Of course the OP is asking about an 8, so can't be done unless you want 2 hour battery life.:D

For the X there is an app that 'simulates' the off screen. The biggest problem is the iPhone must be unlocked to use.

Hopefully Apple will offer this, maybe in iOS 12 (fingers crossed but.....Apple is usually slow at best on these kinds of things). However knowing Apple it could be exclusive to the XI (????) iPhone.o_O

Nice app but it needs to be dimmable and maybe offer an auto dim option. Also I guess Change Colors is part of the Premium but it chases every time ii hit it.

Also not locking is a BIG issue but being a 3ed party app that can't be avoided.
Just to update. Contacted the developer and you CAN change the brightness by sliding 1 finger up/down on the open app screen. It is a little buggy and jumps up/down but does work. BAD news though: Apple has pulled the app from the app store. So unless it gets reinstated there won't be any update/bug fixes. Shame on this since Apple doesn't offer it.

Do you think they pulled it because the phone stays unlocked while running it?

To shed some light on the case i'll add a couple of details: The app seemed to stir up a lot of issues during the reviews, most of the points brought up wouldn't have been brought up if it was a different app.The latest update was meant to provide bug fixes, had and extra layer of safety to protect the OLED panel etc, the points brought up by the app review member have now been addressed again so that hopefully a new update may come out to fix all the existing issues for those who already have the app and especially for those who have paid for the premium features, albeit the review process is much slower than usual for OLEDX, it may be possible that a new update may come out.

On the iPhone X it is possible to implement a locking mechanism for the app that would work with a passcode or face id, seamlessly, however seeing all the issues brought up i doubt that would be allowed.

Also i said that i'll post battery data usage, which i didn't because of these issues were increasing, so i didn't want any extra exposure or new users to get an app where new features wouldn't be able to be added, so also all marketing was cut.

Had this app for one day and ate the battery big time. Within 22 hours the battery went from 100 percent down to 61 percent. Good try but bad for the battery

I've gotten better numbers, but that is a usage of 1-1.8% per hour, which is a similar number to what AOD uses on devices that support it, i don't have sufficient data on this, just based on claims.

For a couple of years I have been using an App called Rise (also Nightstand) on my iPad as my nightstand clock. They are dimmable but of course being on LCD it is not desirable. Just got my Seneo wireless charging stand yesterday to use OLEDX/iPhone X as my nightstand clock. Worked great (dimming is a little buggy but......) and happy with results except.......a problem I have using my iPad and forgot/didn't think about until this morning. Having an app open means no auto iCloud back up. So now I will have to remember to do an iCloud back up manually every night or morning. Another caveat that is not obvious to using a 3ed party app on all the time.

Looks like OLDEX is back in the app store with an update. However now the app won't stay 'on' and after a time out my X locks. Is this a new bug in version 1.3 or am I holding it wrong?:)

No, it's a feature.
Feature????? This is a bug in the current version. Screen locking of an app is NOT a feature and OLEDX works like any app that plays video or games and doesn't let the iPhone lock. OLEDX is (supposed to be) an "always on" app. Read here (scroll up) to understand how it works.

I suspect Apple would make the developer add this "lock" as a security feature. You have to go into settings > brightness and turn off "auto-lock" by setting it to never to avoid this. Before I believe the App would bypass that setting.
[doublepost=1514860882][/doublepost]PS: The phone will still lock if you use OLEDX with settings > display and brightness > auto-lock set to never, because in the app the proximity detector can lock the phone when you place it face down or in a pocket.

PPS: Well, mine isn't locking when I place it display down on the table, so...

May have the bug isolated. Was also having a problem that every time I put my X on my Qi stand it would switch on the 'Star Roof' background (and still screen lock). Deleted app and waited a few hours to re-install. After re-install was back to the 'free' version and used last night fine. Restored purchase today and so far it is working and I'm NOT going to click on Star Roof (think that is the problem/bug). Still a little buggy but it's only version 1.3 so hopefully the developer will continue supporting it. That is why I bought it since other than color (adjust to melatonin safe red) I don't care for any of the Premium features.

I bet Apple offers this in iOS 12 as a BIG new feature.

The one thing I was not aware of when using the OLEDX app, you cannot receive phone calls, It sends any call directly to Voice Mail, so I guess I wont use the app, sucks cause when I found it earlier last week I downloaded it and paid the $2.99 for the premium to have the colors, etc, and now its not even usable.

I'll have to check that bug out - My understanding is that phone calls are rejected only when you put the phone into guided access mode to lock the app so that people can't pick up the phone and exit the app and use the phone.

Yeah I figured that out a few days ago lol. Just hate that the phone cant lock and I have to remember to turn the always on screen setting off when I am not using the app

Always on is a Great Feature but unfortunately battery life would decrease in today’s battery world. Yes Apple could put a larger battery in but this also increases chances of battery malfunction
Apple sides with Cautious and preventive so it’s doubtful we will see this unless there’s a better battery technology in the future

The idea is that with OLED the effect on the battery would be fairly minimal.

On my note9 it is just additional 0.5% per hour battery usage for the AOD. Minimal battery impact for such a great feature.
