I haven't noticed much of a practical difference in my pocket but I haven't started wearing jeans yet. Autumn is next week and it's supposed to be 100 degrees. The average is 78.

Obviously I would rather have no bump, but these cameras are just getting so good that it's worth it to me. I just wonder how far they're gonna take it? Rumors are for a periscope camera system in the next year or two, but idk how they would do that? The thing with optical zoom is you could potentially reduce the number of lenses and sensors down to one, which I'm sure Apple would love to do to save money, and it could also remove the bump entirely. But with the large for a phone sensors (1/1.28") on the wide camera that they're using now, how are they going to turn that on it's side to do a periscope without making the phone a lot thicker?

I could see this going one of two ways: A "camera" bump that goes across the entire top of the back of the phone for the sensor/lens "chamber" of sorts, or keep the wide and ultra wide and only do optical for telephoto using a smaller sensor, perhaps 3-6X telephoto or something. That would still be an improvement but wouldn't rid us of the camera bump, which I don't think they could do either way at this point? Or perhaps they just ultimately decide, through this testing period, that a periscope lens just isn't going to work well for the iPhone.
The periscope camera will work the same way the internet does: A series of tubes.

I just want it long enough to have a built in phone stand. How hard can that be? What, do I have to wait till iPhone 18?

Exactly. I think that’s why I’m so sour on this change - I can’t help feeling like I just paid $1000 to upgrade to a worse physical design that, in 2-3 more years, Apple will engineer away and I’ll be like “oooh the camera is flush now, I should upgrade!”

Like they’re saddling me with a pre-planned issue to upgrade away from later
Notch vs DI is a similar case.

DI appeals more visually and also interactively with animations, but after a couple days the fad wears off and you're left with a permanent notification black bar in the middle of everything (which you can tap for stuff). Despite being "shorter" in width, it sits lower than the notch, is this really an improvement? Software-wise could be if you put up with it being there all the time, hardware-wise not sold. On the other hand, although the notch looks really bad, it was easier to get out of your way when interacting with the phone.

Either way, it seems Apple is unable to find solutions to put out a clear edge to edge display, so they ship all these band-aid workarounds. I think both approaches are equally bad, with DI attempting to "improve" the lack of hardware innovation via software basically.

They are so big I hit down, mistaking them for warp pipes.

I noticed it immediately but on day two it’s less of a problem. I will be casing it so I’ll notice less then.

That said, couple things:

1. The new TSMC process for 15 better seriously reduce size and weight. The pro has just gotten too heavy and thick. Save this massive design for the max.

2. It is kind of astonishing Apple doesn’t bevel up a smooth edge so the camera lenses are even and not catchy. It is like the design group has waved a white flag on this.

The photos and video are amazing though and if I had to choose, I suppose I’d pick the warp pipes.

Anyone with a 14 Pro in an Apple case have any problems with wireless charging in the car?

My car has a completely flat surface for the iPhone to lay on and I’m concerned that the bump and it’s big slope/gap will pull the phone away from the charging pad and will prevent it from working.

So I had an 12P and never set eyes in the 13P in the wild. So you might imagine my surprise when I got my 14P in the mail yesterday. This camera bump is PREPOSTEROUSLY large!

I might return over this. With case, the phone is about *half and inch thick* at its widest. And unless I pixel peep, the photos seem mostly the same.

I don’t know - really not feeling this form factor. Am I the only one?
Camera bumps have always been a ghastly and terrible solution. Hated it on my 6s and ever since. There are so many better ways to handle the size of the cameras.

Even on a 13 Pro, finding a case thick enough to let the phone sit flat on a desk is all but impossible. Can’t imagine dealing with the 14 Pro. But I’m sure I’ll live with a phone that looks more like a mirrorless camera when I upgrade again in a couple years. Ugh.

I mean, seriously, it’s not hard to make a core feature of your device look like it was meant to be there design wise. I’d accept camera bumps if they were optional, like if the lens/bump assembly was removable. 9 days out of ten I don’t even use my phone camera for a quick document snap, why is my phone always ugly and unstable so it can take photos far worse than any serious camera (I carry a mirrorless camera and a few lenses with me daily, I pull that out for 90% of photos)

I never really look at the back of my phone. I have my pro max on order but was at Apple today and saw the 14 pro max. To me it’s no big deal but I can see how it might bother some people.

How big is the camera hump on, say, the latest Pixels? Those take great pictures.
Pretty freakin' thick!

I don’t think the chips would be significant in the weight of the phone. It’s due to the stainless steel material. Simply compare the Pro and the non-pro (aluminum) and there’s quite a significant weight difference. Apple really need to go with titanium next if they want to maintain the weight from ballooning up.

This is the main reason I am still stuck on my 11 Pro Max. With a silicone case on it, it has zero camera bump. The 11 Pro Max camera was a huge step up from previous models, too.

Iirc new silicon process is 30% more power efficient. So I’m expecting less battery.

I don't know what I was expecting, but when I opened that box and saw the camera bump, my first reaction was:

Of course, I'm coming from an iPhone 11 Pro Max. But yes, the 14 Pro Max camera bump is objectively titanic.

We use this and another similar car charger along w the quality knockoff Kimguard silicone Magsafe cases. It’s a great setup, when combined w weighted Magsafe chargers around home.

As an aside, the car charging surfaces don’t make sense to me.

Basically anything vehicle manufacturers have done to interoperable or provide smartphone-like features, including limitations on Bluetooth setup, just suck.

It would be better to have cheaper cars with almost attempted except some high power usb ports and a way to easily route cables around, out of sight.

Not huge to me. YMMV

Yeah I get you. It’s just feels like a new issue I didn’t have before and hard to see the benefit of what I get for it. I will hold onto it for another two weeks or so to see if the photos around the edge cases (low lighting) are improved enough to justify.

For my use case, the speed/performance is identical between this and my 12P - or at least, any improvements are imperceptible
Imperceptible to you. Others of us find the speed/performance upgrades quite apparent. Frankly I am amazed that you fail to perceive the difference.

Hopefully the camera bump disappears when you put a case on the phone. On the 13 Pro Max, the case *mostly* eliminates the camera bulge. But the 14 camera is so much bigger that even with a case I think it's gonna stick out enough to be an issue.

The gap seems to be fine. Mine won't sit flat on any of my wireless chargers because of the placement and how large the camera area is. I have to place it with the camera platter on the charger putting the phone at an angle, and it still charges.

Despite abusing iPhones fairly seriously, I stopped using cases when iPhones got uber-tough, and my chargers are working fine on the 14 Pro. Folks with 14 Pros needing to use cases should probably boy new iP14 Pro-specific cases/chargers.
