you?! Get over it? Mine is better, yes it cost more money, but let's face it, we both got ripped off, they're BOTH overpriced.

One word: BIT-TER.

Wow... Someone's a bit arrogant.

I don't think money is that much of an issue... if people are already spending over $1300 for a laptop, I'm sure they can scrape up another $300. I think they'd just rather SAVE that money for something more useful.

A lot of people don't need to look at their keyboard while typing, so a backlit keyboard is pretty much a moot point. And in the rare instance they need to look at the keyboard the SCREEN provides more than enough light to find that one key.

So... my two options are getting ripped off or getting even MORE ripped off... I think I choose the first one. ;)

I'm on the fence on this as well. Yeah, it is a pretty big price up front, but I can make my laptop last ~4 years which will make this a worthwhile purchase. Therefore, the 2.4 model is for me when I pick this baby up in a few weeks.

That's a personal opinion. Once again, it the 2.4 people's fault that you don't want to spend 300 more bucks. We don't care, we did. So stop hating. That's what I said and for some reason it still wasn't comprehended.

I look at it this way. The difference in 2.0ghz to 2.4ghz is maybe a 10% incerase in general speed today (you'll never get the full 20% due to memory, video card, hard disk etc).

Processors double in speed every 24 months or so, so we're looking at a 100% increase in speed in 2 years (assuming memory, bus and disk speeds at least keep pace).

The 10% today is insignificant in a year or two's time compared with the much faster machines available then.

Spending less now and buying a faster machine sooner will get you more computing power for the money than spending more now to make a machine last longer.

Just placed an order for the 2.4 GHz model. Should be here by the end of the week :)
