*sigh* Tomorrow my phone will be 2 weeks old. Never, ever, damaged any of my iPhones.
Went to a wake for one of my friends. In parking garage. Concrete floor. Bent down (as I had been smelling an antifreeze smell) to see if the truck was leaking and *BOOM* - my 64GB SG slides out of my pocket. Face first onto the floor.

That's likely about 2' with me being stooped down the way I was.

So, all of these you tubers doing 30' saying no damage? Heh. Sorry, I'm calling BS.

The SG frame is marked up as well. Have an appointment booked at the Apple Store for 5:30pm ET.

So, needless to say, these are very delicate indeed.

Created this thread to let everyone know just HOW delicate. :)

Edit: Yes, I have AC+

That looks more of it hitting a small pebble or rock on the floor. Was there anything there when you picked it up?

did you buy it full price with amex by any chance? some credit card companies will cover the cost of repair

Was just joking bud, I personally can't stand clear cases. Look tacky to me, but my opinion only.

Yep... not a problem at all. I didn't buy it for aesthetics though. I am perfectly fine with how it looks and don't consider it to be tacky... but not everyone will agree.

Just like not everyone will agree with me when I say that I don't understand how someone can drop $1000+ on a phone and then go cheese mode when it comes to protecting it.

It's an expensive device and should be treated as such. Running naked is something I'd never do. Way too easy to drop and damage the phone. $20 in cases over the last 3 years has saved me what? $400+ in Applecare I didn't buy?

:mad::mad::mad::mad:Grrrrr!!!! Dang thread jinxed me!! Just dropped me phone (about 2 foot drop).

Forgot I was tethered to the dang charging cable!! Phone flew up, and couldn’t catch it!! I need that dang AirPower pad!!! Wireless ftw!!

Yep, I’ve heard this many times before that “I go naked because I never dropped my phone”. But accidents do happen and that is why they call them accidents. I hope you go get a nice case and screen protector.

Yes, the reality is nobody ever drops their phone...until they do (and yes, yes, some will be special snowflakes who go through 60-80 years and never once drop their phone - that is with a big dose of luck, not just some sort of special talent). I am pretty careful with any of my tech, but $#!t happens, especially if you really use your tech day to day (my phone goes to gym, goes on runs, on hikes, on dive boats....). As I mentioned the other day....if you have kids or cats there is a high chance your phone will end up on the floor at some point.

Sorry, OP, about your X. Glad to hear you have Apple Care+ though!

Running naked. Yep, a case may have saved it (as I said....landed face first...didn't see any pebbles underneath it when I picked it up, so the lip of a case may have saved it from damage.

Sorry to hear. I am one that also goes caseless and I have been fortunate to not break my phone Over the years. But accidents do happen. But you never finished the story, was your truck leaking anti-freeze on top of breaking the iPhone? That would be a bad day.

iPhone X needs a case !! The better the case the better your protection
This iPhone is to delicate to go naked

Well, I'm back from the Apple Store (and just finished dinner). Once I did finally get a tech (they were running late), she tried to get me to just do a screen replacement (but that still counts as one of your 2 strikes and there were 3 gouges in the SG stainless band). She had a new "Genius" shadowing her, who informed her that there were no parts in the back (they hadn't come in yet). Also, I get their tech in the back was itching to get to do an X. Ah, well, another day.
$145 CDN (taxes in) later and I have my new phone.

@Relentless Power - heh - the sound of the phone smacking the concrete quickly drew my attention away. I'll confirm tomorrow morning - also going to pull the truck outside and pop the hood - see if there's any indication of antifreeze spraying around in the engine compartment.
Just had an alignment done...wondering if they nicked one of the hoses....certainly shouldn't have. Didn't really notice any smell on my way up to the Apple Store, but I may have had the window open.

@royinla14 - actually, that's a good call. I'll give Visa a call and see if they'll pay the deductible for the AC+ (saved them likely about $800 - they certainly should!) :)

@skywalkerr69 - nope, no sign of any pebbles/small stones or anything else where it landed, even though it's pretty indicative that the bulk of the impact was at that corner.

Edit: Oh, they had 3 of my model (SG 64GB). So, that likely means they had about the same level of warranty stock on hand of the others. (at the very least) - so very likely that anyone in a similar situation should be able to get a replacement on the spot.

Like my boss asking for a list of all our unplanned data outages for the year.
And while your at it I need your sick days for 2018

It broke, so what? You’ve got apple care + so it will be as good as new.
This is the lovely, devil-may-care attitude that is the cause of so many problems in the world.

Oh, you broke her heart? That's okay, someone else will clean up the mess.
What's that? You bankrupted the American economy? Don't worry. The taxpayers will bail you out!
You don't eat healthy or exercise? Well gosh, at least you've got health insurance for your chronic heart issues.

There are so many "safety nets" these days, people don't necessarily feel that they need to take responsibility for their own life, relationships or possessions. (I'm not knocking anyone in this thread, just making a general observation.) This is a major problem in society; when people wonder why the world is going to hell in a handbasket, the "someone else will take care of it" attitude is a big part of it.

Using a case spoils the feel of the phone.
Depends on the case. But who is getting so friendly with their phone that a case spoils it? My phone is a utility that allows me to get things done, and I use a case to help protect my investment.

I'm not saying you have to use a case, but I personally think the "my phone is too sexy to cover up" is a terrible argument, not to mention indicative of a potentially faulty paradigm about the important things in life.

Whether or not a drop results in cracked screen depends heavily on angle, surface condition and luck. Not just distance.

Dude get some perspective. It’s a phone. Not a person! And definitely not an investment (investments appreciate in value, your tech only depreciates).

This is true. Technology is disposable and is superseded on a consistent basis. iPhones and any smart phone for that matter, is nothing more than a commodity. Others seem to conflate when they spend a certain amount of money on an iPhone, they think it's an investment, when it's really not.

The 8 and the X are a little more fragile since both have glass front and back. I personally have my new 8 Plus in a case as it was hard to hold without one. I found it quite slippery due to the glass. I personally like a case on my phone. Everyone has their own preferences and budgets.

It's very simple, you've got case people and you've got caseless people. You can't convince one and another. I am caseless and will never use a case in day to day use. I think a case makes your phone ugly (I love the design and feel of the X, so I don't want to ruin that as it's part of the experience. And yes, a clear case still makes your phone ugly), a case makes your phone more difficult to use (swiping up and left from the bezels feel terrible when you have a case that has a ridge) and it makes your phone bigger in every dimension. Everyone talks about the design of the X, but why talk about it when you are covering up the design. That's basically how I look at cases :)

I totally understand why people buy cases and some people are just more clumsy or work in an environment where they are more prone to damage their phone. Some also just see their phone as a utility and don't care about its design or how it feels in the hand. So I get that. My wife has a case on here iPhone and trust me, she needs it! Another friend has about 4 iPhone repairs per year, even with case.

But to me putting a case on your iPhone feels like putting plastic wrap over your couch. If you buy a car (which is multiple times more expensive than your iPhone) you are not putting extra bumpers on it to protect it either. But that's just how I look at it :)

I was in aware you still had to drop cash for tax even on a free replacement. So much for free.

I feel like I wrote this haha. Caseless since iPhone 4.
The feel of the X is just amazing without anything on it best feeling iPhone to use by far.

Most people are just careless with their things and dont think I guess.
One of my friends got a MacBook Pro last year and I saw it today and its scratched all to hell I dont get it. I just baby my electronics as much as I can just like you.

You can basically look at the AC+ fees for screen or entire phone replacements as your "deductible" for this insurance policy. And, yes, no matter whether people want to call it an insurance policy a portion of it certainly is. The other portion is extended manufacturer's warranty/support.

In Canada, the screen replacement is $39, the phone replacement is $129.

I'm debating putting that Apple silicone case on it now *sigh* do enjoy the look and feel of the phone naked.

Yes, it's almost a religious argument, that topic on here. :)

That's exactly my point. It's a phone, not a person.

I own a 13-year old Honda Accord EX. I take good care of it, and therefore it takes care of me. I don't need a car that has a bunch of bells and whistles, so long as it continues to function as it should. Same with my phone. Of course they depreciate in monetary value, but every extra month I don't have to make a car payment or a phone payment is of value to me.

I prefer to practice good stewardship of my possessions. They last longer that way. Still, your attempt at clairvoyance was amusing. :p
