So I had an 12P and never set eyes in the 13P in the wild. So you might imagine my surprise when I got my 14P in the mail yesterday. This camera bump is PREPOSTEROUSLY large!

I might return over this. With case, the phone is about *half and inch thick* at its widest. And unless I pixel peep, the photos seem mostly the same.

I don’t know - really not feeling this form factor. Am I the only one?

No there are others who aren’t happy with the aesthetic/form factor. It does look a bit comical especially on the smaller Pro but I don’t think it’s a big enough issue for me personally to want to return it…in a month or two, people will forget about it/get used to it just like those that went up in size to a Pro Max and now think the Pro is too small in their hand 🤷‍♂️

Honestly, I look at the screen. Who cares? I never notice the size of the camera bump and I’ve had the 12, 13 and now 14 Pro.
Yeah I get you. It’s just feels like a new issue I didn’t have before and hard to see the benefit of what I get for it. I will hold onto it for another two weeks or so to see if the photos around the edge cases (low lighting) are improved enough to justify.

For my use case, the speed/performance is identical between this and my 12P - or at least, any improvements are imperceptible

I don’t know - you guys don’t keep it in your pocket? It’s perceptibly bulkier. In a vacuum sure not a big deal - but it’s suppose to be an *upgrade*

I get it. The pictures are better. But they don’t seem that much better.
Honestly I would say the Pro Max is the problem in a pocket not the camera bump lol

I had the 12 Pro Max and then 13 Pro Max before so the 14 Pro even with the camera bulge is significantly easier to “pocket” in my jeans and in my work suit to be honest.

Necessary compromise for an improved camera system, and I don’t even notice it — although, I’m coming from a 13PM — seeing the 14PM alongside the 12, it does look noticeably larger. But the difference is even bigger compared to my 3GS 😉

I mean the 14 Pro destroys the 12 Pro in every single way - speed, battery life, and camera quality. It’s not like the bump in the 12 Pro was small lol. I just dont get it. I feel like it’s similar when people complain about the weight of the phone. They are all so light under 250 grams for the Pro (not Max versions)

Look at my pics above. It was very small comparatively! The 14P bump is half again the width of the phone!

And yes on paper the 14P is better. And we’re all different. I don’t begrudge anyone their preference for the 14. But for me personally, the paper differences amount to a practically similar experience. Anyone else who upgraded feeling this way?

What are we talking about - maybe 0.5” of a difference? Just keep your old phone. It’s really quite simple, but I don’t think its a huge difference.

It's those small, willing to accept, changes over time that have us here now. There was a time when the complaint was over the bump of the iPhone 6. Each year, 'it's just a small difference'.

It adds up, like a frog in boiling water over time. One day the iCamera will have phone capabilities.

The camera bump coming from a 12 Pro does two things differently for me on the 14 Pro Max. 1 HUGE negative is that with the Apple Leather case, I cannot wirelessly charge my phone in my Model 3. A huge plus on the camera that is starting to feel good, is using a phone this, the bump with case actually acts as an extra grip for my finger to hold the phone one handed! That’s how freakin’ huge this thing is lol

The camera bumps have never bothered me on 11pm/12pm/13pm and now 14pm. I think the rear it’s what sets the iPhone apart from the rest. A lot of other devices out there look alike.
The iPhone 4, 4s, 5 and 5s had cameras too. :D And everybody wowed over them at the time. One day Apple will change and the camera will be flush again but still be amazing. The thing that 'sets the iPhone apart' will be gone then.

It will be interesting to see just how many customers who believe this now will be sorry to see the bump go. I reckon there won't be any.

Exactly. I think that’s why I’m so sour on this change - I can’t help feeling like I just paid $1000 to upgrade to a worse physical design that, in 2-3 more years, Apple will engineer away and I’ll be like “oooh the camera is flush now, I should upgrade!”

Like they’re saddling me with a pre-planned issue to upgrade away from later

I haven't noticed much of a practical difference in my pocket but I haven't started wearing jeans yet. Autumn is next week and it's supposed to be 100 degrees. The average is 78.

Obviously I would rather have no bump, but these cameras are just getting so good that it's worth it to me. I just wonder how far they're gonna take it? Rumors are for a periscope camera system in the next year or two, but idk how they would do that? The thing with optical zoom is you could potentially reduce the number of lenses and sensors down to one, which I'm sure Apple would love to do to save money, and it could also remove the bump entirely. But with the large for a phone sensors (1/1.28") on the wide camera that they're using now, how are they going to turn that on it's side to do a periscope without making the phone a lot thicker?

I could see this going one of two ways: A "camera" bump that goes across the entire top of the back of the phone for the sensor/lens "chamber" of sorts, or keep the wide and ultra wide and only do optical for telephoto using a smaller sensor, perhaps 3-6X telephoto or something. That would still be an improvement but wouldn't rid us of the camera bump, which I don't think they could do either way at this point? Or perhaps they just ultimately decide, through this testing period, that a periscope lens just isn't going to work well for the iPhone.
