One of my favourite features of phones with OLED screens is an "always on" display showing the time/date/notifications all the time, without having to activate the phone by tapping the screen or pressing a button.

This feature sadly seems to be missing from the iPhone X unless I've missed some photos/videos showing it?

Hopefully it could be enabled by a later software update; I'll be keeping my S8+ otherwise..

Was anyone else hoping for this. I know it is impolite to bring up the competition but, Samsung does a better job leveraging the technology of OLED as of now. The always on display would be a nice option on the charging screen or when driving. Did any one see this as an option. It's a small feature but when used correctly adds a lot of usability.

I didn't see this as an option during the KeyNote. I don't believe this will be applicable for the OLED model.

Definitely something Apple should take advantage of, but they seem a bit lost at the moment. Maybe iOS 12.

I actually considered iPhone X (always have been Android user) but because there is no always on screen and because of the bumb would be distracting when viewing videos... Gonna keep my Note 8 order.... bummer

Anyone think Apple may ever update iOS to include Always On Display? It’s one feature I wish we could have now that we have a OLED screen.

It’s a possibility with iOS 12. I don’t think they’d do that with a dot release.

I know this is something that's been requested by many. But with the possibility of burn in, I don't know that they will. And the Apple Watch is another device that also does not utilize an always on display, which after three years, I don't know the Apple will ever venture onto this path.

I think the reason Apple didn't utilize AOD on Apple Watch is that the battery on AW is too tiny to support energy required by AOD. I always love the AOD on Samsung S7 phones.

I agree it's likely also to help conserve battery, but I still think they kept in mind with burn in being a possibility.

Samsung's AOD moves position every x amount of time to avoid burn in, battery drain is very minimal, and there is a setting that automatically turns off the AOD while in a pocket, bag or purse. There's no reason Apple can't implement that.

I have it on the Galaxy S8 and there is zero issues when it comes to burning from always ON. Because it does shift across the display and does not stay on same spot all times. And since iPhones have no LED notification indicator, I really think they should implement always on display. There are times when my phone is on the desk, u just want to glance on it for any messages, knowing this without having to tap on the screen or picking up the phone is great for me. I hope they will implement it.

That's how Apple is though. They do things their way contrary to what other smart phone competitors do. The same argument was made about why doesn't the Apple Watch have an always on display, and it's been three years and they have never implemented it. Similarly to why does the iPhone not have an LED indicator, etc.

They will, in the next year version of the X.
If you expect Apple to give all those, revolutionairy, features to this years model you're insane! Then they wouldn't have anything new for the next years model and no good reason for increasing the price.

If Apple acts the way Apple does, the next generation phone may have it, and there will be some excuse as to why it will not be backwards implemented on this X.

I really wanted a similar feature, we created an app that resembles something like this, expect that you will have to open it manually. It prevents burn-in in on the iPhone X lock screen by taking jumps each hour and has various of features. Search OLEDX on the App Store if you want to check it out. However i am not sure if the app will be around for long.

This is actually pretty great! Have it sitting on my desk while working and it turns off if I cover the proximity sensor. Does it have notification support? Does the displayed information only move if you tap the screen? Another thing I'd like to see is now playing information.

There is no way to access notifications from a third party app so i do not think we can bring notification support, though that would be super useful. The information interface takes a jump each hour and slightly moved each minute on the previous update, if possible it will be re-integrated. I think we can do something about adding more information and there are various of features that can be implemented to make the experience better. Yesterday i turned on the star roof feature and left it open while driving, looked incredible.
